The European Space Agency (ESA) and Novespace, subsidiary of CNES, offered a weightless experience to 8 disable kids, with the help of the association organizing the “Rêves de Gosse” (Kids’ dreams) event.
The kids came from five ESA member states - UK, France, Germany, Belgium, and Italy - and boarded the converted Airbus A310 Zero G in Bordeaux, France on 24 August as part of this “Kid’s Weightless Dreams” flight. True weightlessness is produced in the large cabin area of this aircraft during repetitive parabolic maneuvers, as in the Air Zero G flights operated by Novespace.
The children also took part in education experiments including lighting a candle, mixing liquids of different densities, playing ping-pong with bubbles of water and working a fidget spinner to demonstrate the effects of weightlessness.
Joining the children were ESA astronauts from their corresponding member states: Tim Peake (UK), Frank De Winne (Belgium), Maurizio Cheli (Italy), Thomas Reiter (Germany), Claudie Haigneré and Jean-Francois Clervoy (France) mentored the children on board and answered their questions.
Two disabled adults, former athlete and German television personality Samuel Koch, a strong advocate for disabled causes, and Philippe Carette, a very active Rêve de Gosse volunteer and pilot, also took part in the flight.
ESA director general Jan Wörner joined the Kid’s Weightless Dreams flight: “ESA is delighted to support this initiative. Educating and inspiring as diverse audience as possible, including youth, on science and spaceflight is among our priorities and extending this outreach mission to children of all capabilities is doubly rewarding.”
The flight was organized by “Rêves de Gosse”, who have been working for over 20 years to bring “extraordinary” children (affected by disability or illness) and “ordinary” children together, working on education projects related to aviation and ending in a flight on an aircraft. This year, weightlessness made the culmination of their project extra special.
Organizations in five countries selected the children: Fondation Richard in Lyon, France; The German Sports University in Cologne, Germany; We Fly! Team in Seniga, Italy; Happy Days Children Charity in Luton, UK; Fondation Saint-Luc in Bruxelles, Belgium.

Thank you making this happen for these wonderful people. My husband and I did the Zero G Flight a few years ago. It was everything and more. On our flight, there was a 70-ish aged gentleman with his granddaughter and a couple celebrating their 60 the wedding anniversary. Their joy was so much fun to see. The one thing that sticks in our mind was that every time we entered the weightless curve (15 times) every body starts laughing and giggling. Grins were a ear to ear. Saving up to do it again!

@@justadreamer3278 This was very nice 2 see. Just a quick thought here but has anyone else noticed how vastly different the hair flows on these young women in zero gravity compared 2 the female astronauts hair on the international space station? The hair of the women on the ISS is extremely stiff and super controlled almost as if they're not in space or in zero gravity but inside a studio.
