I'm glad somebody else is getting it :) To me it's cool seeing the thing come back to life, these machines were built with a purpose, it's very cool to see them realize their purpose again. It's never lost on me, that yes there are a few things not working but once you fix those hundreds of other little things do their thing to make it work. So for every bulb that's burnt out there's a bulb socket that still works if the bulb is good, LOL. Or the switches haven't been hit in 20 years but the ball rolls over it and the switch works. So it's easy to see the parts that don't work but MOST of the parts DO still work.

Hey Ron - one thing you might consider for really bad copper corrosion like this is copper foil tape. You can cut it to form new PCB traces for the big stuff like that ground plane. It can then be bonded electrically by soldering it to the remains of the original trace. It would be a bit fiddly for the thin traces, of course. Good work getting it fixed! I have some things I need to go back and pry apart myself to see if they might be victims of corrosion...

Hey Ron - here’s another neat trick for you. When you have traces shorted together, measure the resistance between them in several different places. With a good voltmeter, you will get a lower resistance CLOSER to the short. I see that you read 0.3 ohms at the ROM chip, I’d bet that you would have read lower at the CPU, then even lower at the external header. You wouldn’t believe the ridiculous tiny shorts we’ve found on newly manufactured boards using that trick.

I always do vinegar and do a wash and alcohol on any boards I have battery leakage on. It actually nautralizes the alkaline and makes sure that any leakage that might be in the through holes is neutralized and gone. If you did not do the vinegar step you could be back repairing the board as the alkaline has started back up again and eaten up stuff again. And it is a crapshoot with damage that bad it could cost just as much to repair the board then to just get another board. As I know some board repair places can charge a premium for repairing a board. And I just had a thought though that it would be cool to get a board kit for something like this board and put one together. Would be really cool if there is any one doing pinball board kits for the bigger boards? I know there are the do it yourself kits for displays. :) Now I kinda want a big hefty board to put together on a stream now. xD And what people telling you ya aint doing it right? Why does the flippers coils have to need that big Flipper RELAY on the power supply board? Why would a "bead blaster" help clean up the PCB board from hydrochloric acid damage? The What is the IC chips that is next to the RAM chip doing to the RAM chip because you mentioned they work together because not sure that that IC chip does.
@DavidWilliams-rn6uq4 жыл бұрын
The 5101 RAM is a low-power device, it provides 256 4-bit locations. The pinball manufacturers used it because it only consumes 10 micro amps (uA) of current when in standby mode - thereby being well-suited to being held up by a battery. 10 uA is a TEEEEENY amount of current, people.
@LyonsArcade4 жыл бұрын
The reason they use that flipper relay is because the power to the flippers is continuously on, but controlled by the flipper switches.... so they want to be able to turn it off when they want to. So the other solenoids only turn on for a split second, but the flippers have to stay on while the game is credited up... so instead of using a transistor to drive the flippers and be turned on and off by the flipper buttons they just use the transistor to turn the relay on, which means power is always there whenever you hit the button. There's no hydrocloric acid damage on these, it's alkaline damage and the corroded parts need to be removed so a bead blaster would be good at that... The 5101 ram next to the other ram works like David said, it's a battery backed chip designed to save the settings and the high scores.
@waynegram89074 жыл бұрын

Is there a reason you don't use copper tape for those heavy ground traces? Many of your videos I've noticed that you lean more toward long solder joints instead.
@LyonsArcade4 жыл бұрын
Well there's several reasons, the copper tape can touch other things which would be a problem since everything's exposed.... it needs to be shaped.... you have to purchase it.... the ground trace runs all the way around the board so the trace is only running to a few components and doesn't necessarily need to be thick.... I have solder in one hand and capacitor legs in the other so it's easy to use what's at hand... It works..... it gets rid of literal trash that's laying around (the capacitor legs)... you often have a cap leg already there because it's sticking through the hole so it's easy to use it as a bridge... I just don't see any reason to buy copper tape and then sit around waiting on it to get here, when I can have the board fixed in an hour with what I already have and it works fine, doesn't cost more and all the reasons above. to me it's as weird as somebody (you're the 10th person today to ask this exact same question)... it's as weird as somebody saying "Is there a reason your work bench is brown????"

@@LyonsArcade Bicarb neutralises acids, unless the cell on the board was an alkaline cell, the cell will most invariably be an acid based electrolyte, most PCB based battery backup's are. If you wet the board and dab a few grains on the board and it fizzez, then you have acid battery. Cleaners I use... IPA, Lab grade Alcohol or Lab grade Acetone, most of the time its IPA because Acetone and lab grade alcohols are hard to come by here. For the benefit of future owners repairing something in 20 years time, would it be worth leaving notes inside the machine that explains what changes you made, why, and point them to any reference sources that detail the changes...? In software we call this the "version history" that answers the "when" "what" and "why." (Though I am sad to relate that far too many software writers and maintainers don't include such and should have their legs slapped.)

I think that would be a good idea, thanks Dave!

There's a bunch of people messing with the bally and stern boards because they were in many many machines, so i'm not the only one :) Thanks for watching (again)

Another great resource for fixing early Bally/Stern that I use all the time: techniek.flipperwinkel.nl/ballyss/rep/index1.htm

That's a mirror of the PinRepair site I use all the time too, there was a whole bunch of Drama that went down years back so people made a bunch of mirrors of it, the more info that's out there the merrier though!

@@LyonsArcade oh wow I actually didn't know about all of that. The link I used is the site I googled a few years back when I started working on these. I just like to share knowledge as there are plenty of people that don't know it's out there.

Yeah it's a shame really but the companies only wanted these to last a couple years so they weren't concerned :)

Caustic vs Acid. Acid is easy to remove with just water. Caustic...not so much. Your method of using vinegar, water, and alcohol is sound.

You are working way too hard. Once you have scraped away the solder mask and have removed the parts you can use PCB echant or hydrochloric acid on the board to remove the corrosion and get down to the clean copper. After that it takes very little sanding. I would also go with NVRam on these and Bally boards.

O.K., I'll stop doing it, thank you for your criticism
