In my 1st year at uni there was a PhD candidate who worked on an experiment that required white phosphorous. Then, in the middle of that he left for an international internship for several months, leaving the phosphorous safely in a glass jar under water in his lab cupboard ... Obviously the water evaporated and the phosphorous got exposed to the air. Fortunately this happened while the best lab technician I've ever met was there. He quickly realised 1) whose cupboard it was that had started smoking and what chemical was likely stored in there, and 2) that said cupboard was on wheels. He shouted to the professor to immediately open the emergency doors and everyone else to clear a path and wheeled the cupboard outside. He then calmly walked back inside, called the front desk followed by the fire brigade. When the fire fighters arrived he told them to come enjoy the fire (it was just the cupboard burning, but quite spectacularly). Putting it out wasn't useful, just let it burn up. He had called the fire brigade just in case something would go wrong and the fire spread.

Quick thinkers like him are life savers. The worst thing you can do at a time like that is to either hesitate and then end up with a much larger problem, or to hesitate before taking the wrong action (like maybe wheeling into it a classroom full of kids who are juggling glass bottles of gasoline).

@retsaM innavoiG I did the research. Unless by research you mean reading or watching western media full of propaganda for uneducated masses. Think for a moment about what you said. "Country A already has a lot of valuable resource (easily sold for the money). So, obviously, it doesn't need more of it (money)". It may sound logical only to braindead victims of public education... Second fundamental mistake in your thought process is that 'country' decides to start the new war and get the oil. Country is an abstraction. It doesn't decides. People do. Oligarchy/corporations lobby another war, and taxpayers pay for them, while those oligarchy/corporations sell goods for the billions of dollars to the military and gain free oil.
@ImperativeGames
@ImperativeGames 4 жыл бұрын
@retsaM innavoiG Ok, I'll try one last time. This conspiracy that "American (war) machine needs oi", which is easy to debunk, was created and presented to you by manipulators. They created invalid explanation and filled information space and, consequently, all the room in your brain. The other explanations never got to you. In reality, oil, for example, from the Syrian Republic is sold to Turkey, Pakistan, India, etc. About oil sold by some US companies - yes, it would cost more. But why it should bother *other* companies, which profit from selling goods, for example, to continue war in Afghanistan, for 67 billions every year? All the military contractors are getting a lot of money. All the "rebuilding" of destroyed countries costs billions every year. Or *other* companies which got control over oil and natural gas in invaded countries?

If i'm gonna be honest, the twist feels like it's telling you to pick up the cup, and then scolding you for picking up the cup. It is undoubtedly a powerful scene, but thinking about it from what the game's message is (war bad, games based on horrific events weird motivator, that sort of thing), having no other option at that moment in time with the game hurrying you to use the mortar and then slapping you in the face for following its orders? Makes me think of an NPC telling you to get a spoon and then calling the guards because you took a spoon.

Two bricks and a sheet of glass between the cameras, a tile on top of an old wooden barrier, and an old, rusty axe-head for the ignition panel, and doing nothing but burning a dangerous, self-described "sticky fire" near arid grass. My lab partner put the filter paper in the trash can at the end of class which was the last class of the day. When I was dabbling with chemistry way back in the ‘70s, it was easy to get red phosphorus, I converted it to white phosphorus by distilling it in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide. I eventually got a pound of white phosphorus from Selby because I produced a letter from the Health Department which said I can purchase white phosphorus from a retail source. Basically Selby’s was being stricter than the Health Department. In those days you could purchase conc sulphuric or nitric acid over the counter. And also various alkali metals and alkaline earths. Biggest obstacle was they were expensive. The phosphorus and sodium wasn’t expensive.

I was listening to some memoirs of German soldiers who fought in Normandy on D-Day and some of their stories about how devastating the white phosphorus grenades were and what they described was disturbing. One soldier said that he witnessed an officer putting one of the soldiers out of his misery as it seemed he was burning alive from the inside out after seemingly inhaling a spray of the liquid. Whole bunkers of men being consumed by the pale flames, screaming for help - for their mothers. :( War is hell, but I do thank you for your service. And, if you are a Vietnam vet - welcome home.

There's an interesting medical condition called "Phosphorus jaw" where people affected by it had hideous malformed faces due to the Phosphorus vapours being absorbed into their jawbones. Effectively dissolving their jaws over 3-6 months. Creating abscesses and having the living tissue experience necrosis. I kid you not, having their jawbones rot from the inside. This was common for match stick factory personal. Until they got proper safety equipment.

I worked on making 155 shells filled with WP when I was in the Army. The rounds were used to set smoke screens. The smoke from burning Phosphorus is extremely toxic and the flames when it burns burn extremely long and hot. One thing not covered in this video is that if you get WP on you it tends to burrow to your bones and it will destroy the bones ability to make marrow. One of my coworkers got a speck on his ankle and it took two bone scrapes to get it all out. Is is also a possible carcinogen.

For 14 years , I worked in the world's largest WP factory, which made 250M pounds yearly. This shit is no joke and should be outlawed by Geneva convention. I have seen it melt steel like it was butter. I was around thousands of phos fires. The P2O5 is a white cloud, but it is not 'smoke' and would drift over the parking lot. After the vinyl roof & paint on my car was ruined during a single 8 hour shift, HR told me to never bring a nice vehicle to work again.

hether an acid can dissolve glass or not has absolutely no bearing on how it will react with organic tissue. They're two completely different types of compounds. That's like saying oxygen will eat your skin off because it causes iron to rust. It's a common line of reasoning, but fortunately it is flawed. Otherwise cola would melt your skin because it has phosphoric acid in it.

It’s tendency to spit could also have something to do with its highly strained crystal structure, the small tetrahedra that make it up are quite literally exploding apart as they react. This kind of results in the bulk material behaving a bit like a rock or crystal with a large amount of water of crystallization being flung into a fire. The water flash boils to steam and blow apart to crystal sending chunks flying. In this case it’s not water but the P4 tetrahedra having much the same effect

The good old M-34 White Phosphorous Smoke Grenade, or "Willie-Pete" as I knew it in my post-Vietnam, pre-Iraq Marine Corps career. Never forget being at Range 3, The Basic School, when, in 1978, an enlisted instructor demonstrated the grenade. He said 'don't even think about throwing this grenade because its bursting radius is 34 meters; i.e., "Effective Casualty Radius (ECA)" and not one of you can throw the 27 oz grenade 35 meters.' He taped the grenade to an engineer stake "out there a ways", connected its pin with a piece of slash-wire, then safely well out of the ECR, pulled the pin and we watched as white phosphorous was splattered in every direction. We were at a safe distance. "Wille-Pete" is no joke.
