One pet peeve I have on all tape dispensers is that they are all too light (in weight), rendering one hand operation impossible.

Probably should add a dowel to fit into a bench dog hole and then it wouldn't move... would mean you couldn't use it on a flat surface but around the shop how often are you going to move this.

I have a tape dispenser that I think is weighed down on the inside by sand. Doesn't budge at all with one hand

A really good tape dispenser needs to be heavy enough to pull the tape out without having to hold the dispenser with your other hand.

vinny142 YES! I have come to be completely turned off by CNC projects. They are fine, I guess, but it isnt really what I go to the shop to do.

If this had been a combination of CNC and regular woodworking, it would have been more entertaining. Maybe if the CNC was just used for the spindle pocket with the rest of the project done with tools we all have access to. Or one half CNC'd the other half done manually. So we could see how it could be achieved with either tool setup. Whilst the 3D printed spool part was OK, it would have been nice to see how to make it from wood. Maybe cut 3 holes in a triangle with a 40mm forstner bit then cut the spool out with a hole saw or band saw. CNC projects just seem like a long ad for the x-carve, which is something I'm never going to buy.

When you're using the file on stock spinning in the drill press, only use it on the right side. If you use the file on the left side, the file is trying to cut "with the grain," and it won't cut. (Unless you reverse the spindle.)
@maxximumb

Why not make it out of 6 layers, then you would not have to hollow out such a large area with the CNC? Make two maple spacers and thinner sides. Less wasted wood too.

Nice! I’ll try this some day without the use of a CNC machine!

I noticed that you only used a straight blade for the cutter. Would it be easier to use if you used a serrated blade? Leaving aside the issue of how to make it, of course...
@MAKE
@MAKE 6 жыл бұрын
Daryl Van Humbeck I was actually just experimenting making a serration on the other side of the bevel cut. I added the serrations using a triangle file. Works pretty well!

Nice build. I think I'd be easier to use if you weighed it. A pocket at the bottom with buck shot or something would work. Also if you honed the cutting edge it would cut straight. Great idea though.

I completely lost interest as soon as you said you were using a cnc machine. it would not be that hard to use a router and then cut it out on a scroll saw. probably could have done it faster than that x carve did too. no skill required in this except computer modeling
@shammient
@shammient 6 жыл бұрын
Definitely worth your time to get confident changing bits. No point running that pocket with an 1/8" bit. Should only take a minute to change bits and re-zero Z. Big pocket first then roller pocket then pins (which I don't think we're really necessary, like you said).

Dumb peopel complies about using CNC (wich is a tool !). For MAKE, waste of wood and time making that big pocket, you should use more layeres

Weird hearing gaffer tape called gaff tape. I think a hacksaw blade would have worked better, holder needs weight, profile for pivot too high and not long enough, not well designed for manufacture... But it looks nice...

In general, you'll get better results on CNC machines with climb milling, as much as it hurts my brain coming from a conventional machine background.

Why put so much effort into making this extra-fancy when you can't put more weight to make it one hand use? And why you didn't sharpen the blade for easy cutting?

LOL - that video is blocked because of copyleft, but I know exactly what it is. =) Didn't really take anything from me though as I'm a computer programmer. CNC is really simple to program and has it's place in mass manufacturing, but I expected to see how to make the item in the thumbnail rather than load a piece of wood in a machine and let it make it. (Hence why I said 'in wwing projects' in my original comment. =) )

Very nice finished product but I agree that relying heavily on CNC really means it is not much better than a shop bought item. BTW Why do our colonial cousins refer to the tape as "Gaff" tape? Again, nice, neat finished product, with a well presented video. Dave

What’s up Tyler! Great project. I remember the first time I worked on a film set and got to use gaffers tape. I surprised it’s not more readily available in stores. If it it was I think the price would come down. As always, well done on the filming and editing.

You should’ve used a laser cutter and made it out of acrylic layers. Unsubscribe, lol. A lot of people butthurt that this wasn’t made with handtools only. Who cares how its made, the concept is the important part. Some people aren’t comfortable using hand tools and would prefer to print or cnc cut it. Or they dont have the time but know how to make it using the methods they have.
