I reuse my ziplock bags, unless they smell or had messy things in them. Quick rinse, dry over a wooden spoon, clean again. Obviously use your common sense. Also washing all your clothes after one wear makes no sense. Underwear, hot weather, sweating... yeah. But not everything. Sometimes I take a week without buying new groceries and just cook what I have at home. Regrowing lettuce, leek and such in water on the windowsill. Growing my veggies and herbs. Have a sodastreem, highly recommend it.

It's interesting to read people's thoughts, opinions, ideas. Someone thinks re- wearing clothes is gross. Well, if we're talking underpants, then, I will agree...but jeans & slacks, a cardigan sweater are a few examples of clothes that don't take on an odor after just a wearing or even two. My husband wears the same pair of jeans all week. They don't get dirty & they don't stink so why toss them in the laundry after just one use? In the summer, we generate more laundry just because a person gets hot, sticky. We already do most of what Tawny talked about. If you're a frugal person, you don't think twice about it. My husband & I lived at poverty level when we were newlyweds. There are things we had to do to keep our heads above water, so to speak. We never ran into financial problems because we were so careful. Nice job, Tawny!

I cut my own hair two weeks ago after putting off making a hairstylist appointment for months. My hair was down to my waist and I cut it to shoulder length myself, with no issues at all. Saved myself $40 right there! I also enjoy saving glass jars. I use them to store spices and grains, and even as makeup brush holders. I've never had to buy any small containers out of pocket. Oh also, as a new college grad, I don't have a car and instead spend about $200 more on rent in order to live within walking distance to my office. This way I don't even need to buy a bus pass since I will only take the bus once a week to buy groceries.

Thanks for giving me a good chuckle tonight & for making me realize Grandma had more of an impact on me than I realized. Thank goodness she lived through the depression and taught me how easy it is to take care of yourself, home & earth. It's so easy to do. Plus when you're living paycheck to paycheck, it helps a lot. What I do to save time in the shower and make my conditioner go for much longer, is to use a small quantity as a leave in conditioner. I usually mix up my own in a recycled plastic bottle. I use equal parts of cooled boiled water, conditioner of choice and a drop of Argan oil. After you shower, towel dry your hair and apply a small quantity to the ends of your hair only. Works very well.

My husband and I went carless almost 2 years ago. It helps that we are empty nesters, and I work from home. He does have a job, but can get there via public transportation or by riding a bike. We walk or take the bus or train everywhere we need to go or catch a ride with friends on occasion. We also rent out part of our home. It works because we're in a townhouse so have three levels. He and I moved into the basement, and my daughter and son-in-law have the top floor. That has three bedrooms, and they are able to use one room as a bedroom, one as an office, and one as a living room. There is also a full bathroom on their floor, so it feels like their own apartment. We share the main floor (living room, kitchen, dining room and half bath) and also share cooking responsibilities. Since we have separate living areas, it works out well and we all have alone time when we need it. They pay rent, which helps us, but the rent they pay is much lower than what they would pay anywhere else, so it also helps them.

@gomezaddams6470
@gomezaddams6470 7 жыл бұрын
Brianna V.B. you can use a tool and scrape the lipstick into a small container to keep it easy then melt it like a double boiler if you have a microwave you can do it really fast that be careful it only takes a couple seconds and make sure it's covered and it's in a microwavable container. It melts you can go to stores that sell soap making products, and they have little round containers with lids and you just pour it right in there not only does it kill the bacteria which can be serious but it makes a brand new lipstick that you can use a brush with I used to do it when I was a kid to make the colors I wanted cuz they didn't have them by Kid I mean in my twenties haha I hope that helps it's fun if nothing else. people might have the container around their house that's okay for them but I needed one that I could take with me so I had a professional one I also had a round container that was for lipstick that I just reused you can always add a little bit of cocoa butter or coconut fat but not too much or it'll take the color away. the fat will also melt and run around in your purse or whatever you're carrying it in if you have it with you. It usually works with just the lipsticks and less the really old. it was fun to watch them dry with all the Swirls and stuff it looks like a brand new product. people that asked me where I bought it I just smile as I can't remember

I second the part about cutting open the toothpaste tube. I have recently switched brands of toothpaste, and I now use the old stuff to clean the smooth top stove. Squirt just a little on the stove and rub with a slightly damp cloth. If you need a more abrasive cleaner, add a little baking soda. On that note, I just put soda in an old parmesan cheese container so that I can shake out just a little at a time. Also, if you have a boil over on the stove, sprinkle soda on it while still hot. Then when it cools, it will come right off.

When there was a water shortage I discovered it was possible to do loads with two thirds of a basin of water. Having brushed my teeth using a mug, I ran my sink of warm water. First of all I washed my face in it, then my hair, using the absolute minimum of shampoo. Then I washed my body all over in the slightly shampooey water. The water still looked quite clean. Then I rinsed out the T shirt, shorts & underwear I had worn the day before, which weren't really dirty, just needed refreshing, so I didnt need to add any detergent and thus didnt need extra water for rinsing. Next used that same water to clean around the bathroom using a cloth, cleaning the windowsill, bath & sink. There was still some left so I used that to clean the floor. There wasnt much left but I scooped it up in a plastic cup & threw it on the garden.

One sort of extreme thing we did was to install a homemade water catchment system and plumb the rainwater for flushing our toilets. (we have city water) We started with a couple of IBC totes...now we have 5 of them plumbed together in a system. We flush with this water, but we left the city hook up thingy ready to roll in case of power outage (it pumps water from our basement to upstairs toilets using an RV type water pump and could run on battery, too) or if we were to run out of rainwater. I asked for this system for Mother's Day 2016 and it's cut our water bill in half! WOOOOOOO---WEEEEEE! ;)

I have a cat and she is so cheap. The initial cost of spay, shots and a yearly check up. That's all. Her feed is cheap. She helps keep vermin from my house and I do love her. My dog is more expensive because when I go out of town I have to pay someone to walk, feed and water her plus she has monthly (or so) flea and heartworm medication. I do try to save on her too. She does eat left over bones, not over priced dog food and I send her to the groomer every three months to get washed and nail trimmed. I wash her in the interim myself. Her heartworm and flea meds are about 15.00 25.00 or so a month (sometimes I skip the flea meds and give her a flea bath instead, cheaper). Every third month I send her to the groomer for 30.00 a pop. It's cheaper for me to get a college student I know to walk, water and feed her the times I am gone (25.00 for a week) than board her. Plus, I trust the college student more because my dog is in her own home. So, my dog costs a little money, but I am frugal where I can be.

One addition to the use your clothes more than one time: once you do the laundry, pull the garment inside out and put it in a mesh laundry bag. Especially for more delicate clothing. This will protect the garment during washing so it doesnt wear out as much. It really does make a huge difference! Also, sew holes/tears. Take care of the garments. If you don't know how to, watch youtube tutorials & learn. Tip no 2: as for cutting your hair: youtube tutorials. There are easy ways to even get layers in your hair looking plenty proffessional on your own. You can still look & feel pretty/amazing/trendy even on a zero budget! The same goes for beauty products. There are DIY everything beauty wise, just do a google or youtube search (deodorants, makeup, scrubs, facial masks, toners, moisurisers, conditioner, hair spray etc!). For the kitchen: make washable napkins out of old worn out sheets & use instead of paper towels. Cleaning supplies: make your own cleaning supplies for bathroom/floors/kitchen out of cheap kitchen supplies you already have at home. How? Ask google or youtube. There are plenty of recepies. Just DIY as much as possible on as many areas as possible.

Just keep reading on growing your own food and there's so much you can get for practically free to add to what you're already doing over here where I live there's a place called Cash and Carry and it's for restaurants mostly and they have 50 lb bags of dried beans 25 lb. It is the best way to use beans to soak them overnight and make them yourself. they have anti-cancer properties that can beans don't have. Just be careful on the super high carbohydrate because remember your pancreas sees it as sugar even brown rice to try to get your Greens in there as much as you can they have a lot of protein and every other vitamin you got the right idea! the half-a-century plus vegan!🌿🌱🍃

I make my own laundry detergent and that saves a bunch. I also grow a big garden and preserve a ton of food every summer plus can meats that I get at lower prices, shelf stable and not using a freezer or refrigerator saves me. My sunvisor just broke in my car - although a piece of cardboard would work, as a friend suggested, I just can't do that - but I am handy and will buy a "pick & pull" visor and replace it for about 80% savings! That works for me. My sister works at a thrift store in our small town, and we are always AMAZED at how much stuff is donated - constantly. I don't understand how people can have so much stuff and then turn around and donate it the next day - they just seem to buy, buy, buy without any thought. I am very thankful though that they take the time to donate - still way too much going in the landfills that could be reused. When I find something I don't want, I usually just set it on the curb and there is always someone who will take it and use it. I even gave a broken legged table to a man who was going to cut it in half (only needing two legs) and mount it to the wall as an entry table! Genius.

another idea - question why you're buying any products that are significantly water - why pay for water? Can you buy it in powder/no liquid form? ex. liquid laundry detergent vs powder laundry detergent. in concentrated form then dilute at home? ex. concentrated cleaning products. If you must buy a liquid product, can you further dilute it or use less per time or put into a smaller container so it lasts longer? ex. shampoo, conditioner, liquid soap, dish washing detergent - if you can dilute 15% and still clean/wash effectively, you just saved 15%. Smaller containers may have smaller openings so you squirt out less or mentally we just use less because there isn't as much there, so buy the big refills to fill and use the little bottle for everyday use - also, children's small hands can handle a smaller bottle.

I find having more cars to be money saving. The most common reasoning I hear for people that drive around in a big payment is I really needed something reliable to get to work. I find that having 4-5 older cars that are paid for is the way to go. If one breaks we have a backup to drive. I can then take my time and get the other car repaired on my own schedule. Since I am not in a hurry I can order parts for it online about 25% or less of the cost of going to the local auto parts store. It does require that one buys some tools and is willing to learn how to work on cars, but most repairs really aren't that hard to do yourself.

Huh, I guess I'm "extremely frugal" because I do about half of these things... Rent out a bedroom, make my own bread, own a single vehicle, use the tiny last bits of every bottle, rarely turn on the window a/c, declutter and sell stuff, meal plan and try to not have any food go to waste, eat leftovers, wear clothes at least two full days (if I didn't sweat and they don't stink, why not?!). We don't have pets. Reuse trash bags by dumping the contents and not the bag, into the black bin that goes to the street. Compost kitchen scraps. We also, (off and on) go to bed when the sun goes down, so we use less electricity; use inexpensive cleaning products or stuff neighbors give me when they move or declutter; dumpster dive for furniture; schedule our computers to shut off every night automatically; we collect free computer parts and rebuild them when parts go bad. We keep kitchen appliances unplugged when not in use; plant "freecycle" seeds in my garden; minimize the amount of eventual landfill waste that enters my home. I use 1/3rd the recommended amount of dishwashing soap (and it works better!); I use half or less of recommended laundry soap; accept almost anything and everything that my friends or neighbors are getting rid of and repurpose what I can. When I was in college, I used public transportation for the steep student price of $5 a year; I wandered around campus for free pizza to save on groceries; I ate the expired food that my roommates left in the fridge; I very rarely purchased fast food.

Great tips as always. I would add that Airbnb is a great way to go. This way you don't have to rent out the room for the full month or years stay. You can block out dates on the calendar. I was an Airbnb host for four years up until this past June. It was a must for me as I wanted to stay in my home. I have since received inheritance money as my father passed some months back. I feel very blessed to have it. I also like to wear clothes several times. I figure if it looks & smells clean I am good to go. Thrift stores are great for saving on clothing & even some household items. They even have some new items from time to time. The one I go to has senior days with a 30% discount as well as 50% off each week on a different colored tag. This Thursday they are having 99 cent Tshirt day to clear out for winter. Time to sign off as I am about to head over there. Thank you for all you are sharing. Blessings, Liliane

1. Learn to do your own repairs. But within reason there are somethings best left to professionals. KZbin has how-to videos for a lot of repairs. 2. Keep your old computers running by replacing parts and using the free Linux operating system which can also be faster and does all the things Windows and OSX (Apple's operating system) do.3. Be a hermit. Friends always want to go out and make you spend your money. Imaginary friends are much cheaper. (just kidding)

I reuse aluminum. Then when it is no longer reusable, I save it until I have enough to sell in a recycling scrap yard. I reuse paper towels. First, I use them lightly, then I use them to clean up spills on the floor.

Rent Hacking! I live on social security. Since I also have a good credit score, I rent a spacious three bedroom home and rent out two of the bedrooms to roommates. We split the utilities three ways. With this tactic alone, I have slashed my utilities to one-third of what they would normally be, and I pay $0 in rent. This is still a good deal for my roommates, who are living in a great neighborhood in an attractive house for half of what it would normally cost them. I don't see this as "extreme" I think maximizing my retirement income so that I can travel to see kids and grandkids is smart and also a lot safer than living alone.

My friend is on a water meter so she brought a water butt for the garden, so every time she uses water like washing up, washing her hands etc instead of it going down the plug hole and getting charge for it she empties the collected water into the water butt and uses the water from the butt to water her flowers and veg patch, that way she doesn't get charged twice for, water is so expensive I thought it was a great idea if you have a garden.

I loved your frugal tips and do many myself. Obviously I pack a lunch every day for work and take a flask of coffee. I'm also lucky enough to be able to shower at work every day so I get in about half hour early and take my daily shower! There's quite a large built in fridge freezer in my apartment so I'm gonna find a cheap 2nd hand smaller fridge to recoup the electrical costs

I’ve seen people in line at food banks were the parents are smoking, drinking soda or Starbucks and their children are eating fast food. And they are the clients not just authorized to pickup for grandma or the neighbor. The kids need to eat, no judgement. Pets are a hard one though. It’s hard, I remember my parents gave my cat away, we couldn’t afford her. They both smoked, drank sodas, my dad whiskey & beer. Plus the budget included money for him to drink in bars and play with whores. Priorities I guess. It’s a sad thing for kids, it’s the only being that loves them unconditionally.

Use the water you save while waiting for it to warm up to pour into the washing machine. You’ll be amazed at how much water it takes to do a load. I hang out clothes. They last much longer and smell amazing, especially the sheets. I use a lot of fans in the summer and don’t use the air conditioning unless it gets over 100 here in the high desert. It stays very comfortable. I sold a nice car I inherited as it didn’t get good gas mileage and used premium gas. I’m using our old Toyota pickup. It’s a 5 speed so I coast to a stop or coast on slight hills and accelerate slowly and a tank of gas lasts twice as long as the newer car did. Saving on insurance, too.

If using cloth diapers use your washing machine and dryer. With the washing machine clothes can be soaked for as longer as you want and be out of the way. Line dried cloth diapers are stiff. Dryer dried cloth diapers are considerably softer and your baby will be much more comfortable.

Some we do. Cloth for rags (cut up old t shirts or towels) instead of paper towels. Cloth napkins. // A crazy one. I use stick deodorant and of course there's a good bit left in the holder portion. Once they're used as much as possible, I save them until I have about five or six of them, remove the holder portion from all but one. Take the intact one, zero it down until there's a large opening. Take the other holder portions with deodorant on them, put them in a microwaveable dish, nuke it until the deodorant melts off and pour the liquid into the tube. Let it cool. It's amazing how much is left.

One of the more extreme things I do to save money is butchering animals myself. Sadly we are not raising animals this year, but I find free or cheap chickens and ducks on Craigslist, I pick them up, then I butcher them. I haven't bought chicken at the store in two years. I feel like if I can get them for $5 per bird or less it's a good deal, plus I'm getting a much higher grade of meat than I could buy at the store. The canned chicken and turkey I have on the self makes throwing together dinner at the end of a busy day really quick, so it's a bit of a time saver too. Some people are horrified that I do this, but they never complain about shredded chicken sandwiches or chicken pot pies.

We use Eco laundry balls for when we do have to do bigger items at the launderette , rest of the time I hand wash , washing up liquid can last roughly three times the amount of time if you put about a teaspoon in the bottle and shake it up the best you can , never buy tooth picks anymore I use a metal sewing needle ( none sharp end of course ) have a day a week with no food once in a while and the 24hr fast gives our bodies a rest from having to digest food but drink plenty of distilled / spring water . Use family rags then rinse out instead of toilet paper etc etc

I am sure you all have heard this before but I am "old" relative to most youtubers and I will say I saved like no tomorrow but I do feel I missed out on many experience from not wanting to spend (Avoiding trips or going to dinner with friends and not going to the movies much). Depends on labeling. Some towns/cities/counties/state outlaw it. Some don’t care. The Supreme Court decided the if you put it out for the trash service to take it’s ok to take unless outlawed.
