When approaching a project like Flying Coney you can either break down and cry or you take it with a bit of humor. Being born and raised in Vienna our, well mostly Daniels, dry and dark sense of humor is part of our national identity. It’s self ironic, a bit charming, a bit offensive and sometimes subtle and not always meant to be funny. But it’s not there to hurt anybody. It’s there to make you smile. Smile not lough! If you need an instruction: It’s the kind of joke you hear, think „wait what?“, then you think again and then it makes you smile. Not all people are able to think long enough to get to the smiling bit which is very unfortunate. Anyway, don’t take the videos (or the thumbnails) too serious, we certainly don’t! And as a general mindset: Don’t take live too seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

Just looking at the burning I believe it is all lies. If the deck is timber and burning it would also be burning in front of the superstructure as well. Boats like that and this side are all steel decks and they don't burn, it is staged, a pack of lies.

That aft deck superstructure is a nice living space but sure isnt very pretty (or historic). I was wondering if you were going to remove it and then you mentioned it right at the end of the video
@FlyingConey Жыл бұрын
It's not about how it looks or if it's historic or not. Originally Flying Coney had a deck surrounding the wheelhouse. We want to lower the aft deck down to bulwark hight. That gives us enough room underneath for a decent sized aft cabin. The high quarter deck like it is at the moment makes it difficult to move for and aft on the boat. So for us it's a practical decision in order to make a sailing ship out of her. For a motorsailer it's fine and not all that ugly. Maybe a little balcony aft would be nice...

Not worth talking about 😂 It was just a 1000°C hot flame but luckily Cees put it out with his glove. Initially we asked if the yard can weld if the insulation is still in place, they told us that's only possible in other yards because here the ships always start to burn.

It's just a little joke because of the 1000°C cutting torch. We've been very careful on removing anything that it doesn't end up like in the thumbnail. But these things happened in the past. I'm wondering if the haters are just disappointed that we didn't failed and getting closer to launch each end every episode. For me viewers and subscribers are not just numbers. I find it quite amazing that 40-60 000 people are watching each episode at the moment. That's about the same as Austrias biggest football stadium can hold. @Who.is.Clinton Жыл бұрын
Just a heads up. Been watching your video's, all of them, but your content could be more general, this whole video was about a small section of removed plate and three holes being welded? I saw no fire? "We set our boat on fire?"

@FlyingConey Жыл бұрын
Thank for the compliment on video quality and presentation. That means a lot for us. After all we came here on YT to share videos. It's about the content not so much about the thumbnails. Unfortunately even with the better quality videos we're getting less and less new viewers. The Algorithm is only reaching out to the same people. We'll see if the clickbait helps growing the channel. Also greeting from Austria 😉

Sorry for the clickbait. Cees asked me if we would like to have the welds grinded down with the angle grinder or with the cutting torch. Of course we picked the cutting torch since it's faster and you've already seen enough grinding. The thumbnail is just my dark sense of humor because he was "setting our boat on fire." With the cutting torch he can melt away only the welds and the remains of the old overplating without hurting the steel underneath it. I found this quite amazing.

If you clean a bearing with air pressure, it can over spin, and if the books I've read are right, it could disintegrate the bearing and have pieces of it flying everywhere. Yeah, what do I think? Well, I hope all the blank spots of steel are covered so its good for now until you can get the blasting of the hull done. I know there is some time between the hull repairs and the ship now. So I actually wonder what you did to it, and what it looks like now. :) I really wonder about the mast configuration. There are so many options. Will it go all the way down to the bottom of the ship? It probably is the strongest like that, but there is concrete on the on the bottom at the hull. 1 mast? 2 masts? 3 masts? Like of of these type ships: Catboat, Sloop, Yawl, Ketch, Cutter, Schooner, Brig, Brigantine, Barque, Barquentine, or Full-rigged ship? There is something to choose here ("Sail plan"). At "Rig (sailing)" I'm seeing a lot of lot of choices for sails. As said before, I would hatch up every door and compartmentise before going onto the ocean. If heard scary stories about sailing into some 40 foot containers floating under the surface, sinking ships in the middle of nowhere. That is some horror scenario, and that does happen. Well very happy for you, that it got so far that it made it into the water (almost). But of course I've heard from you that its floating, going to places.. Any way, good luck! Ill be watching. I have built and designed over 50 yachts mostly built from steel I have owned steel boats most of my life and I have repaired and refurbished many vessels including ship repairs. I wish I had known about your boat earlier as I could have saved you money. Just looking at your pics much of the damage has been caused by electrolysis not corrosion. If you have completed the underwater work you need to place Zinc blocks (anodes) in proper places. How much corrosion is on the interior of the hull? I don't understand how burning the boat will contribute anything good to the vessel. It's your boat, good luck regards Allan Miell
@FlyingConey Жыл бұрын
The complete electrolysis damage happened in about two years. The previous owner has redone the electrics and has mixed two types of anodes. Hull thickness is still very good and we had that thickness report. So it was a reasonable decision to buy without a haul out but we knew there was a risk. But it's more about the unplanned work, not so much about the additional money.

What do I think? Well I rather think Wood decking over steel might not be the best idea, but it's your boat Daniel ;-)
@FlyingConey Жыл бұрын
You'r correct a wooden deck over a steel deck isn't the best idea. But at the moment we've a rotten wooden deck made somewhat watertight by laying a steel deck above it. Of course we would remove the steel deck and then the old wooden deck and then we lay a new wooden deck.
@Mark-tb3kw Жыл бұрын
@Sailing Flying Coney mixing materials never ends well. Put on a nice watertight steel deck. Also keep in mind the deck adds a large amount of structure.
@FlyingConey Жыл бұрын
As said, the original deck is wood and it's still in place. Since the boat was originally designed as a wooden boat with steel frames a wooden deck is the proper way of doing it. What you shouldn't do is laying a wooden deck above a steel deck.

One thing really leads to another here. The raised poop deck is very unpractical especially when sailing. If we lower it we have to modify the wheel house. The positionn of the main mast is exactly were the front of the wheelhouse is. But modification like that always had been done on Flying Coney. Mostly we're just removing the modification that had been done in the early 90s.

Not trying to be mean or anything, but, it's pronounced E Lect-troly a sis if your open to it, here's a short clip that explains how to pronounce it ..kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHrbaqt7bLmUgtE. When you get rid of that rusty surface don't make the metal too smooth its better to have a rough surface with a grinder for instance, so that, when you paint it the paint has something to adhere too hope that makes sense. Keep up the hard work it will surely pay off in the end and you'll have a awesome boat. Cheers.

Subscribing is a service KZbin offers for the viewers. It's not for the creators. We need to grow and if clickbait helps it's clickbait. I ask myself how much you like the content if you're thinking of unsubscribing because of one little joke in the thumbnail.

@@FlyingConey I don't see it as a joke, I see it as disinformation. And that's what it is!

@@FlyingConey Hey, I'm a new subscriber, I love your content, attitude and work ethics, and bringing back to life and wonder what is essentially a scrap boat is a wonderful endeavour. So even if you lose the subscriber above, he's been replaced by me 🤗🥰

Maybe you have to watch it a second time to get the joke.

In cases where the thumbnail is not a random screenshot and the title is not a simple, uninteresting summary of the video's content, there will inevitably be individuals who accuse the creator of clickbait tactics.
@FlyingConey Жыл бұрын
Well we did set the boat on fire but I have to admit the thumbnail is a bit clickbait. The fun part is when you think about why people are more likely to click on the thumbnail then.

You know how we humans are naturally drawn to things that grab our attention. Have you ever been in a crowded place and suddenly heard someone yell or scream? What's the first thing you do? You look. It's just our instinct to turn our attention towards anything that stands out.

I studied media on the university before I thought sail racing is a better career choice. It would be easy for YT to promote more real content and to punish clickbait. Creator, viewers and the algorithm are in a triangular relationship. We want to get views, you want to watch something and the algorithm is providing you, hopefully, with the content you enjoy the most. But we're also trying to adjust our content so that we're getting more views. What a dilemma... People are clicking, we think we have to do it to get clicks and YT is thinking oh great I recommend more of this stuff.

Great video. Please speak a bit slowly and enonciate. With light lisp and accent, some sentences get garbeled. Great job.

cant wait to see rigging plan...
@FlyingConey Жыл бұрын
Hi Edward, once Flying Coney was a sailing ship she was rigged as a two masted tops'l schooner. She was gaff rigged and had square topsails on the forward mast. You can look up the sailing ship JANTJE. She has a similar size, hull shat and that particular rig. Another option would be to exchange the forward gaff sail with two or three staysails. That would be easier to handle and a bit cheaper and look more like a brigantine.
