Good stuff Pete. One point to make. A 60doesnt actually spin more than a 58 usually. It stops quicker due to land angles. Research by James Richard suggests 56 is usually around most spinning wedge

Kirkland balls are great and in Canada the less than a dollar per ball, I bought the 50-degree club and from 110 yards and in my club stops and doesn't roll off the green... I love the wedge

Pete's wedges: 1 white mark from consistent ball strikes. My wedges: entire club face white and somehow manage to get some on the shaft too 🙄

I know this is old post, but anyway - the reason for spin results is the face has significant effect on spin for short chips (around 25 yds and less). For 3/4 and full shots it is the grooves that have most effect. That is why vokey is better on the trackman, but smithworks spins more around green

Great to see you test these! I have a set of 3 & glad I took the gamble. As a social player, these give me loads of confidence from 100yds in and especially around the greens! Loads of fun & I’ve had plenty of comments. After half a dozen rounds it doesn’t destroy the balls nearly as much either. Going to order the conforming set for comps! Take Rick on with these!

Thx for sharing this Peter! In US $'s there's only a $10 difference when price shopping against the SM8... I've never hit either, but, watching your videos and others (your pals James or Rick, and always TXG), the quality and consistency of a Vokey is going to get my money. This was a great comparison Mr. Finch!

GREAT VIDEO. I think this is why launch monitor numbers with wedges is way overrated when it comes to spin. There are so many other factors that come into it on course. Like the ball you use, the conditions, strike, weight of the club etc etc

Pete you rock dude! Love the content! Do you have (or could you do) a video on how to properly draw and fade tee shots?
@VishalPatel-eb2ls4 жыл бұрын
Love the video Pete! a reason for the reduction in spin of the illegal wedge could be how damaged the golf ball became during the test? Seems there was less cover on the ball at the end of the test and so may be if the illegal ball was tested at the end of the test then there you go. Keep up the great videos, hope you get to 1 million subscribers soon! :D

Hey Peter, I’d love to see you play a round of golf with the most extreme clubs, ball. From driver to putter, see if it makes a any difference to score. Also maybe a full illegal set mix & match most extreme clubs with crazy claims, head to head with Rick, he can choose his most extreme. Or one of you play with a cheap set. Keep it up Thanks.

Hey Pete, here’s the explanation as to why the illegal wedge spins less when measured; Grooves are not to increase friction between the ball and face, they are to dissipate water, grass and dirt away from the ball-to-face contact area. When testing on a mat, that variable in the equation is gone, meaning you’re left with a wedge that overall has less face-to-ball contact. There was a test done a few years ago done by someone using different custom wedges with no grooves, milling and normal grooves, and it was found that on a mat the face with no grooves had the highest amount of spin, given the highest amount of face-to-ball contact. In your on course test the illegal one seemed to spin the most, which was mostly due to the water and wet grass on the ground. Basically, you used the illegal wedge in the perfect conditions for it to excel, and also used it in one of the worst conditions for it to excel when using a mat indoors. Side note: Ralph Maltby played for an extended period with grooveless irons, just to see what he'd shoot. His scores were better with the grooveless clubs than with a set with grooves.

I’ve played for 14 years, off 3, and can honestly say these are the best wedges I’ve ever used. Ridiculous control & the feel off the face and weight distribution is absolutely supreme, I’ve never played with anything like it. I want Smithworks to design a whole set please!!

Great video. I love the adaptability of the wedge game, these look like something I could have fun with. I had a wedge fitting and the Callaway MD5 was my choice, I love them! These are pretty cool though. P.S your videos are much better with your outtakes left in 😁👍
@fermentednug4 жыл бұрын
If the face breaks the surface of the ball it’ll produce less spin because it creates less friction. The cover is tearing instead of grabbing, thus super spin when you don’t hit it hard, but torn ball and less spin if hit hard.
@therealjigsawjp4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Pete! How about a future video of 9 holes, with a bag filled of all illegal clubs! Lol. That would be interesting.

I bought a 58⁰ legal one a month ago, it was amazing at first but the x's at the bottom seem to have worn away and it isn't spinning as much now, which is disappointing, I've gone back to using my 54⁰ Vokey SM7 instead 😬

Perhaps the faster strike from a full swing reduces the time the grooves have to interact with the ball?

Peter, have you ever looked in to potentially testing out some GolfWorks/Maltby branded clubs? I currently work there and they are some nice clubs. My issue though is that I’m left handed and can’t use many of their clubs. It’d be interesting to see you test them out and to see what you think of them.

Would a wedge with "prongs" rather than all these razor sharp grooves not be more effective? As in no grooves but an open pattern like the old Stickle Bricks toys, spaced to coincide with the usual dimple spacing on a golf ball so they can sink into the ball for grip rather than just slicing away at the raised part?

Trevor Dickie this is golf. We police ourselves. Would you give yourself a better lie in a competitions? Same with playing with conforming clubs and balls. Not too is cheating. Golf is about personal integrity and responsibility. If just playing for fun and not for comp or money or handicap, then fill your boots and have a blast.
