Hey guys, today we are getting a little bit of Red P by scraping it off of matchboxes. This method is meant mostly for demonstration purposes. I don't condone the use of Red P for any illegal purposes. Also, the Red P that we get isn't super pure. There are some other things mixed into it.
The yield from this method is super low too, so you really won't be able to mass produce Red P. It it really only useful for the small scale experiments.

He said if I couldn't produce the box within 10 days of buying they would charge me and they did. When I was in my preliminary hearing, another person was there for just trying to buy a box and got rejected. They didn't even buy it, just attempted it. I used to make my own “strike anywhere” matches. Strip the striker pad, dip match head in water and roll in the phosphorus. When it dries, the matches will strike on any slightly rough, hard surface. Stone, concrete, leather shoe soles etc. Probably not very safe if you were to carry around in your pocket though. I think they could ignite off each other.

Red phosphorus strips are easily dissolved into ethanol. My advice would be to soak the box in water, strip the thin layer of paper from the box and soak it in alcohol above 70%. Once you've dissolved it, evaporate the alcohol, and grind it. You get a uniform powder with a high degree of purity.

I find the real-deal chemistry like this fascinating. I will never do any of it, but I watch every video... What I find most surprising, is the amount of back and forth it takes to make something "pure".... Hard to believe it can be scaled up to make industrial scale enterprise of it.
@andersjjensen
@andersjjensen 3 жыл бұрын
The processes are mostly the same. With solvents you distill them off and use them again. With recrystallization you reduce the left over as much as possible and reintroduce it to the next batch, etc, etc. On commercial scale this means that "the pipeworks" are going to be more complex, but once you're up and running you only have small consumptions of chemicals and a bigger electricity bill. The ones who find the most efficient method, and operates where labor and electricity is the cheapest gets the highest profit margins....

A more efficient method of extracting the red phosphorus is to first get a beaker about half full of acetone Then with scissors, cut the striker strips off the side of the matches boxes and place them in the acetone Then get a drill with a kitchen beater attached and use that to mix the acetone and strikers After about 5 minutes of mixing, all the red phosphorus will have come off the cardboard Then all you need to do is strain off the cardboard and give it a final washing to remove any residual red phosphorus Then filter the liquid and you will be left with a decent amount of red phosphorus on a filter paper which can easily be scraped off Hope this helps

I once did an experiment reducing lithium phosphate with magnesium powder. Igniting the powder mixture produces a well-behaved reaction that produces no gasses and burns slowly and completely. Interestingly, there was a red crust on the top which I later realized was the white phosphorous produced internally converted to red via the high temperatures. I didn't really know what to expect. All I knew was that you store phosphorous in water. So, dumping the remaining product into water instantly produced popping and flaming and a smoke that smelled like garlic. I moved that somewhere away to finish and didn't mess with it any more. However, I did read later that this reaction produces "some substance", that when combined with water, produces phosphorous pentoxide. Given that P05 smells like garlic, I assume that it what happened. Once the reaction with the water is spent, you are left with a sort of gray powder which I suppose is a mixture of Li and Mg oxides among other things.

I used to do this magic trick with matchbox scrapings where you set a small pile alight, then, once it's DEFINITELY stopped burning and cooled(yes, learned this the hard way), then you rub it between your fingers and magic smoke is produced. You can even apply the phosphorus ash to your fingers, wash the burnt colour of your fingers with some water, and when it dries you can STILL get the smoke when you rub your fingers together. IDK how safe it is to do, but it's a pretty cool magic trick.

Think it's around 50% red P, and the other 50% is the glue (you can get off it with acetone) and shard glass for the friction (think you can get off it if you add some HCl and filter) Sorry if my english is not that good, isn't my native language

Oh boy, I already have problems in Canada doing chemistry without touching any A precursor (I now have to make a declaration to border security that KCl is NOT an illegal product). I expect a visit from law enforcement eventually, so I keep everything labeled and my lab notebook in order. Red P and Methylamine is a lot of problems if you get caught (even if they are by themselves legal in such quantities). I can't believe how difficult it is just to pursue such a hobby, even if I have zero interest in drugs or explosives.

Canada used to be the place where are the ex-drug chemists from down here in the states would flee to after almost being arrested by the FBI/DEA. They would either retire or continue making stuff, usually the serious scheduled compounds like LSD and MDMA. Unfortunately, that's just how things are I guess.

Yea, you can't get very far in chemistry without hitting some chemical that has been identified as a precursor. However, you may want to read how these restriction laws work. It is basically a police-state type setup. Since the government (US) couldn't really, say, ban sulfuric acid or any of the other ever growing list of "bad" chemicals due to the fact that we still haven't *quite* sunk to the level of thought crimes, what they did was bully the seller. They did this by making the seller liable for the actions of the customer, as if a sort of cohort. And the rest is a setup so that the seller can (or must depending) report any unusual purchases, etc. to big brother. Something to keep in mind regarding the difference between purchasing and possession.

But be glad this, and the South American atrocities committed in the name of the War On Drugs, was done. Just look at the benefits. A bit of reading on wikipedia will show that cocaine is far less toxic to the brain and recovery from addiction is far more likely than from meth. So now they've apparently cut way down on cocaine supply and made domestic meth production difficult. Then, the Mexican baddies realized making meth is far easier than dealing in cocaine traffic. So now our streets are flooded with an even more destructive addictive stimulant. And I'd bet my bottom dollar that if they hadn't have done anything, the coke culture would have died down anyway as the effects were clearly on display with celebrities wrecking their lives one by one. Yes, true freedom is too dangerous for you and I, nor can we be trusted, we must live and die on our knees.

Then don't even think about coming to Germany, while red P and iodine are free to buy to anyone, our government has a hard on on heavily regulating anything that MIGHT be slightly toxic, cancerogenic or can be made into explosives. This includes regularly used chemicals such as nitric acid, various lead and nickel salts, mercury, formaldehyde, methanol, DCM, chloroform, ammonia, various hydrocarbons and most recently potassium iodide which until May 1 was classified as non-hazardous but now has the H370 statement "Damages the organs" and is thus classified toxic.

+Nile Red is it possible to dissolve the cellulose of the match box in Schweizers Reagent and filter off the red phosphorus?
@xXFalkerXx
@xXFalkerXx 5 жыл бұрын
This is an interesting idea, but there is a better suggestion. A strip of paper on which is red phosphorus should be soaked not in water but in acetone. Then the bone glue dissolves and phosphorus can be easily separated from the paper by rubbing a little with a toothbrush. In this case, there will be no cellulose fibers in phosphorus. But it will be dirty phosphorus. For further purification, this phosphorus needs to be poured with concentrated hydrochloric acid and wait a while. Then rinse several times with distilled water. As a result, you get a very pure red phosphorus with a small admixture of glass dust which does not affect the course of most reactions.

Stay tuned for part two where we explore the birch reduction. Then parts 3 and 4 where we make anhydrous ammonia and methylamine. No wonder nilered "cranks" out these videos so fast. Can we see a video where we take illegal drugs and make them back into things like decongestants? Thanks to the patriot act people with allergies have to buy meth then make it into psuedofed since its very easy to buy meth but very hard to get cold medicine. That law pretty much back fired. Before the patriot act mexican drug cartels dealt with cocaine now pseudofed is too hard to get and the cartels now make a literal killing selling meth. It's like the DEA is totally on the wrong side but once these laws are passed and things get worse they keep doing them. Its like selling ISIS guns then sending over more troops to try to defeat them while selling them more guns.
