Thank you for sharing humbly about the "failed" bread; you could have cut it but instead you walked us through your thought process in making something else and not wasting it. I learn as much if not more from failures and I love that you are vulnerable with us. I really appreciate your ministry to us, Robin!

I remember my dad would fry bacon for breakfast and then fry eggs in the bacon grease. It gave the eggs such a great flavor. Mom always had a jar of saved bacon grease just in case we didn't have bacon on a given morning. Great memory.

Just sharing my latest frugal grocery "hack". I am meal planning and putting half of whatever I make in the freezer and once a month we have a leftovers week where I don't cook! This brings our grocery budget down on the no cook leftover week to about half of what we usually spend! Thank you Robin for your wonderful videos! God bless you!

Robin, your use of a pomegranate reminds me of my childhood. When I was in grade school (60 years ago!), we were able to leave the premises at lunch time. There was a produce store about a block away from school, where I could walk and purchase a pomegranate for five or ten cents, and slurp the delicious juice on my way back to school. That was such a treat. Hard to believe (well, not really) that they cost three dollars now! ~ Have a great week!

Hi Robin - I’m having to squeeze you in at halftime today. Ha ha I love football. These recipes were so nostalgic for me. We always had buttermilk cornbread with pinto beans or with navy beans. We had them pretty regularly growing up. I prefer that type of cornbread to the sweet cornbread. I love pomegranates in different kind of salads and I get the seeds out the same way you did. I have to say that some of your subscribers left some sweet comments for me last week. I always forget that other people are reading these comments, I always think I’m just talking to you personally. Anyway I did appreciate the things they said. Thanks for this great video. Love in Christ. Back to football.

Hi Robin! I had to come back and report that I made the yummy granola bars! Even with the price of eggs, I really like that this recipe has that extra protein. I added dates, pepitas, and a sprinkle of sea salt to the top. As for the pomegranate - I think I may have missed the boat - my 2 grocery stores didn't have any☹ but I'll keep checking! The seeding process just looks so fun! Might have to put it on my to-do list for later in the year - I read that pomegranates have a short season. I love learning new things - thank you again! Hope you're having a great week!

My dad used to make us creamed chipped beef (dried beef gravy) all fancy like over biscuits. It's still one of my all time faves. When I make it if I have heavy cream or half and half in the fridge, I add a dollup for some extra richness. I tested a recipe for America's Test Kitchen last year for a rice krispie bar that is so good and packed with protein (and no marshmallows!) and have made it repeatedly. I cut them and wrap them for snacks when I need protein. I had wrapped them in brown parchment paper and tied with twine very similar to your granola bars because thar was what I had on hand. I feel totally on point now.

You should try hot water cornbread. You may already know about it being from the south (she’s from NC too). About as budget friendly as it gets. No eggs. Most of the recipes don’t call for it but my mom used some milk in hers. She also added a slice of stale bread. All amounts are approximate because I had to right them down as I made it with her - 1 cup cornmeal, 1 slice stale bread, 1 tsp salt, very hot water, milk. Combine cornmeal and crumbled bread. Add very hot water until just wet. Add milk until consistency of very thick cake batter. Heat oil (she used Crisco) in pan until cornbread mixture sizzles. Drop moisture by spoonfuls in hot oil. Cook until brown on one side and then turn. Drain on paper towel covered plate.

I soak dried beef in cold water for a half hour to remove some of the salt, drain well and sauté in a tablespoon of butter. I then add a can of Cream of Mushroom soup and half a can of milk to the beef and heat through. No need to thicken, and the soup adds a lot of flavor to the dish. My husband also adds diced fresh mushrooms to the recipe to add more “umami” when he cooks this for breakfast.

I appreciate you sharing the "fails" along with the wins so we can relate. My husband and I love creamed dried beef and have it about once a month. I can't have gluten so I use corn starch to thicken ... I add 3 T. of corn starch to 2 and 1/2 cups milk and stir until it dissolves and then add that to the skillet and stir over the heat until it thickens, then add the dried beef, S & P to taste. I like mine over a gluten free toasted English Muffin and my husband eats his over toast. I remember making this with my Mom when I was young and she always let me sprinkle in the beef. Memories ... Take care Robin.

Now for the chipped beef on toast, it was a breakfast favorite when I was a girl. Whenever my older cousin spent the night or babysat for us she would make it for breakfast. I’ll have to revisit that an make it for my husband. And…I’m going to call my cousin. You’ve made me think of her. Oh…the bread pudding…yes. Smaller cubes work best but it’s still delicious. If anyone is curious and wants a replacement for eggs in baked goods since the price is so high-- you can make a "flax egg" for 1 to 1 substitution... 1 table spoon of ground (aka meal) flax and 3 tablespoons of water and set for at least 5 minutes will yield 1 egg. $3.48 for 16 oz (32 tablespoons) of ground flax at my local Walmart. 🥧🥚

I now make my own bread as I can’t have anything with soybean oil in it, and every loaf of bread I checked at the grocer’s contains that as one of the top ingredients! I use a bread machine to make my yeast bread. Using the exact same recipe, on the same day, I have had one loaf that rose so much it had a huge muffin top on it, one that was only about 4 inches tall, and one that just barely came to the top edge of the bucket! I make 3-4 loaves when I’m making bread. I haven’t tried my sourdough loaves in it yet.

Hi Robin! What a wonderful idea! Thank you for taking the time to do the research to look for recipes from the Great Depression era! Everything you showed us interests me, so I will keep those recipes and try them out. I don’t have a cast-iron skillet, though. I will find a way to use something similar to cook the cornbread. In these more difficult times, it’s good to have budget friendly recipes like those you showed us today, and it inspires me to find ways to be more frugal. Thank you again, Robin! God bless you! 🌹💖🙏
