I’ve been wanting for several months, to get a few things off my chest regarding extreme minimalism. Along with discussing the many mixed varieties of comments and opinions about extreme minimalists, that are left here on my channel and in broader minimalist discourse.
I’m going to address several key themes about minimalism and its extreme counterparts. In no particular order. The use of the word ‘extreme’, how it and the standpoints in which extremity derives, are perspectival. How the use of the titles ‘extreme minimalist’, at least here on my channel, are a pragmatic means to an end. For the sole purpose of SEO (search engine optimisation). As I would like for KZbin viewers to be able to find my videos. This is called discoverability. The odds are already stacked against video creators due to the amount of content creators. Geographical location, which I believe is another hurdle for some of us, is another motivational factor of why I title my videos in certain ‘extreme’ ways.
I will furthermore be setting some personal boundaries. That are in keeping with my minimalist lifestyle and mindful mindset. I will be answering some questions, that some of my recent decluttering videos seem to have provoked. That is, ‘why be so extreme’ and ‘why declutter so much.’ Moreover, I will be exploring statements people have made regarding the psychological quality of myself and other extreme minimalists. Whilst exemplifying subjective truth alone is not a sound epistemic value for judging other peoples minimalist lifestyle. I will attempt to use this analogy to clarify why for some minimalists practicing minimalism, extreme or not, perspectival wholeness, is what solves the puzzle of truth. One subjective standpoint is just one piece of the puzzle. And yet, here we find ourselves… in our own point of view, with our own agency, and free will. Still true, our truth, but not whole. Any attempt at objective truth must seek out as many truths as possible. An ‘Omnitruth’ That only the universe knows.
If you find this topic interesting read Nietzsche Perspective theory or Perspectivism, Furthermore, any philosophical paper on error theory. I think metaphysics of reality coincide quite well with minimalism and discussions on opinion and the material world.

I'm so sorry you have had negative comments. I don't understand why people leave negative comments - if they don't like your lifestyle, they should just watch videos they do like. I would like to assure you that there are us followers/friends/supporters who love what you are doing, who tune in to follow your process, and adore your brilliant personality. I like to hear about how you make the decision to let go of things (it helps me let's go of my things) and I like to hear about your numbers of items, again, it helps me declutter. Please don't take some negative comments as representative of us all. WE LOVE YOU. Please just keep being you and doing you. And if the comments make you feel bad, turn the comments off. You shouldn't EVER be made to feel bad by people who don't even know you. Don't let the buggers bring you down. Sending you love from NZ.❤❤❤

Ohhh my gosh! When you said that someone had stated that extreme minimalists are like this because they’re empty. If anything I think it’s the exact opposite. Not to say everyone with an abundance of things is empty but we know that many people shop because they’re trying to fill a void. The exact reason that it’s hard to declutter. I need to declutter but I don’t find it difficult. I know that they’re just THINGS. I think minimalists are smart. They’re making it easier for themselves and they all have their own reasons. I want an easier life as I struggle with my health and the clutter also causes me anxiety. I’m so over having so much stuff.
@SagelifeMinimalism

That was one of my thoughts too, re: shopping 🛍️ etc. Good point about the converse regarding decluttering too. That is, yes it’s probably why some people find it hard to declutter as they may be keeping the stuff to fill their void. Thank You 😊

I think you are fantastic! I love your videos and what you are doing. While I'm not an extreme minimalist but working on it, my family looks at me as one I think. I have moved so many times and I just can't and don't want to move a bunch of stuff. My mom is a hoarder and my dad is opposite but he is not allowed to give his things away that he doesn't want or use because of my mom. It causes him stress and even hives at times. It makes me sad. I'm single so I feel free to follow my minimalist mind. I do however live with my adult disabled son and am gently trying to help him pare down. Thankfully he is open to it. I am so inspired by you. Thank you for sharing your journey.

Thank You. That must be an incredibly difficult situation for you and your dad and even your mom if it’s something she’s trying to combat. I sometimes watch these therapy documentaries about hoarding where the therapists will try get to the bottom of why people hoard to try and cut the problem off at the route. It’s a very complicated mental health condition isn’t it. I know I’ve seen some people deal with it by compromising with their spouse that they will be allowed one room in the home that is solely theirs to have as they please. Whether that’s the hoarder or the non hoarder is to be agreed upon obviously. But then at least each person feels they have their own space. I think because of the pragmatics that obviously the hoarders have more stuff it often ends up being them that have the majority of space. All the best with your journey 😊

I love extreme minimalism. People who are negative about it are uncomfortable about it themselves, but it is a personal lifestyle choice - one that can be extremely beneficial. In many parts of the world, people are living with less how we in the west consider extreme, but 'extreme' is just a label that's been attached to it because we're so used to having excess. There's nothing extreme about 'extreme' minimalism. Humans were never meant to manage and store loads of stuff. Also, it doesn't matter what you post about - you will always always attract negative comments. Stay authentic to you and carry on. Even the most inspirational and influential people have dealt with negativity. If you're ruffling feathers due to living an unconventional lifestyle, remember that's everything to do with the other person and not you.

I wanted to make this video as I thought some of the comments could make a great discussion. I’m also glad to have unburdened myself with carrying around these thoughts 😂 and so I don’t have to explain everything again. @@SagelifeMinimalism It may be triggering them because it pings at their possible hoarding tendencies, or because we are encouraged to own a lot of stuff… especially by the media and advertisers. It’s not easy to let go of our things, because in doing so we also have to declutter aspects of ourselves that are no longer relevant or serving us. Or we have to declutter our fantasy selves. It can be a huge conundrum. In my own life very few of my friends are actually willing to ask themselves why they need to own so much.

I started a minimalist channel 2 months ago and while the majority of comments have been lovely, there was 1 that called me a selfish parent, I was inflicting my lifestyle on my Daughter which was cruel and I was basically starving her and I needed therapy. It has taken a toll on my head space for sure.

It’s close minded for people to judge too isn’t it when they don’t know you or your lifestyle. There’s also a world of reasons for why it could be a great thing for children I imagine. For instance most people, if they lead a minimalist lifestyle they have more funds available for experiences, days out, education, hobbies, but most importantly more spare time to spend with their children. Growing up I had friends whose parents never gave them any time. They’d throw new toys or money at their kids but never give their time. I’m learning even after 2 years on KZbin that sometimes what we say in our videos, really triggers people’s own insecurity and guilt. I’m always trying to remember their reaction is about them not us. 😊

@@SagelifeMinimalism 100%. I was so upset I asked my 10 year old if she was happy with our lifestyle (even though I knew she was) She said pretty much the same. She spends more time with me than most of her friends do with their parents. She enjoys playing board games and going for nature walks and to the parks etc. She never feels embarrassed inviting her friends over as its always clean and tidy and her friends love the empty space in my home for them to play. And the money we save (I don't have much to start with!) we have been enjoying days out and holidays with. I never restrict what she has in her room but we compromise around the home, like you do with your partner and thankfully she said "I know if there's something I want to change I know you will for me but I'm happy as it is" 🩷 I'm not sure why I let 1 comment from someone who doesn't know us or how we live in detail take up so much of my head space, human nature I guess. I'm trying to concentrate on the hundreds of lovely kind comments I've had and not the 1 judgemental one. I think also the idea that being obsessed with numbers is toxic, isn't a fair judgement. I have ocd, and asd and it's actually quite impossible for my brain to function without considering numbers. It's very healthy and comes naturally to me. I think becoming competitive with others is where it could end up being toxic or damaging.

That is exactly the point I am making. that some comments have been that because I have counted quite a few times my possessions. A few have commented that I am obsessed with the numbers. That this is toxic. And alludes to a competitive frame of reference. All of which I am saying is simply not true for myself at least. I made this video to try raise the point that there are other perspectives out there. 😊

I have diagnosed OCD, with numbers. Counting occasionally is fun, intriguing, challenging in a positive way. Counting for more than an hour a day, everyday, is OCD. I can count my possessions for an update once a year, maybe once a month and that's okay. BUT if the OCD is giving me a hard time, I can be stuck counting my possessions and recounting and counting and counting again and again and not trusting myself with the number and getting caught up in it, for some kind of made up 'safety' reasons I made in my head.

On returning things to the op shop, i bought a coat for a trip interstate to go to a funeral, just gave it back to the same charity shop that I bought it from and now they have it marked at $5 more than i purchased it for - cost of living or appreciation? 😅

I can promise you I never started this way, which you can luckily tell from videos a year ago to even today. I'm not empty, not in any way. In fact, I live a better and amazing life, fuller than before emotionally, financially, time and physically. Its the same for me. People comment I have gone too far with the less toys and no books. They dont understand how often we are out and about playing or that I listen to an audiobook once a week minimum.

I wonder how they can possibly think they know it’s too far 😂 like, what they mean is it’s too far for them. But nobody is forcing them to live like that 😂 so they don’t have to worry about it 😂 It actually says more about the person commenting it doesn’t it 😊

@@SagelifeMinimalism I have OCD, so because of that I do have a 'too far' limit. But it's very obvious, when it's OCD (worry/fear) and when it's not (freedom/excitement)

I am curious, are you saving the couch until you leave on your trip, or do you use it as a guest bed?

We use it as a guest bed. We are also considering subletting for a while so may leave the sofa and bed in the apartment. Also we love snuggling up on the sofa together. My partner is 6foot so needs a long sofa 😂 He can’t stretch out on even 3 seaters 😂

Maybe I can help you by telling you something that happened to me a few months ago online. I read comments on videos just like many others do. I was reading some nasty, downright evil comments on a video and I got "triggered" and replied to this man telling him what he said was terrible and illegal. He said more terrible things to me. I reprimanded him again. Then, a woman replied to me, "Mae stop. Please Stop!🤣". That is when I realized the nasty comments were all jokes to see if they could trigger anyone... I've noticed it happens on many videos on youtube since then... So, the next time you read a negative comment, just ignore it. You will not get your feelings hurt if you ignore it, agree?

When the comments are completely rude or terrible there actually less problematic for me 😊 I just block and delete those. Luckily I don’t have too many of them. It’s ones actually on the topic of extreme minimalism that I find most bothersome. Closed minded points people continually make. So rather than now ever wasting time replying I will probably just link this video as a response. 😊

I am also curious, when you travel, are you only going to hot places so yo do not have to have all the heavy layers, coats, gloves, scarves, etc,? I just enjoy listening to you.

Thank You ☺️ we will probably go to any cold places at the end, so we don’t have to take those items for the whole trip and just thrift them towards the end as needed.

Why do people always feel they have to label them selves? I’m not being negative, I just don’t understand. Who cares? I live , eat differently than others, but I don’t have a need to tell everyone. I don’t care what they think. It’s my business. But, you having a channel choose to share, which is great. But it should be no surprise to run in to not so good comments from others. People are people. Look at how the world is. So don’t take it personal. Do your thing and forget about the negativity.

I’ve always expected that I will run into negative comments. I just thought that the type of comments were rather absurd of late, given that my channel is about minimalism. Comments telling me not to declutter? I also thought the huge difference in opinion, made for an interesting discussion on what extremity actually means. I used my experience of the comments section to showcase and example this vast array of varying perspective. Which I actually wanted to make a video about as this too, has been part of my journey.
