Here's a look at a collection of Ruger #1 rifles chambered in the classic big-bore Nitro Express calibers developed early in the last century to take the world's largest game.

.500 nitro express is one beastly cartridge. That's one expensive collection of Rugers. Very nice chamberings.

How do you know? Have you ever recovered a squirrel that was hit by one of these? I didn't think so. That's probably because squirrels are too fast and are able to dodge out of the way of these massive high-energy bullets. 😂😂😈😈

Deno Keller : Sir, I have some, (big), experience with those big bores in Africa, and I shrudded when I saw the way you put your right hand grabbing the rifle.!!!!!! The index on the trigger, of course, BUT the other 3 fingers, over the lever, instead of grabbing firmly on the stock.??? I couldn't believe my eyes.!!! I cringed in advance.!!! Besides that friendly comment, loved the subject of your video. I also own several of those Rugers, in big bores. Cheers mate.!!

Avi, I really do admire your ability to handle that recoil. I max out at the .450-400 with 400-grain bullet. By the way, my information is that Jeffery introduced the .450-400 in 1902, and that it was the do-everything African cartridge for about a decade until Holland introduced the .375 in 1912.

I will take that collection off your hands because I am just one of those nice guys. ;-) God I love the Ruger No 1's . I have owned quite a few back when I was collecting Red Labels as well. Today I own one No 1 in 22-250 and 1 Ruger Red Label all weather. I miss some of the super nice No 1's I at one time owned. Who doesn't have a " I wish I still had that firearm" story. I would love to get into a Drillings or a James Purdey & Sons. All the great firearms many of us miss out on in a lifetime. I own some pretty old firearms like a Winchester 1886 , a early Sako and Steyr Mannlicher. But these are well below some of my dream rifles. And yes I am very impressed the the Ruger No 1's as well. I have seen some dang nice wood and engraved with gold inlay models. Superb rifles indeed. Thank you for providing us with this video. I enjoyed it tremendously.

Amazing. I had a #1H in .458, reloaded and shot a lot, could shoot about 10 before shoulder hurt. Got scared of highly compressed powder charge, so rechambered for .450 Dakota. Hurt so bad I could only fire 2 shots. Wanted to reload with mild loads, bever got around to it. It was super accurate.

My first 45/70 damn near broke my shoulder on 3rd shot . I can't imagine firing any of these beasts ! Now , my 2nd 45/70 , is reloaded with IMR-4227 at 24 grains . Recoil is very acceptable and manage able . 34 grains of IMR-4198 produce a recoil of 3/4 that of factory boolit recoil .

.450 Ne was not banned because of recoil, it was banned due to the fear of rebels in India and Sudan would get their hands on components for their Martini rifles in .500-450 MH . Therefor the .470, rt al came in design and use. But if rebels would have used bullets and powder in MH rifles they would have gotten a very nasty surprise. I have Ruger nr 1 in.450 too, like it very much . Perhaps most cartridge to fit easy . I have used from 350 grain upp to 500 grain in .460 Wby starter load , it is great compact combination that.
@1tufgun8 жыл бұрын
MrPh30. yes indeed ! the 450 Ne was banned mostly due to the rebels activities in India. unfortunately it was too late to correct this error in this video which was already posted & will have to be redone with further cost and lost of ratings. recoil was also a concern at that time . your insights are on Que. I love my Ruger No 1 Tropical in 458 win mag. It's a great cast bullet cartridge. I like hunting deer and elk with 500 grain cast bullets. I have to go with spine shots and it puts them down real good.
@KDD00633 жыл бұрын
can you put 45-70 bullets in the 458 win mag case? assuming you have a an appropriate bullet weight and load
@garycrandall86493 жыл бұрын
@@KDD0063 Yes you can, I do it all the time, the rifles are both the same 457 / 458 diameter, 459 if you are using cast bullets. BTW, I have since that posting three years ago, I had my gunsmith ream out my Ruger No 1 Tropical to a 458 Lott. It still shoots 458 Win Mag but now shoots the more powerful 458 Lott in addition.

The no. 1 is a nice field-rifle, my uncle loves his. .450 diameter guns/ammo weren't banned everywhere in the Empire, just in the Sudan, and parts of India where there was concern of rebel groups capturing the ammo and remanufacturing it to feed the old surplus .450 military rifles there... so the solution was to increase the bore diameter by .02" to get around the law, yet offer similar performance to the .450 nitro. Gotta love the 450/400 chambering, good all around cartridge for a lot of hunting, depending on how it's loaded.

@1tufgun3 жыл бұрын
Docsjeff. thanks for your concern however, the way to control harsh recoil effects on your body you have to move with the recoil motion as I do & apply your body weight on the front leg and move with the recoil rearwards motion without any resistance. furthermore, I seems to have natural ability to resist recoil energy. its called transfer of energy and body stance. My shoulder is quite fine. Avi

I had a No. 1 in .450 NE 3 1/4". It had the Ruger C profile, so a lighter weight barrel then the factory .458 WM and Lotts. It was too light at only 7 lbs 10 oz. I made a lead filled tube for the hole in the stock that added 11 oz and added scope and rings pretty much just for increased weight. Got it to 9.5 lbs. Since the No. 1 is so much stronger than 100 year old double rifles I got a 500 grain TSX going to 2450 fps. Which is about what a very hot Lott load would run. She was very lively in the recoil department.

What beautiful specimens! How does one obtain a Ruger #1 in such exotic calibers. I know they offer or have offered at one time the .458 Lott, 450/400NE, and .416 Rigby. I'm assuming the only way to get one in say 500NE for example would be to have a #1 tropical re-barreled?
@Sherman623 жыл бұрын
Yes, at least a couple are custom barreled. Very nice. It's too bad that No.1 production has been limited so much. They are great handling rifles.
