The thing that keeps being overlooked is that tithing is food, not money. It was originally mandated because the tribe of Levi did not inherit land like the others. Instead, they were called to the priesthood and needed to be fed by the remaining tribes who had land to till. Sometimes money was substituted as an offering, but the money was then used to buy food, not airplanes and Armani suits.

I always ask individuals who threaten folks with Malachi 3 on tithing that if God pours His curses on those who hold back their tithes, why is He blessing heathen celebs like Beyonce, Jay Z, Michael Jordan and Bill Gates? They would then say God sends His rain on the just and the unjust. I would then ask, ok then, so He is willing to richly bless immoral pro athletes and Hollywood celebs with millions but would then bring financial hardship on Christians for not following an Old Testament tithing system?
@roniverson92828 ай бұрын
If someone would actually read the whole four chapters and realize he is rebuking the priests. They were keeping the good sheep and selling them on a black market and enriching themselves. There is no tithing requirement since the temple was destroyed. It was forbidden to bring tithes to the local synagogue or sacrifice any animals. Only a Levite could do that. Interestingly John the Baptist was a Levite and commissioned Jesus by water baptism into his ministry as a public rabbi. Also there was a requirement to be 30 years old to initiate a public rabbinical ministry.

@robert, what you stated is actually the third tithe (poor man’s tithe) . The church building don’t do that. The thing these “pastors” don’t state is that tithing was a command given to the Israelites to tithe to the Levites, and it was livestock and produce, not money.

But not just for the Levite. How do you give the tithe to God? Give generously and cheerfully to the poor, instead of to the wealthy. Deuteronomy 26 13 Then thou shalt say before the Lord thy God, I have brought away the hallowed things out of mine house, and also have given them unto the Levite, and unto the stranger, to the fatherless, and to the widow, according to all thy commandments which thou hast commanded me: I have not transgressed thy commandments, neither have I forgotten them. Deuteronomy 24:20 When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow. Proverbs 22:16 ...and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want. Luke 12 Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. 13 But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: 14 And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. Leviticus 23:22 And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not make clean riddance of the corners of thy field when thou reapest, neither shalt thou gather any gleaning of thy harvest: thou shalt leave them unto the poor, and to the stranger: I am the Lord your God Proverbs 19:17 He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; I think there are enough churches in every city and town that every homeless person can be given a tiny home or a room with a shared kitchen and bathroom. Small churches can do a little and medium size churches can do much more and the large and huge churches can take care of hundreds or even thousands each. They take in millions every year. There are almost as many churches as there are homeless people. Huge mega churches can shelter hundreds.

I found myself in a very difficult situation, and friends of mine learned about it when they ask me a couple of questions. I was living in my car for about six weeks and in and out of bed and breakfasts at the same time for a total of about 4 1/2 months. My friend looked at me and said we just bought the little house across the street let me get to the key. I’m still having difficulty in my health and they have provided a home for me with heat, hot water, lights, and even food because they own a farm store. God clearly has not been listening to these other teachers because I’ve had very little to no money to give it to the last year and a half and somehow I have been completely provided for. The Lord visited him and baked him a cake on the coals and brought him water to drink and he went in the strength of that for forty days and nights. 1 Kings 19 4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers. 5 And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. 6 And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. 7 And the angel of the Lord came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee. 8 And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God. 9 And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah? 10 And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away. Isaiah 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones Jeremiah 9 23 Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: 24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord

I used to believe in tithing until a few years ago, when I came across a website arguing against it; I read the arguments and searchd the scriptures cited on the subject, and realized that the arguments against tithing as a New Testament practice are correct. The tithe in the Bible was never of income, but of food; the storehouse mentioned in Malachi 3:10 was the place where food was stored. When Jesus spoke to the Pharisees on the subject of tithing, he was not speaking to believers but to people who rejected Him; the were tithing mint, anise, and cummin, i.e., spices, not money. We recently had a short series of sermons at my church on giving, and some of us noticed that the email announcing the sermon series mentioned that the church's recent giving was way below usual levels. The sermon on tithing was one of the worst sermons I've ever heard, based on Malachi 3. Oddly, the pastor didn't mention verse 9, where the nation is said to be under a curse. If that verse is included in that passage cited in support of tithing, then it's obvious that it can't be referring to the church, because Romans 8:1 says that there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. If the prosperity preachers in this video really believe in tithing of income, why don't they tithe their own income? They would receive so much back in return that they'd never again have to preach on the subject. If we're to believe Robert Morris, Jesus saved him from drugs and immorality in order to turn him into a crook.

Every mega church could build so many apartment buildings with permanent single rooms and shared bathrooms for the poor. Or build so many tiny homes villages. Medium and smaller churches could join up and work together. But for all the church's claims of helping; year after year the homeless population remains huge. It's not going down inspite of all the offerings and donations. The proof is in the pudding. If each church housed even two homeless folks each, but we know that large churches could do so much more. 380,000 Churches 582, 462 homeless People Why won't all those churches feed and house the poor??? What if 2000 churches across America each made sure to get 300 homeless people into tiny homes or small apartment units permanently. Don't kick them out later because the chronically homeless have permanent disabilities.The homeless usually each have more than one disability. That is why they are homeless. Now that is only 2000 churches, that still leaves 378,000 more churches that can do their share.

If we give and help others, we are showing the love the Jesus taught us to do. I think that many times God will bless us. But it isn't guaranteed. Tithing is old testament. We tithed for years and we're always taken care of by God. But the scripture says that Jesus will provide for us according to His glorious riches in heaven. So our tithing wasn't needed. God was taking care of us like He promised to. Then we have in Luke 38 "Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure-pressed down, shaken together, and running over [with no space left for more]. For with the standard of measurement you use [when you do good to others], it will be measured to you in return.” so the Lord wants us to give to others and help if we can. But not tithing. Tithing is giving to the already wealthy men in the church. My goodness. There are poor, hungry struggling people everywhere. Those are the ones we are to give to according to Jesus. And I do believe that when we do that, the Lord will take care of our needs.

I'm starting to think one of the biggest problems with the American church is, there is too much money. Buildings, salaries... Imagine if that money was used for real Christian charity? Widows, orphans, help mothers, the poor... We might look like the first century church.
@nerychristian8 ай бұрын
True. The first century church met in homes. They sure didn't own large properties or have comfortable salaries for pastors. And it's always funny how in most churches, it's only the main pastor who gets paid. But everyone else has to volunteer.
@Dilley_G458 ай бұрын
50.000 $sound and light equipment and no money for a few 4×2 for a cross. Nothing wrong with a big building but a pastor shouldn't get rich from tithing. My old Church pastor in spite of having a 4 hear degree only got an average salary
@nerychristian8 ай бұрын
@@Dilley_G45 I think that only way to fix the problems in the modern church is to get rid of all salaries and tithes and offerings. That would immediately get rid of most charlatans and scammers. One thing that has always stood out to me is that even if you were misguided enough to believe Malachi 3:8-11 apply to us today, then it reads that you should give out of your "Increase". That means for the layman that it is the 'Extra' you have.If you are living hand-to-mouth, you probably don't have an increase and should hold onto your money.
@richardvoogd7058 ай бұрын
@wasntme7845exactly. Deuteronomy 14:22 touches on tithing, and talks about a tenth of what our fields produce. If we keep on reading, vv 24-25 mentions turning it into silver, i.e. money. But get this, v.26 says to buy whatever we like and eat it ourselves. Shock horror! Not put the money in the offering plate? Oh no! I've heard this explained away as referring to spiritual food, but that seems to be an unnecessary complication of the plain reading of the text.

It is a simple argument here, tithing is food and not money. Yet in current day church it is conflated with free will giving. You either tithe from your livestock or your crop yield. The only time money is involved is when, in order to pay a certain tithe, you have to sell the tithe to travel to the place of meeting and then, once there, you spend the money on whatever you want to celebrate that particular feast. In truth, the tithe went to the Levites, then among them, another tenth went to the Levitical priests. Certain tithes were also for widows, orphans, and strangers in the land. The Levites lived off of that portion because the they had no inheritance in the land. The practice of tithing in the modern church is completely and utterly unbiblical. Read Deuteronomy 14.

Most churches I have attended do NOT reveal this to the attendees. I learned from someone in the know at a large Baptist church I had attended that the senior pastor was making well into a six-figure salary plus other perks and benefits, including personal security protection. I do believe tithing/giving is important. Not for the purpose of receiving financial blessing back , though that doe happeen . The purpose is for the pastor to have an income and the church maintenance cost's. Plus of course the charities the church as a whole is involved in . My minister lives an average lifestyle, avarege home, average vacations . So our tithes do produce profit back in the real tangible of a minister that is there for the church body and not for his wallet .

Back in the 80's I understood that tithing is not for the Church. I remember sharing this with a sister of the church I was attending at that time. She began to weep as it dawned on her that she was not cursed if she didn't tithe. She was worried about "back tithes." She believed she had to pay for tithes she didn't pay earlier. There was no way she could ever get current on her tithes. Finding out the truth that we are not required to tithe was such a relief to her.
