Extreme Light Weight High Precision Hunting Rifle | 6.5 PRC Cartridge

Master riflesmith Geoff Montgomery from Wyoming Gun Company walks us through his process of how he fits and chambers a barrel to a Defiance “Anti” action for an extreme lightweight precision hunting rifle. Demonstrating his process of checking aspects of the components and centering the super short 18-inch proof research barrel in the lathe for machining of breech features and precise fitment of the receiver to the barrel. This ensures everything is concentric to the centerline of the barrel’s bore to guarantee a precision rifle build. Geoff shows you how he uses measurements from the custom receiver and bolt to determine the correct fitting and chambering dimensions of the cartridge with headspace gauges for a 6.5 PRC cartridge. He then moves to the muzzle end, demonstrating the techniques for finishing up that end, complete with a flat/60-degree crown and ⅝-24 threads for a suppressor adapter, and the challenges associated with a short barrel such as this. Once machining is done, Geoff shows torquing the barrel, checking headspace, and ensuring a “match” or “tight” chamber well within safe limitations while preventing unwanted case stretching.
Weight comes in at 3 pounds 2 oz (roughly) as-is. Once completed, this extremely lightweight-high, precision hunting rifle build will perform incredibly well while being as lightweight as possible.

(13:31) before starting thread an aluminum or brass slave collar that matches your action ID at 18tpi or whatever your particular action is, then when you're finished with the breach end before taking it out of the lathe put your pre-made slave collar on and turn it concentric with a scratch pass, and when you flip around the work to on the muzzle you won't have to deal with those shims. I believe this will be more concentric with a three jaw Chuck that three separate shims. Keep the slave collar just in case you do another action👍

For the short barrels, make yourself an extension that threads over the tenon so you can get it all the way through the headstock and indicate like normal

You did a great job with this. I do the same thing shorter barrels. Only I use a collet chuck. I really miss my south bend heavy 10 when doing barrel work. Thing had a 13” long spindle. Absolutely perfect for doing barrels down to 16”.

This is so excellent!111thank you for showing. I live on an island in southeast alaska. Always wanted a very light rifle. We have sitka blacktail. Small awesome deer. Small caliber. However we have tons of brown bear. The saying around here when you shoot and have buck down that’s a dinner bell for the brownies. Any suggestions for a caliber for those situations? Great channel
