Part 1 is here: • Extreme Budget Engine ...
Part 3 is here: • Extreme Budget Engine ...
This part (Part 2) covers camshaft removal and inspection, dissassembly of the bottom end of the engine -removal and inspection of pistons and crankshaft.
You'll soon learn the term "budget engine rebuild" is an oxymoron!

However, instead I'll only return in future if unable to find the info elsewhere. @Schrodingers Box cut out the sarcasm and condescending comments, you lose more than just the "haynes manual jockies" that you're targeting with that language. You shouldn't let the Haines manual jockeys affect you so much. You bring them up over 10 times in this video and it only serves to let them know that they are getting to you. Additionally, as a viewer who is purely interested in what you have to say about the engines, it is distracting when you go off about them again as I am trying to concentrate on your wise words.

Watching your video reminds me of the time I changed the camshaft on my '72 Pontiac Lemans. It was built in Canada and had, factory installed, a Chevrolet 350 engine. All went well until it was time to set the camshaft timing. Recognizing that it was a Chevrolet engine, I went to my manual and set the timing according to what it said about that particular engine. Well, it would not start. After several hours of sheer frustration...thinking I had really screwed things up, I looked in the manual to see how to set the timing on a Pontiac 350 engine. After resetting the timing the car fired right up and ran like a dream!

I saw your video and came wanting to learn more(I LOVE LEARNING like seriously). I will say that you are right about there being an absolute fuck ton of trolls and assholes on the internet. No one likes them; however, being someone completely new to this sort of thing it is a MASSIVE turnoff to have so much negativity. I usually don't go to the KZbin comments section BECAUSE of all the negativity. I just found this series and it is really interesting. I took auto-shop back when it was acceptable and beneficial to do so (way pre 1967) and I did do a rebuild assignment. However, in my teen years I was way disorganized and impatient. Nowadays I can appreciate the focus and attention to detail so I can follow your rationales and explanations of the actual work you do. One thing, although I've been a You Tube fan for years I have never done a video. For one thing I really don't like to hear myself talk too much (probably lack self-confidence) even, when like you, I have something to say. I never realized how critical people are about videos and I am sorry it distracts you from feeling you're addressing only people like me that learn from your efforts. Anyway, I see now that posting also requires a tolerance for rejection. By the way, I like your channel's name as I watch Leonardo Susskind all the time over at stanford. I also like that grad student-girl type who draws on a white board to make videos *can't recall her name/looking glass channel*. Thanks again for all your explanations in this series! Its best to hot tank an old crusty motor . One thing I learned about engine rebuilds,if you are going to go through the effort of pulling it down, plan on replacing reserface everything. I once found I had a bent crankshaft,wouldnt have even noticed if I hadnt done an end play indicator. Thats the kind of thing you look for on a high milage car. It was a 1974 AMC .

@ 11:20 - What if you checked the pump clearances and found them to be well within spec? Then, the money saved from the budget on not having to purchase an oil pump could be applied to the cost of a new camshaft. Matt, you seem to contradict yourself relative to all your comments about non-thinking AutoZone parts swappers.
@andrewthompsonuk1
@andrewthompsonuk1 10 жыл бұрын
Fantastic series. This is the best information I have ever seen. To me everything makes total sense. The only thing I question is that cam shaft notch. I would think that unless the journal is cracking up then it should still run OK with modern oil if you smooth out the sharp edges.
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 10 жыл бұрын
Yes I see your point, and thanks for the kind comments. So the thing with the chip in the camshaft is if not repaired, it will eat up the new bearing which will cause the metal particles to cycle through the oil and contaminate all the new bearings rather quickly- I am sure you know this and thus your valid question "why not smooth out the sharp edges of the chipped camshaft"? Well, the reason is we are looking at putting about $1200 in parts and machine work in this engine- do I want to rely on just smoothing out the edges to fix the camshaft? What if the camshaft continues to chip and gouges the bearing and now for just an additional $300 I could have prevented this catastrophic failure? There are always risks and tough decisions with a budget rebuild. Without a budget it's certainly much more expensive but you don't deal with such risks- anything questionable would get replaced. I just felt there was too much risk reinstalling a chipped camshaft.
@andrewthompsonuk1
@andrewthompsonuk1 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your answer I see that given that those cams do not cost too much. Following on from my other question I suppect those old engines do not filter 100% of the oil so it would not take much metal to destroy the new parts.

I have a 92 Silverado with a seized engine. I have an extra 350 engine I took out of a truck with a rusted up body that I ended up scrapping. When I removed the engine it ran fine it just smoked a little on startup which I figured was caused by valve seals. I stored the engine behind my shop on a pallet and plugged up all the holes and wrapped it up with a tarp. It sat for about 6 years. Well now I want to throw it in the 92 that I have with the seized engine. I unwrapped it and brought it in the shop and the inside of the engine is not rusted or anything but it took a lot to get it to turn over. It took a lot of penetrating oil and a big breaker bar to get it to cycle and when it did it was rough until I turned it over a few times while pouring oil in the plug holes. Would you think its worth the gamble to throw it in my truck or do you think it needs to be rebuilt? And if so do you think I can get away without having machine work done as long as the crank or cylinder walls are not scored? Like I said it ran fine when I pulled it out. Thanks for any help, love your videos..

Those scuffs on the piston skirt aren't a major issue, if you don't want to splurge on new pistons you can just rub them out with a knife sharpening stone. And if you are worried about noise (from piston slap) or friction you can use teflon frying pan repair spray on the skirts after honing them back with the stone. Don't laugh, it's a proven technique in circle track and 2 stroke racing engines.

Pretty good vid lots of good basics here.......one thing, about the camshaft...when you pull the lifters, check the foot of the lifter, if the surface is concave in any way, (lost the crown)...then chances are the cam and lifters will not last long, if you re-use them. The whole job is then a waste of time.

Matt. really terrific video series. Had a question you might weigh in on. My neighbor asked me to look at his 96 camry after it overheated(and then sat for a year). I started it up and heard rod knock, unmistakable. So I started taking it apart and noticed the water inlet/outlet cross-over hose had been chewed up by a mouse. Is that why it overheated I thought. Kind of a smoking gun at first. So I put new bearings in and replaced the head gasket.(almost no compression in the rod knock cylinder). After I saw the mouse chewed hose I didn't think about why it overheated until I watched a video of yours about cylinder heads; paraphrasing but "you;ll do it again unless you find out why" was hammered home by you. I wish my neighbor could remember the order of events but he is old and baked. it was low on coolant and driven too hot for loo long and sprung a small head gasket leak by warping the head. It leaked directly into the cylinder that eventually started knocking, (all the other journals / rods were in spec) and that caused the knock. The knock was the only thing that alerted him...or stopped him I should say from continued driving Im trying to piece it together and figured you could guide well. Is rod knock a common result when coolant is introduced into its cylinder, (coolant was leaking right on top of this rod) Also I believe the coolant hose may have been leaking and that the mouse started chewing at the tear while it sat in the driveway and ate all the evidence. Besides driving it while its hot is there something else that shoots out head gaskets, (by way of a warped head)? it has 277,000 miles but pristine cams and no sludge really. btw... I block sanded the head, installed a home made o-ring on the oil pump, re-used all bolts, made all gaskets from rtv sealant, replaced almost nothing and tested everything...I am pinning all of it on the mouse if is grenades
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 10 жыл бұрын
There are two explanations for a knocking noise with coolant leaking into a cylinder. One is that if the volume of coolant is significant enough, the cylinder cannot compress it and the piston "hydrolocks" which will cause a noise similar to what happens in predetonation. This condition will stop when you fix the head gasket, intake gasket, or whatever is the source of the coolant leak into the cylinder. The other reason for a knock is the coolant is diluting the oil causing worn bearings and actually causing "rod knock" which is going to equate to an engine rebuild. Search my channel for "rod knock" for videos related to diagnosis of this condition.

When I have the car between myself and the camera it causes interference and also some electrical equipment I use sometimes causes interference too.

I've been fortunate enough in most cases to find clearances and specs online. Sometimes though a rental haynes or chiltons comes in handy. I see what you're getting at with the "haynes jockey" comments though. Just because it tells you one way doesn't mean that there aren't other ways to do things. I'm guessing they winced and got butt hurt every time you said it. My only suggestions would be maybe to simulate wiping the tears away from the camera with a shop towel when you say it. Oh, and its also an individual preference but I love plastigage.

If you need a new engine or need to rebuild one you might as well buy a Jasper motor that comes with a 3 warrenty. They are computer calibrated and the insides are all bran new . The machine shop doesn't always do good work with those engine blocks . I just find some machine shops very questionable

Great video as usual.. though I'm pretty sure outer (double sealed, looks like?) radial bearing races are harder than neurosurgery. What's at risk is the bearing sleeve surfaces which are actually mating against the bearing (it would have been selected to be rated at a lower Rockwell hardness). Whoever engineered -(Not a mechanic, automotive engineer, not a Haynes manual jockey, but an engineer with a bit of experience in metallurgy) On that journal that's busted, a good shop will have some chemical-vapor-deposit tooling (tradename "Eutalloy"). Basically a heat/spray-gun with a variety of powdered metals (and probably resins/binding polymers) based on your use case. E.g. A nice piece of 30' 6" Aqualoy eight month old marine-shafting is perfect except for some guy who whaled on a nut, stripped the shaft threads. Instead of replacing the nearly-mint part, my machinist built up a solid spray chucked the shaft in the lathe to cut new threads and bang-bang. Three hours of labor. Downtime was less than a day

Does the exhaust system have enough negative pressure that would allow oxygen to flow into the system? I always thought an exhaust leak would allow exhaust to escape into the atmosphere rather than the other way around. I always enjoyed the transmission section of the Haynes manual, but the pages never had grease smudges on them like some of the other chapters.
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah an exhaust system definitely has positive pressure as easily confirmed by a exhaust backpressure gauge. tests I have done to look for the fabled O2 sensor lean condition from an exhaust leak indicate you need a doozy of a leak to get a decent amount of Atmospheric O2 in the system.

So the fingernail test... is it that you can feel a grain across the bearing surface or is it a distinct groove or ridge worn into the bearing? I suspect that the my cam bearings are worn badly in my engine. Is there a given clearance between the cam and it's bearings that would distinguish excessive wear??? I have a misfire which my mechanic could not find the cause after running several tests. He suggested it could be a worn out exhaust lob on the cam for cylinders 2 and 4 on the cam but I have a roller cam and I see little to no wear what so ever through the holes in the top of the block so I'm wondering badly worn cam bearings?...but, I also don't have the cam out of the block yet so we'll see...

david reed My advice, David- do what I did. Practice on an engine that will not be your daily driver. I started by buying a junk car for just $200. Take it apart and rebuild the engine (using a rebuild video like mine or a service manual or whatever) just using the same parts- even the gaskets. This will familiarize yourself with the procedure, tools needed, etc. But the main thing I see from people wanting to get into this hobby is they just never got off their ass and do it. They watch, read, study, post in forums, etc but they never actually get started and ever turn a wrench. So get a junk engine, and just do it for god's sake. It's exactly 100% how I started about 8 years ago and I haven't stopped since.

Howdy..has that engine been rebuilt with a bore and oversized pistons before..I ask because you didnt use much effort to tap the piston out if it had a std bore with 50yrs of ridge.. if the piece of cam that broke off the bearing journal hadnt shaved the cam bring during all the miles its gone since it broke .wouldnt just a little deburing of the sharp edge allow it to go another decade or so..the journal being a bit narrower for such a small area wouldnt matter and save another $100 on the build.. good video sir .. my Chilton manuels start at 1953 to date..

@adamm1284

Schrodingers Box scotchbright because it makes me feel better. The journals aren't trashed to began with and with the cost of bearings and labor to be around $200 for a repair that will get you by. Early career small town mechanic bs. People didnt have the cash, I just use plastigauge and if it's even close I'll run it. Catching it early is always best. I've found small blocks, toyotas, and hondas are almost impossible to kill. I've gone as far as just replacing one piston from a junk motor and "match" it to the accepting cylinder using a hone and a drill. That guy got away with robbery because he is still driving it today. Making shit work is probably my favorite part about being a mechanic. Funny name btw, I'm not sure a lot of people get that, I didn't notice it until the little cat face was on my screen lol
@SchrodingersBox
@SchrodingersBox 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah i even had a truck that I used different pistons from different trucks in different salvage yards- but that is a lot different that bearings on a journal with even a little rod knock damage. Not to mention the lowered oil pressure. But if that’s all you had to work with it’s better than nothing.

Schrodingers Box most of the time it was people not replacing their timing chains and the plastic guides break then the oil pump picks up the plastic and clogs the pickup making the motor knock then suddenly it's making enough noise to bring it the shop.

Why not do a video on why you don't like Haynes instead of getting mad at viewers? Most of us are not professionals and would have no chance without a manual. I don't know why that is a bad thing, seems better than just winging it. Searched through your content and nothing came up for Haynes.

@@SchrodingersBox could you maybe explain the point you are trying to make? You know most people who need to follow the manual dont have much experiance, why the hate? I just dont understand why you would be so focused on putting people down who are obviously as interested in it as you. It's not like using a manual immediately makes you into a dingus. I get the point that you should be understanding the purpose of what you are doing and not just pulling stuff off, but the manual doesnt prevent you from understanding what you are doing. The people that just pull stuff off willy nilly would be doing that with or without the manual. The people that understand what they are doing do it that way with or without the manual. And why the passive aggressive response? Maybe it wasn't supposed to be that way, but it was so low effort that's how it came off. Literally just asking a question.

@@hdjjfhdjif878 The point is, the internet is filled with thousands - nay, millions of people who give advice on automotive but never turned a wrench- they just use the flow charts from service manuals and spit out advice that they have no knowledge of first hand. MOST people on the internet do nothing more than blow hot air and it feeds the whole parts-changing mentality. The aggression is against the "armchair mechanics" dishing out advice on the internet- not against the manuals themselves or people who actually use them in practical application. Go to any forum or look at most videos on fixing a check engine light. The idiocy is absolutely epidemic.

What brand of engine is the easiest to rebuild? I am curious because I am considering rebuilding 1 of the three vehicles I own, a 2000 mercury cougar, a 2001 civic, and a 1999 tahoe. All three vehicles have completely shot engines that have issues and would require a rebuild or replacement to continue driving. I have a question for you: on an engine that has no knock, good compression, no oil consumption, that goes well in other words, but the only thing it has is 100 000 miles on it. Could you just swap rod and crank bearings and piston rings to keep it going well for another 100 000 miles without rebuild? Considering I would like to put in a better cam (new cam bearings) and redo the valve train (lifters and roller rockers). Of course the oil pump was in the cars for a new one. I know you'll tell me if it ain't broke don't fix it, but i figure it would be more complex and expensive if I waited for it to break down. Engine runs well, just want to wake it up some. Engine is a 350 LT1 from 1995. Your thoughts....

hasbeengood Sorry- misread your first part- that there is no knock. If there is no knock and good oil pressure I have no idea why you would want to replace the bearings but if you did, you may be able to drop the pan and insert rod bearrings but the mains requires removal of the engine since the crank must be removed. I really don't recommend you do whatever you think you want to do though.

My goal was to refresh the engine rotating ass'y so I could hot rod it a little and give it a chance to cope with the extra "ooompf" of the go fast goodies. So with 100K miles and fine working base end, you would have no problem with putting a hotter cam, roller rockers, valve springs, headers and ECU tune affecting reliability. Provided the car is driven in a grown up way?
