Damn I remember those roaring engines from even when I was 6-7 years old. I’m from Germany and my grandparents used to take me with them to Florida for vacation. Cape Coral to be precise, with a rented house and a boat. Just sometimes we came across some powerboat with these gargling V8‘s and I still remember them to this day how they amazed me. I’m 22 now and still miss those days, also this is just music to my ears

Looks to be an old scarab. They were super heavy with extremely deep vee's. The hull design is probably the biggest speed-limiting factor, other than engine size and prop. That being said, once the scarab pilot powered up, he took off from the dinghy pretty quickly, and the scarab will laugh at rough water that the dinghy wouldn't dare enter. There's just no replacement for displacement, engine or hull.

That may be loud for Western European standards but, that is pretty tame and quiet by US standards. I am more impressed with how tight that bridge was.

I think you have gotten the wrong idea about what we consider loud. This was simply considered to be loud from the perspective of someone who is not a powerboater. There are literally loads of fast and loud boats all over Europe. We have everything from quad Sterling Nor-Tech’s to triple installs in Fountains, Outerlimits and similar Vee’s to ear piercing triple and quad outboard Skaters with Merc 2.5 Drags and so on. My previous boat was a 38 Lightning with twin 850 Zul’s that ran dry exhaust. Europe, Australia and the UAE can easily hang tween it comes to loud and fast powerboats. Don’t make assumptions just because you see someone with an old Scarab and a pair of old 454 330’s. That’s not our definition of loud. That’s our definition of old and slow.

Mines a 1980 Wellcraft Nova 250XL Offshore. It has carberated twin Merc 260 inboards. I don't think the outdrives could handle the torque of turbos at this age. Especially PreAlfas like mine has.

Actually, that is plenty quiet, the amount of noise a motor makes is dependent on how big the motoe is and how big the cam is in relation to the displacement of the the engine...unless it's turbocharged
