Isy Suttie plays a lot of comedy guitar songs in her own stand up, so I imagine the producers thought it would be good to take advantage of that. But that style of comedy doesn't really work inside the world of Peep Show, or with the character they'd made for Dobbie, so I can see why they cut it.

I’m going to concur with this, I recall that when she appeared on “would I lie to you?” She spoke about her early unsuccessful stand gigs and playing deliberately bad as part of her stage persona, so it seems that’s what she was channeling for dobbie in this scene. I think it might have worked if it was introduced as part of her character earlier, underlining how different her and mark are from each other, but as it is I say why it was cut.

I get a bit fed up of the Dobby hate. There are far worse characters and Isy was a great ambassador for the show in the later years after many had left. The writing did a number on her in series 8 which was so unnecessary and I think leads to people viewing her whole stint negatively. I'm also a bit biased as I'm a bit geeky myself and wasn't that keen on the series 9 version of April but I do think she [along with Gerard] are good additions to a lot of the back half of Peep Show after the end of the the 'Sophie and Mark' story arc.

Dobby's introduced well in s5 e2, Spin War, but after that she provides little entertainment value. Do you prefer her to PS' other female characters? In what way was Isy Suttie a great ambassador for the show? Gerard's only role is as Mark's rival for Dobby. Once that's over, he doesn't really have a purpose. Do you prefer her to PS' other female characters?

@@davidz2562 Isy would do loads of interview and push the show in these later years along with David and Robert as well as being willing to talk about behind the scenes stuff in interviews. I do prefer her to most of the other female peep show characters as [before series 8 at least] she does try to help Mark [like offering to go to Mark's party as a friend to help him avoid humiliation, getting him the history walk opportunity] rather than screwing him over [as Sophie often does] or pressure him into doing things he hates [like April does with the Cocaine scene] and her mix of geek/speaks her mind is a new element [compared to the 'dream girls' Jez usually gets like Elena and Nancy]. Series 8 turned her into Hipster Dobby [adding nonsense like her wanting to make Mark go inter-railing and not paying cafe bills] basically to justify the 'Jez loves Dobby' story-line which was unnecessary. I'm sure I've missed the odd counter example but I maintain she's a lot better character than people give her credit for. David Mitchell described Gerard as who Mark should be-a nerd who's happy with his lot rather than feeling that he's superior- which provides a funny contrast and a quite different eventual rival to the 'alpha male' Jeff.

@@jamesatkinsonja I didn't see any interviews by her in which she promoted PS. Which channels or shows were they on? Dobby insists Mark watches box sets of TV shows she knows he dislikes. Her speaking her mind isn't new for PS, as Sarah does that prominently from her introduction in s3. Mark really dislikes that, so it's bizarre that he chooses someone whom he knows does likewise. Dobby is a nightmare in s7 e5, Seasonal Beatings, in which she makes Mark invite her to his family Christmas dinner, where she says many things she knows she shouldn't, outs their relationship, then stomps out with her usual 'lemon-chewing' expression which she puts on whenever she fails to get her way. Mark & Dobby stringing out their moribund relationship isn't entertaining. Making her more prominent in s8 when she should have been long gone by then makes no sense. Would you want someone like her in your life? Someone who twice angrily tells you to f*** off in front of your family? Mark wouldn't be anywhere near as entertaining if he were more like Gerard. Jeff's not an alpha. He's an ordinary man with an ordinary life. The only way in which he differs from average is that he frequently makes wisecracks.

@@davidz2562 Mostly print interviews and podcasts. The big issue Peep Show has with the female characters is the lion's share of them are only seen as love interests. Sarah in 'the party' shows she's a good lawyer and her relationship with Mark but still has to undermine that by going after Jez at the end [and even Sophie's mum sleeps with Jez]. I kind of wish Dobby was kept as Mark's friend [I have a lot of female friends in real life] as it would be a different relationship for the show. I was actually going to say don't even bother mentioning seasonal beatings as I have very strong opinions on that episode and as far as I'm concerned Dobby did nothing wrong. Mark doesn't give her any prep or wants to invite her to the dinner [which he should have done when you 'meet the parent'] and Mark's dad is just vile to her [to say 'muzzle on your women] when someone is being a bit irritating to you but nothing too major, is rancid]-if someone talked about me like that I would have walked out and if they did it to my girlfriend/friend/famiy like that I'd walk out with them. If I was Dobby I'd never speak to Mark again for not telling his dad [who he referred to a Fuhrer previously] that was out of order. Also I did say they spoiled her in series 8 [and to a lesser extent in series 7 as the Box set stuff feels out of character] but I think that's partly due to a lack of ideas from the writers [as it's similar to Sophie in series 4 but much less interesting-episode 4 in both series have Mark contemplating an affair for example], hence why I think they should have replaced series 8+9 with one hour specials if they had that little material. The writing is lackluster, not the character and 5-6 Dobby often gets tarnished with the same brush as some of 7 and most of 8 [I can't work out what she is doing with Gregory in 9 who as Andrew said is pretty pointless but I guess they needed a boyfriend to show she's unavailable as characters can't just be friends in Peep Show universe apparently]. Exactly, hence why Mark can never be happy as David said. I have to disagree as Jeff is generally an 'man's man' [as shown in the man show] and wants to dominate, hence why he winds Mark up at any opportunity and exerts his superiority-pretty much the polar opposite of Mark [I could imagine if Jeff got the promotion not Mark him not having much trouble firing people unlike the mess Mark makes in 'Mark's Women'] and why he ends 'wedding' in series 2 by crying-Mark stood up to him [as he didn't know he was going to use the Buddist as a human shield] and he's lost Sophie to someone he considers weaker, hence why seeing him cry is quite jaring.

Mark's father's over-reaction wouldn't have happened had Dobby not invited herself, then said many things she knew she shouldn't, so it's far more her fault than his. Dobby doesn't give Mark time to prep her on his family - she invites herself at very short notice. Mark has good reasons for avoiding Dobby meeting his family. Neither Dobby nor Gregory should be in s9. Their appearance is almost pointless. You didn't say whether or not you'd want someone like Dobby in your life, making you feel very uncomfortable by saying various things she know she shouldn't, in front of various other people. Jeff acts macho & tries to dominate, but that's just bravado. He cries when Sophie leaves him & he has an ordinary job.

@geese5061 that's not the point of the character Mark is someone who tries to be taken seriously but fails miserably at every attempt which makes it funny. Dobby makes similar jokes mark does about insecurities and cringeworthy remarks but has zero depth beyond that. She just acts too self assured in her cringy nature and awkwardness making it a part of a projected personality rather than an actual unintentional defect (like in Mark's case) which makes it bad cringe. Not the type that is funny but the type of cringe that is somehow repulsive. The deleted singing scene is a prime example of this.

Yep Dobby is written as self assured and half decent person to contrast with Mark, he needs someone to balance him out to make him actually vaguely tolerable as a character. I was watching the scene just now where the fire alarm goes off at JLB which leads to the company being shut down and the mystery man you mentioned from the scene where they destroy the office can clearly be seen when they’re all filing out and Jez announces that it’s all gone Backdraft. He even shoves him out of the way. Also, I’m sure Izzy Suttie is a talented musician but I really profoundly dislike comedy songs so I’m so glad they cut her musical turn out of the episode.

Thousands of kids are saddled with the elderly names of their great-grandparents, who were about about a century earlier. If their grandparents have ageless names such as David or Sarah, it's fine. If they're named Mildred, Ethel, Harold or Herbert, it's an awful thing to make them unnecessarily endure.

I agree that some names are too common - I'm very often not the only David in the room & it's common that I hear someone call out David & in the large majority of cases it's not me they're calling. Names which have bad associations also shouldn't be used, such as Adolf & Karen. Also don't give your kid a name that goes badly with their surname. For example, if your surname is West, don't call your son Fred.

I'm so glad they didn't keep that Dobby scene in the final product partly because making her canonically better at music and playing an instrument than both Hans and Jez (I know, not a hard feat) while never mentioning this at any other time in the show would just be... Really weird. From a character-writing standpoint they can't just casually drop that on us without it being a big thing. Fair enough if its part of the actors thing and she wanted a scene doing that but in no way does it suit the character.

Now you mention it, Dobby is never shown as musically inclined any other time on the show. Maybe having her join Jez and Hans band, Mark's reaction to this and them having 'musical differences' might have been a decent storyline for series 7/8 [or maybe not!].
