I see a million complaints in GH5 forums about the GH5S not having IBIS. Hell, in the world I live in (filmmaking) no one uses IBIS but Ronins and Steadycams or sliders and jibs. Hell, I didn't hear them complain ever with GH4 back in the days. It was THE biggest improvement compared to many other camera's that did hit the market back in the days. C4K without an overheating sensor while retaining great skincolours. And now people go full out about ....IBIS while that was not even a point of concern for thousands of GH4 shooters. If you want stabilized video, you get a steadycam or gimbal. I like the (more controlled) image of gimbals more than IBIS actually. My DJI Ronin is so much more natural when it comes to stabilized footage compared to IBIS. Sometimes it's hard to see, but the vertical movements of the GH5 and the corrections IBIS is implementing in the final video are just not that nice imo.

Great job guys. As an owner of GH5 I would have to agree that I won't be selling my GH5 but likely will add this as an A cam for video and keep the 5 for still shooting and b cam. Will likely wait until the first wave of sales goes through. The low light demonstration in this video is superb. Immediately answers my questions on whether it's noticeably better than the 5. It is. Thanks for doing the review right.

I'm a 70% stills 30% video guy. I love street photography and long exposures, and a little bit of portraits. I also like to take first person videos (eg like I'm on a rollercoaster ride). I have quite steady hands. I can generally manage like 2 second exposures on my OnePlus 3 handheld easily (and can also do 4 second exposures with some effort). I've never ventured into high ISO (oh yeah my phone sucks beyond iso 400, and I generally keep it down to 100, 99% of the time) so I'm not sure how I'll use it in these cameras. I like to take everything under my control - including white balance etc. Not really an autofocus guy either. I really like the gh line of cameras because of their beautiful menu and manual control system, features like pre set focus pulling etc and awesome lens that work well for both photo and video. The only other two cameras I'm interested are Leica SL (the money's lol) and mamiya 7 ii (hard to find and film gets expensive over time). Lens I'm thinking of buying 1. 12mm summilux. 2. Nocticron Reasons I'm considering gh5s over gh5 1. 240fps video. Gh5 can do 180fps but I've seen people tell it's better to stop at 120fps for best performance. 2. Better rolling shutter performance (would be ideal for first person videos).. But gh5 120fps and rolling shutter performance is already good as it is. And since I'm mostly contended with a phone camera I don't think gh5 low light performance would be a bummer. Reasons I'm considering gh5. 1. Larger resolution. 2. Ibis.. but I'm not sure how it'll help me with my use cases. It works different from OIS and I'm not sure of any disadvantages, I guess in addition to moving the sensor it also does some different interpolation I guess. Sure it'll be a boon for gimbal shooters though I'm not one but does it introduce any additional artefacts for long exposure shots? I know ibis is beneficial for video but does it take anything away from photo (in terms of artefact control etc). I'm mostly a handheld shooter, though taking a tripod with me wouldn't be a pain. And also it's most likely that I'd easily be able to find a rock or something to stabilize so won't be such a big bummer. Should I rather get gh5 and save some moneys!? These are some long exposure shots I took on my phone (I didn't take much street photography yet but it is also in my area of interest). I take photos with my phone rarely only when I really get the mood to do so.. www.flickr.com/photos/94577550@N08/ EDIT: just saw a commercial and I'm STUNNED by the rolling shutter performance. Swaying towards the gh5s now.

Yes... we wondered about how to show that too. We could have shown the same shots with a GH5 but where would we set the ISO? To be honest, around the camp fire, we couldn't get a usable shot from the GH5 at all. It was simply a black frame or masses of snow (noise). With hindsight, what we should have done is maybe caption the ISO used on every shot? Thanks for your comment.

Ah so the significantly more expensive one. I'm fairly new to all of this, but I've been doing quite a bit of research. I do have a Metabones for my BMPCC, but it's the Nikon mount. I was thinking about getting a Metabones in the Nikon mount for my G7 (and hopefully soon the GH5) so I could just get the SIgma lens and use on both. But it appears that it would really benefit to have the EF feature for convenience. SO MANY DECISIONS!

Hello, I shoot music videos and I have a canon 5D mark iii, I would like to upgrade but am still confused if I should go for a GH5s or Canon Mark iv, Kindly advise
@extrashot6 жыл бұрын
Hi All, It's really difficult to recommend different models because so much is down to what you want to shoot and the style of how you shoot. For instance, if you definitely need autofocus then there's nothing to compare with the Canon dual pixel system, but if you think low light capabilities are more important, then the GH5S is amazing. Which lenses have you got? I've already invested in quite a few Canon lenses so have to use an adaptor/speed booster on the GH5S which can be a pain. The list goes on.... GH5 is better with high bit rate 4K picture quality, but the Canon's are better at that full-frame small DoF look. However, I can give you my purely personal opinion based solely on video work... I'd go for the GH5S, but then I much prefer Canon camera's for stills? Sorry I'm not much help - the good news is that the content of what you shoot is much more important that what you use !!!

So I just got this, and I can't figure out why PAL s still 25fps and no way of changing it? Any advice?
@extrashot6 жыл бұрын
errr... I'm a little confused, do you mean you can't change the frame rate to anything other than 25fps or that you can't change PAL to NTSC? - In the setup menu you should have a section marked 'System Frequency', here you can swap between PAL, NTSC or CINEMA. After that, your frame choices should be under the camera 'record format' menu. Just checking... you are in MOVIE with the mode dial on the top. Obviously, other frame rates are available once you start playing with slow or quick.motion. Hope this helps... if not get back to me and I'll try to see whats wrong. Cheers, Paul
@brokenint6 жыл бұрын
Yeah sorry I wasn't clear enough. I'm on PAL, and I'm in MOVIE (mode). But All my frame rates I can choose from is either 25fps or 50fps. Also, the monitor shows everything in 25fps. This doesn't make any sense to me,
@extrashot6 жыл бұрын
Ahh okay, to get the 30P (29.97) or 60P (59.94) options you'll need to switch the system frequency to NTSC mode and for 24P you'll want CINEMA mode. For anything other than 24,25,30,50, or 60, you'll need to choose a format that supports variable frame rate and then adjust that in the Camera menu. Hope that makes sense. Cheers, Paul
@brokenint6 жыл бұрын
Hmm, any reason to why PAL isn't just 23,97 by default like on every other camera? Also, I wish I could set so that I could turn VFR on and off using one button. Just the smallest problems but still. Thank you!

In the UK PAL is usually 50i or 25P... 24fps is normally a rate preferred for cinema use rather than TV

This content that they produce is probably some of the best on youtube, people that actually will purchase or are in the industry will easily tell the difference in clickbait youtubers that dont really "get it" and actual professional opinions. Good job guys, just got a GH5 myself, and because no IBIS in GH5s i do not feel cheated, because i do love my speedbooster and nikkor lens combos, handholding a 20 year old nikkor lens feels like magic. What i would have liked to seen is quality comparisons of different high speed framerates, do the 240 fps look worse then 125 ? With GH5 i end up using 125 fps rather then 180 because of that little extra in quality. Also looking at stills comparisons on Dpreview it does not look particularily impressive the high ISO`s(still better then GH5 obviously) , so is there some really good noise reduction going on in video , and how much does the fine detail hurt as you go up in ISO ?

I'm currently renting a GX10 so that I can have Dual Pixel AF at 4K60 and to buy I'll have to wait for something else, possibly a next 4K60 with IBIS and proper 100% reliable AF from Canon or Sony.

Very curious about moire at 4k- any thoughts?
@extrashot6 жыл бұрын
We didn't notice anything worse than the GH5 at 4K. The downsampling seems very good even though the sensor resolution is lower. HD is even better than the GH5. Have you heard of issues?
@atradiesknows6 жыл бұрын
I have, but i haven't seen it discussed so much. I've heard its less than GH5 because of an AA filter. I've seen it said that in VFR and FHD, it's quite bad- but for my purposes, the only things I want out of the cam are at 4k 10bit- with the low light response and color space, its really just the moire making me hesitant about using it as a RED b cam.
@extrashot6 жыл бұрын
Ahh normal 4K and HD are fine on the GH5S... but you will get a quality drop using high VFR modes as the sensor crop and bit rate don't help with aliasing. If you don't need the low light capability then the GH5 is cleaner at VFR. (also better at 4K 10bit if you don't need the low light, although you can't turn the IBS off... which I know effects some with matching cameras). Personally, I don't use the GH5 above 1600 ISO unless desperate!
@atradiesknows6 жыл бұрын
For me it's very much about low light and handheld gimbal work- it would be a b cam for my Red Epic. I really only care what it does at 4K 10bit, thats what's germane to my work.

Great info guys. Subscribed. Any advantages to the GH5s over the AG-UX180 other than lower weight obviously? VLOG is overkill for the KZbin work I do. I've been using my UX180 for 12+ months and it can be heavy for filming at events where I can't use a tripod. This could be a great option for when I need to be lighter on my toes but lack of in-body stabilisation is bit of a turn off.
@extrashot7 жыл бұрын
The AG-UX180 is a great camera at a good price, especially when you consider the lens, XRL inputs etc.... but it is a dedicated video camera with a video 'looK to the images. I think most people find the DSLR form factor more difficult to handle or not as 'friendly' when you need to shoot quickly at fast moving events. You'd need to add the XLR module for good audio, probably a speedbooster and a fast computer if you want to edit 4:2:2 10bit at 4K. So by the time you've got a gimbal and nice lenses you might actually be spending considerably more money. However, the other side of the coin is.... the potential picture quality from the GH5s in low light is amazing... and to my eyes, very 'filmic'. Short answer... it all depends on what you need to film and the trade off between convenience and ultimate picture quality.
@EssentialRC7 жыл бұрын
Appreciate the reply. I hadn't thought of most of those. I think I've already got the best solution for my work based on that. Very rarely film in low light except when filming pyrotechnics. Thanks again - Subscribed. Cheers Dom (Essential RC)

You are recommending a speedbooster as well for use with this camera? Can you elaborate on that please.
@extrashot7 жыл бұрын
We have tried the Metabones 0.64x XL and Ultra 0.71x... both EF mount. The sensor seems a little bigger on the GH5S so the 0.71x maybe the best bet for wide lenses. Having said that... there's now a lot more choice for good cine lenses for these M43 cameras, so speedboosters are by no means essential.
@Hector_G_Funk7 жыл бұрын
To clarify, you would use the .71x because the GH5 doesn't crop the frame when shooting in 4k. Correct?

I believe all VFR modes are 8bit although anything less than 200fps looks slightly higher quality because it doesn't crop the sensor. You could get up to 60fps in 10bit just by setting the system frequency.

great informative vid. new sub here! would you recommend the gh5s over the sony a7iii&a7sii for paid production work such as social media commercials,weddings,real estate? usually shooting on the ronin m. thanks guys
@extrashot6 жыл бұрын
Hi Casey, thanks for the sub. That’s a tough question and we recon there will be an A7Siii for you to compare soon too! Just comparing the A7iii with the GH5S very much depends on what you’re shooting… they are both excellent camera’s on a Ronin. The GH5S will internally record 10bit at up to 400Mb/s, which is great if you need to grade from log profiles, it also looks cleaner at usable movie ISO’s to my eyes - useful if you need a really low light camera. However, the A7iii has that lovely full frame look, with better auto-focus and 5 axis image stabilisation. Usable AF and IS can really help when you do a lot of Ronin shooting. I don’t think I’m helping you much!… maybe another consideration would be what lenses you presently own or what other camera’s you need to match with? Oh, and cost too....
@maxmedia46616 жыл бұрын
extrashot thank you so much for your input! You're a huge help! I know everyone has their opinions and I've watched hours of videos on both. I'm doing more paid video work so that's where my focus is when it comes to me upgrading from my canon 80d. I don't have much invested in glass however I like the idea of switching to sony and using mainly native lenses. Low light, 120fps, cinematic look,good af and most likely full frame would be a few of the top must haves. My thinking is I could go with the a7iii for now and when the a7siii comes I could upgrade and keep the don't lenses. I'm going to be shooting promo commercials for businesses so I really want that cinematic look so if you have any other suggestions I'm all ears!! Thank you so much 🙏🙏🎥📷

I'm also looking into getting the atomos ninja or one of their products for external recording if that plays in a role in the cameras I should look at?:)
@extrashot6 жыл бұрын
I really like what Sony have done with the E-Mount... it's a very flexible system and goes all the way up to the Venice too! If I was investing in lenses now, I think the E-Mount would be a very serious factor to consider. Also, the full frame look is always going to give you more choices with cinematic styles... however, I'm not criticising the Panasonic's... I think the 4:2:2 10bit pictures have nicer colour out of the box. But then, reading your reply below... an external recorder can wipe out those advantages with better codecs and I would suggest a 7" monitor with LUT's which definitely helps give you and your clients more confidence in what you're recording. (especially at 4K when you have to focus !!! ) Some of the Atamos recorders with HDR/HLG/LUTs etc are amazing... and if you need more money for lenses, take a look at the Blackmagic 7" Video Assists too?
@maxmedia46616 жыл бұрын

@extrashot5 жыл бұрын
@@kennyboston8556 Well for low light on the GH5S... the obvious place to start is the fastest quality primes you can find. They don't have to cost a fortune... I've been getting great results from the Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 Asph, and obviously any fast Canon primes will work even faster with a Metabones Speedbooster? If you're looking for something wider, or need a zoom, then the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO is brilliant, but quite pricey. The main problem with lens advice is it's just such a personal decision... that should really be dictated by the style you want to achieve, rather than listening to a random bloke off the internet - like me! extrashot can you explain a little bit more what do you mean by sensor bouncing? Im sill deciding between these two, and missing IBIS is worry me a bit, as I gonna use it for travel I try to keep it light no gimbal. So if these bigger pixels are better at collecting light why are the gh5s photos more noisier then the gh5?
@extrashot7 жыл бұрын
GH5S photos are lower resolution, not noisier... if anything they look cleaner in low light!
Doing a bit more research it looks like the RAW photo performance is very similar. Its just the 20mp Gh5 JPEGs have a more aggressive noise reduction profile.. They do this because they have more megapixels to play with. I think theres a bit of mis understanding out there to why low MP sensor cameras produce cleaner low light video.. Its not because more light is being collected, it because there is less circuit noise being generated becuase of the fewer mp which only really happens when capturing video

@13:25 WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTT????????????? That is PURE MADNESS!! The camera going to sleep & loses TC?? OMG, that is truly shocking news. Surely the GH5S should be jammed to the input? Please please tell me it only loses sync when it is relying upon its own internal TC! As that would be sad, but not at all a deal breaker. But if can't stay jammed to a box attached to it, then you have to seriously question why Panasonic even bothered? As that is the most stupid ever flaw of the GH5S.
@extrashot7 жыл бұрын
I agree... it's a major disappointment the way things are at the moment. The GH5S isn't constantly jammed to the input... it jams when the menu option is pressed and then runs on it's internal clock until you jam it again. And yes, the internal clock loses 9 frames each time the camera sleeps or is turned off. I'm used to cameras that will stay perfectly sync'd to timecode for as long at you leave the BNC connected... so this is very frustrating. If you're running a multi camera shoot on mains it could be useful... or if you remember to jam to the audio mixer every time before hitting record. I was hoping that this T/C function wasn't quite right because we were using a pre-release version of the firmware... and I haven't heard any other reviewers pick up on it yet?
@SoundSpeeding7 жыл бұрын
Wait... what?? No way, it can't be constantly jammed to the input??? I hope this isn't true in the shipping product. Otherwise I have to ask what were the Panasonic designers smoking at the time?! ...upset about what? I don’t see why some didn’t want the GH5s to come out before April.
@extrashot7 жыл бұрын
I think some GH5 owners were upset at first about a new model coming out so soon after they'd purchased... that was before they realised it wasn't necessarily an upgrade... more of an alternative. What's the April thing? I think it's on sale next month.
@bigdap1007 жыл бұрын
extrashot idk, I assumed that if they didn’t want Panasonic to release the GH5s in Feb, they would be fine with the release at NAB 2018 in April.
@cinemenico7 жыл бұрын
Before the GH5 was even announced in my mind I already wanted Panasonic to split up the flagship model into multiple flagship. There's just a lot of stills photographers that perhaps would buy the GH5 over the GX8 for some of its ergonomics and features. Maybe they're stills shooters that shoot the occassional video as well. But they'd be spending all that premium on features they're 99% of the time have no use for (that goes a little beyond the optional V-Log L). So I was like: they should bring a GH5 that's mainly stills focused and then bring a VC5 in VariCam tradition (of course ultimately it turns out they launched the hybrid GH5, the stills G9 and now the cinema style shooting GH5S; which kinda puts the GH5 in an ackward spot perhaps, because I think people would lean more towards the ends of the spectrum than the middleground). To be honest, back in the day you would get either 5DmkII, T2i/550D, GH2 or BMPCC because it was a somewhat affordable way to shoot like an industry professional. You might hack your camera for better quality, use nice lenses, get yourself a nice tripod and fluidhead or shoulder rig (or in the really early days people do a lot of DIY with PVC piping even). I absolutely adore the GH-range, but purely on a sensor level, they've never really been that great. Especially the highlight clipping: just terrible highlight roll-off and dynamic range and not so great lowlight high ISO noise performance left much to wish for. Thing is, the bigger sensor cameras from other manufactuers or their philosophies are flawed in their own ways, although they have that sensor level potential advantage. To me both GH5 and E-M1 Mark II are prime example of how you make a mirrorless camera. They just can't really keep up with 'em in terms of sensor performance. But I feel like this GH5S is a pretty huge effin' deal! I loved the BMPCC, but it was highly impractical. Yet the footage was gorgeous and filmic, even though it was a small sensor, the files were thick and gradable, hence it was a 'cinema camera' (and also meant they could prioritise video performance and disregard stills), albeit a 'pocket' one. Since then they did have the 'micro' cinema camera, but honestly, it needed frankenrigging (although the BMPCC itself wasn't very great either with super limited battery life, bad screen and audio, etc)... it wasn't an all-in-one contained cinema device anymore. Feel like, despite of the lack of any uncompressed recording possibilities, that this might be the next best thing again! Yet, it's so much more practical and unlike most cinema cameras, it's even good at higher ISOs now. I've never thought I'd see this kind of performance in a 4/3" system camera to be honest... atleast not at this stage (I know the developments and rumors of organic sensors with heaps of dynamic range, great lowlight sensitivity, superb color and global shutter, but this seemed far away into the future still). I was sorta thinking about going Fujifilm X-H1, or whatever is rumored after the X-T2, because of the sensor advantage (I wouldn't like a FF ecosystem, and I also don't like Sony's A6x00 series because they prioritise a small camera body, causing numerous problems and completely disregarding a compact lens line-up native to that sensor size). Better dynamic range, richer colors, improved high ISO performance. If that's the improvement I'm getting with the GH5S... then I'll happily stick to the system. That's as well a point. I'm heavily invested in the MFT system. But if you've been shooting over the years with a GH2, GH4 and now GH5... were would you go to take it up a notch? Panasonic VariCam? Canon Cinema EOS? Sony FS? Blackmagic URSA Mini? Kinefinity Terra? Maybe an old 2nd hand RED? Well... that's not exactly cheap. And you'll be getting a new lens mount and all your compact MFT lenses are rendered useless (unless you decide to go with the JVC GY-LS300, which isn't exactly ahead in these areas either). But then you would have a very basic camera, you'll probably add an EVF, rig of some sort, storage, V-mount batteries etc. In the end you're closer to 10k to make the switch. So I'm really excited to have a sort of cinema camera that keeps you in the MFT ecosystem and doesn't set you back to much financially. I'm a bit sorry to see the 5-axis in-body stabilizer go, but again, back in the day we loved these cameras because you could shoot with it like an industry professional. And these folks still aren't relying on sensor stabilization, btw, they also aren't relying on very smooth continous autofocus. So... with something like this you're setting yourself up to shoot like a pro. Because you're not relying on IBIS and C-AF you're going to do great whenever you go up a league and decide to rent a RED or ARRI to shoot projects with. So... ultimately I feel like this sorta takes the ideology of the BMPCC and puts it in a GH5 body. I think it's great. It's a camera for cinematographers. That would feel like shooting with this like you would with any other cinema camera in more of a production environment. This is not meant to be a vlogger's cam, so I can see why Casey decided to drop Panasonic and go for the 6DmkII. You get that smooth benchmark C-AF of Canon's DualPixel AF. FF look is good for bokehwhoring. 1080p only, but for KZbin vloggers it means it's light to transfer into the computer, edit, export and upload, so your content is up on your channel quicker. Colors are fine out of the box, you don't have to worry or mess around with it too much, you might drop a curve, add some sharpness and you're done. A camera like that is just a different tool. But I'm not about that. So I'm looking forward to the GH5S! Me personally, I'd rather have both stills focused G9 for the occasional video & a dedicated cinema style camera, the GH5S than the a bit of both worlds GH5. Again, makes the GH5 sit kind of ackwardly in the market. But there's still some use for it of course. Especially for those who do want more pro video features, but are using a lot of primes for example and need to rely on that 5-axis body image stabilizer. Neways. Great video guys! And what a camera. Are these exciting times to shoot or what?! 😄

Wow.... you take the prize for the most detailed comment we've ever had. Thank you... good issues too !!! You've got a point about the position of the GH5... but then I was serious about wanting both. If you think about it, you could buy both bodies, and couple of lenses, spare batteries, XLR module, cheap Chinese cage, all for less than an EVA1 body, (and still have change for the bus fair home). In many ways this 'S' also puts the EVA1 in a strange position. Yes it's got that larger S35 sensor, but if I want that look... then a Speedbooster on a GH5S is a pretty amazing combination too, (especially at night)! I wouldn't get too hung up on what the professionals use (unless it's for cinema release) the difference in picture quality is getting really small now. Thanks again for the thoughts.
@cinemenico7 жыл бұрын
Haha, I get that a lot. I'm a bit of a rambler like that. Yeah, I guess the GH5 is for some, but personally, I'd just take the G9 then and have a more capable dedicated stills camera at that, with e.g. that gorgeous and impressive EVF and even improved 6.5 stops of image stabilization. I'd still get the main chunk for actual video production out of the GH5S then. And it's looking good. Indeed, I was always sorta looking around for that 'up' from the GH-range... but where do you really end up? In a completely different ecosystem with far more serious pricing. This to me is way more like it. Really impressed (although I have seen quite a few people rather disappointed). 2019 I'll be able to go parttime on my 'normal' job and do some videography on the side. Would love it to be with this one as well for the reason that my first interchangeable lens camera was the GH2 back in the day of the Zacuto shootout and Philip Bloom's Christmas special and have become heavily invested ever since. At any rate... the future is looking bright! Pun intended! :D Have a gd one guys! Cheers.

It's not 3.5 stops better. Panasonic say 1.5 and most reviewers says 1.5-2. In real world shooting I think 3200 on the GH5 looks like 12800 on the GH5s by which time the shadows are noticeably dancing. Also 240fps looks pretty awful. You can see all kinds of artifacts and jagged lines instead of straight. I doubt most people will shoot this camera above ISO 16K. Looking forward to lots of footage from filmmakers going to forward.
@extrashot7 жыл бұрын
We can only report what we observed. To my eyes, 3200 on my GH5 had similar dancing shadows to 20000 on the GH5S. We tested both cameras with the 'Standard' picture profile... I notice many reviewers made the initial mistake of comparing V-Log, so maybe there's something going on with noise reduction internally? Not sure log curves are the best way to test noise levels in the blacks. (There's a couple of reviewers who gave their opinion on the performance without even seeing a camera !!!) Either way, I keep thinking we need to do some more real world tests. Thanks for you comments. Paul
@trevorpinnocky7 жыл бұрын
typically log is a gamma intended for maximum dynamic range and high contrast (ie daytime), favoring the midtones and highlights at the expense of the shadows. Of the available bits the least go to shadow detail. So vlog at night isn't the best option for night time comparison, especially as most night scenes are 6 to 7 stops max. *However* since the GH5 is 10bit it has more data than say an a7s ii, so a vlog-l to vlog-l comparison to me, is accpetable as shadows do have a 'reasonable' amount of data. If this camera were 3.5 stops better than the GH5 Panasonic would say so without hesitation. It's very likely 2 stops max or 1.5 conservatively as Panasonic reps have stated.
