Star San is just the greatest thing for brewing. A buddy of mine always said "When sanitization is in doubt, bring the Star San out".

Tip from a newbie, I go to Walmart, purchase a 5 gallon "jug" of water, intended to go into a home water dispenser. I pay for water and get a "free" 5 gallon carboy ... you're welcome! Works GREAT with a 2 port carboy cap with spots for a airlock and blowoff tube ... yeah, barch number three went INSANE and clogged up my airlock, needed a blowoff tube into a gallon jug of sanitizer to stabilize and calm it's jets! Liquid yeasts can be VERY active! I rack into i my fermenter by siphoning, with a siphoning wand sometimes it clogs but not that bad to deal with, just stay out of the sludge

Sarah, great video series! I went straight to all-grain when I started brewing but extract is a great way to begin. Your video is easy to understand and not full of brewing jargon that befuddles beginners. Well done!

The "lid off while boiling tip" was huge! I have never heard that before and trying to boil a huge volume with the lid off is counterintuitive, unless you know about the off flavors! Wow thank you so much! That helps a ton!!

What you can also do is take a small pitcher and remove some of the hot water out to rinse the extract bag to get it all out.

Love your videos. This helps alot. How hard is it to make Lager?
@FloraBrewing
@FloraBrewing 3 жыл бұрын
It's just as easy as making a lager you just HAVE to have temperature control. The beer needs to stay at 50ºF ish to taste right or be pressure fermented which you need different equipment for.
@3SecondsFromDeath
@3SecondsFromDeath 3 жыл бұрын
You can buy smaller measuring cylinders. Mine is 100ml and I only need 90 to take a gravity reading (less for SG as the hydrometer doesn't sink as far so I can get away with 70ml sometimes).

Best advice that can be given is don’t be afraid to make beers with extract. The whole “extract tastes weird” is less of a problem if you get your extract from a HBS that rotates a lot of product like Homebrew Ohio, Austin Homebrew or Northern Brewer. If your LHBS has extract that’s got a layer of dust on it, pass on it.

Why didn't you turn back the liquid in the fermentation after check the gravity ?!! Why do you lose that liquid ? you can wait for it to bobble step down and check the gravity then turn back the liquid to the fermentation jar then add yeast!
@ThePhantazmya

I don't understand why you are "losing beer" when you use a hydrometer. If everything is sanitized just pour it back in the container after you do your reading.
