Have a 1950's come with cove ceilings. Big build up curve up top. Chicken wire in it. or rather stucco mesh. Recreated it in a few basement rooms. Added sand to setting compound, ez sand. Not easy to sand with sand in it. You just have to lay it down nicely and finish it nice. Super fun in the end. Coated the wall with it to. Sanded plaster is upstairs. Or veneer coating on the setting gypsum floated layer. Button board, setting gypsum float, then veneer sand and plaster of paris. which is way harder durable than setting mud or ez sand.

I did my first rounded cornerbead last year on a small stairwell shelf. I thought the extended profile of the bead would automatically give me tons of room to work with. Turns out, it isn't that generous. I should have done what you did and double-checked the entire length, both sides. For where it was, it turned out fine. If it had been in a living room or kitchen I would have had a fit.

Ben awesome video 👍 may i ask, do you have a video showing how to repair those small seasonal gaps between the ceiling and the wall? I’ve got a few mostly in the bathroom. The gaps are about two to three inches long by 1/4 inch. Mostly noticeable in the winter. Everyone says just chalk em. But I think I remember a video where you showed us to just tape the cracks. Thanks
@vancouvercarpenter10 ай бұрын
Try fixing them in the winter when they show up. Make sure to carve out the old tape and really fill the gap with mud and let it dry before taping. This might help the drywall stay in it's winter position. If that fails, then caulk it.

One thing that would help me understand better is if you explain what you're trying to achieve with the angle of the bead and stuff. It's not super clear to me what angle it's supposed to be at. Do you just try to get it 90 deg or is there more to it?
@vancouvercarpenter10 ай бұрын
Sorry. I realized after that there definitely could have been more explanation on a few things. Yes. You want the bead square to the corner. There should be an equal amount of fill on both sides.

Question to anyone willing to answer. Are taping knives supposed to be flexible? I have an Anvil, (Home Depot brand) 4 inch taping knife, and it seems stiff for a taping knife, but I also have no reference to how stiff, or flexible they are supposed to be. I've used it on the ceiling corner joints in 3 rooms of my home, and even though it's my go to knife, I always end up fighting with it. Thank you to anyone who answers this question.

Can you use paper tape when joining fresh drywall to painted drywall? I ask because compound tends to bubble when applied over pointed drywall so I’d figure it will bubble under the tape no matter what?
@gwynjudd10 ай бұрын
I have done so in the past and it works fine. Make sure that the mud isn't too dry and you are getting enough under the tape.

You can. And no it doesn't bubble under the tape from paint. But is sure does on the next two coats!!!
@michaelkistner628610 ай бұрын
Sure. I've done it a bunch of times. What I found is that primer on the existing wall before taping makes finishing go a lot better. Less bubbles and the sanded edge blends perfectly into the old surface.

Do you usually add glue to your hot mud for the corner bead? I’ve once installed a corner bead with hot mud and it did not stick well so I just do it with regular mud.
