I did a practice yeast save in a canning jar. I had little instruction but I added some Fermade-O and some dextrose and after checking the PH, added a bit of sodium bicarbonate. Confirmed lots of bubbling and after an hour or so put this in my refrigerator. Several days later I took it out and let it warm up. Still very active. I dumped this first experiment; I had a yeast delivery a couple days ago. There is something puzzling. Most brew yeasts are top fermenting. Yet the dead yeast at the bottom is what we save, and it too contains living yeast. Why not take a cleaner liquid sample from the top? Top fermenting mean the yeast is at the top? Also with the sample collected; would you add some sugar and water and nutrient as I did? After it calms down a bit, give it a shake, let it settle, and remove from your jar a purer sample........I am guessing here...... ...since the yeast on the bottom is mostly dead cells and the remains of the brew ingredients, it makes sense to me to try and leave this behind. I think the very top layer, after letting your sample settle and ferment a bit, would be the purest yeast sample. reaching to the bottom of the yeast/mud layer would bring up much more "mud". Just thinking about not transferring too many off tastes, by making a purer starter out of a carefully removed select sampling. I also think it would be best to get my samples from the secondary fermenter, as I will have left behind old dead yeast and hop fibers, etc. in the primary fermenter. I would think one could just use the "thief" to take a clean liquid sample from an active fermentation, and add it to a jar to let it continue. This should be a purer sample???

Nunneries and monasteries tended to be centers of culture, including herbalism. They created many alcoholic beverages with their secret recipes. Hops is a powerful phytoestrogen (alcohol has estrogenic properties also) and a mainstay of women's herbals. I think that's why some guys get so bitchy and raggy when they drink too much!

I think S23 is a great yeast choice for a Festbier! Maybe a tiny bit of munich malt would give you a richer colour and a bit of CaraPils for better foam. Hallertauer Mittelfrüher would be my hop of choice, because I love it, but that's obviously a personal thing. I recently brewed a Festbier with non-traditional hop. I used Hüll Melon and I can't wait to try it out.

I use a standard immersion chiller that came with my brewzilla, as I live in Thailand the water from the tap always around 30deg C so I always have to finish cooling the wort down in the fridge to pitching temperature which can take several hours, I guess it’s not worth me investing in anything else as I would have to put in the fridge anyway unless I introduce ice somewhere. No other alternatives for me?

Any tips on insulation for the quick disconnects? This is the one part of my system where I get moisture build-up and can’t work out how to insulate the disconnects.

I find gelatin best for clearing beer if you are not avoiding animal products.. I use bentonite clay for cider and wine with great effect. It is really easy and clears like crystal, but it will kill the head in your beer so they say (I have never actually tried). I like your heartwarming videos.. cheers!

Question: You purged only through the standard gas-in post with the short dip tube, but isn't there still air inside of the tubing from the lid to carbonation stone? For that matter, isn't there still air inside the long bev-out dip tube?

Turning over water jugs and holding them up is no picnic even for a man. But that action at 3:30... has just blown my mind. While most of the GFs just waste money on Amazon, eh?

When most people do the math on this they seriously underestimate just how powerful the phase-change of melting ice is at cooling. 32-degree ice is not equivalent to 32 degree water-not even close. Water gives up a tremendous amount of heat when it freezes, and re-absorbs that heat when it melts. It takes 80 calories of heat to melt 1 gram of ice without even raising its temperature. That same amount of heat would otherwise raise that gram of water by 80ºC or 133.33ºF. For cooling purposes, 32ºF ice is equivalent to -101ºF (or -80ºC) water.

Hey just wondering about the dog treats, hops supposed to be no good for dogs. Do you think adding them in the mash will be a problem when making the biscuits?
I'm thinking immersion chiller with a pump recirculating into a cooler mixed with water and ice from your icemaker that you save ahead of time!! will save a lot of water and cool really fast 🙂
