Good review!! I have a 30-06 no1 RSI, love the thing!! 30 years ago I had a 338win mg but sold it, made a mistake that day!! Tomorrow or Tuesday I should have my hand my new to me no1S in 9.3x62!! I read some where that you could tune in the barrel a harmonic by putting a river washer between the barrel(nut receiver) and the forehand stock (screw) and by tightening or loosing the screw you could get good results..... Have you ever heard of that ? I meant to write that as a regular comment and not a reply to the comment above sorry!
@TomRiverSimpleLiving4 жыл бұрын
@@davidgendron1953 I bet that RSI is nice! And that 9.3x62 is some serious medicine. As for the washer I've heard a lot of different things about tuning a No1 and I can't say for sure which is best or what actually works? I got lucky and didn't have to do anything to mine but mine is load sensitive though. And I've notice mine shoots it's best right around 3060 fps in 270 Win no matter what bullet I use. Anything thing over or under that velocity and the groups open up. I've only tried one powder in it just because it shoots so good with that powder at that velocity, but I am wondering if that holds true with that velocity and different powders? But I think finding that sweet spot on velocity is the key. And that was with 130gr bullets. I couldn't quite get 140gr bullets up to that velocity with that powder but as I got close to that velocity my groups started tightening up just like it did with the 130gr. I think if I could have squeezed just a few more fps out of that 140gr it would have been just as accurate as the 130gr so with mine it doesn't seem to be bullet weight sensitive just velocity sensitive? Hope that help.
@davidgendron19534 жыл бұрын
@@TomRiverSimpleLiving thank you that is great, I don’t reload yet but thinking of starting for that 9.3x62 since the no1 can take more pressure than older rifles and that ammo up here are hard to find!! The RSI is a fantastic rifle it got me a few moose over the years and is my main hunting rifle!! Just got the 9.3 today in the mail... wow a brand new rifle basically at half the price of a new one!! Mounted a Leupold 1.5-5x20 on it but I will order a NECG peep sight and fibre optic front sight(I’m really not a fan of the Ruger rear sight)! Anyway thank you for taking the time to reply!!
@peterconnan56312 ай бұрын
I really enjoy your videos and how you think about hunting and hunting rifles. However I want to challenge your statement that mounting the scope on the barrel is inferior to mounting it on the reveiver. Even though I don't yet own a No.1, but I have always wanted one, and I have 8 single-shot rifles on which the scopes mount on the barrels. I am pretty sure the baxk 4" of a barrel is stiffer than many bolt-action rifle's reveivers. At least the older which are designed to load from the top. Those two receiver walls are pretty thin!

I have a nice Ruger no 1 B also. It was factory chambered in 25 06, as new condition, and was a very good buy at $700.00, so I couldn't resist the purchase. The issue was, I have similar calibers in my collection of hunting rifles, 280 remington, 270 win, ect. I do love the No 1, and especially the balance and fit and finish of the B configuration. One medium bore Ive always wanted was the 35 Whelen, and a barrel man in my area specializes in rebores to 35 calibers in particular. I know a lot of collectors would shake their heads at altering an original somewhat collectable rifle, but the classic 35 Whelen, plus the iconic Ruger No.1 seemed like a perfect match. Long story short the barrel guy did a great job, and I'm very pleased with my new elk rifle.
@TomRiverSimpleLiving3 жыл бұрын
I'll be honest Kenneth it sort of hurts to hear you did that to a 25-06 in a #1B. But with that said, at least you made it worth it by having it rechambered to a 35 Whelen! 35 Whelen is just cool. And I can definitely see that being a much better elk cartridge than a 25-06.
@kennethsproul91073 жыл бұрын
@@TomRiverSimpleLiving Hey Tom I did ponder hard about altering the original rifle, but this was my thinking: I don't every sell guns so resale is not as important to me. I can buy another 25 06 No 1 B today in similar shape, probably with a more figured stock, but Ruger never made a No 1 B 26 inch barrel in 35 whelen, so there's that. Also I did pick up the rifle at a great price, and unlike the pre 64 model Winchester for instance, the No 1 is more about quality and uniqueness, than original collectablabilty IMHO. Also the 35 whelen cool factor, plus the No. 1 aesthetics, might equal desirable custom rifle? Either way if I left a few hundred on the table to get what I wanted, no biggie.... Good thing you haven't shoot it or you'd be boring out that white bread 270 Winchester of your's to 35 Whelen! Just Kidding

Not the Host here, but I have several. Since this is a hunting arm I full length resize all of my cartridges. If you research the development of the Ruger No. 1 you may read that they never blew up an action. Does that mean I can Max+ 10%? NO. I would never say that. But, for example, a Ruger No. 1 chambered in .45-70 can be loaded to within 80% of a .458 Winchester Magnum. It's my impression that the limiting factor for the .45-70 is not the action, but the case. Of course, Ruger did chamber No. 1's in .458 Win. Mag. My most accurate load has been H4831SC with a 130gr Nosler Accubond. It's usually around a 1/2" @ 100 yards. I'm slightly under the max charge using Nosler's load data and getting 3060 fps. But none of the loads I've tried have been bad. I don't think I've had a group worse than 1 1/2". With 4" groups I'm thinking something is going on with that rifle? I'm guessing you've checked all of the usual stuff like making sure the scope is good and rings tight? I don't know if you have checked the rib on the barrel that the rings attach to but I think its screwed to the barrel so i would check those screws. After that I would check with a gun smith to make sure the crown at the muzzle is good and that the throat in the barrel isn't worn out? But I wouldn't think a single shot in that good of shape has had much use? That's a tough one, but for any quality rifle to shoot like that something has to be going on. Please let me know if you figure out what it is and good luck with it.

I have heard the same things you have on their accuracy, and I've heard that from people I trust and I believe they know what they are doing and they just couldn't some No1's to shoot. But this one is a tack driver. It did ok, just over 1 MOA, with a couple of loads. But with 130gr Accubonds it's under 1/2 MOA every time. I bought this one used and I don't know if the original owner did anything special to it or not? I noticed he lapped the scope rings so maybe he did some type of bedding or stiffening of the hanger on it also? Or maybe it's the same as it was out of the box but it's a shooter and I didn't do anything but put a scope on it and find the right load.

I want a single shot rifle now. ruger no1 is the perfect rifle. My buddys dad gave me a ride into town this morning and he said he had 2 single shot rifles. He said they were short russian single shots and looked like a 410 but with a scope, 270 winchester and 30.06 springfield. Im going to ask if he would sell one or trade one. I really want a single shot. The ultimate hunting rifle in my eyes.

Your father-in-law had great taste in rifles! I've only carried 2 rifles this season and my #1 was one of them. It's my go to rifle any time I need a little extra range. It's on it's 45th year and only a few years as mine but it's still as good as any rifle I've ever shot and far better than most.

Hi, Happy New year. Question I just found a ruger 1 270 b 26 inch made in 1991 shot 40 times mint condition sitting for the last 29 years never hunted just at the range-. Price is 900--- should I pick it up. The blueing and stock perfect??
@TomRiverSimpleLiving4 жыл бұрын
Hi, and happy New Year to you as well! As for the rifle, I would never say if anyone should or shouldn't get one for a certain price. All I can say is that for that rifle in that condition I would get it and feel like I got it for a very good price, but that's just me. All that matter's here is what's the rifle worth to you? So long as you feel it's worth it and can afford it then you'll will always be happy with the purchase. Good Luck!

I love these rifles style, BUT, I have never, ever had one that could shoot under 1.75MOA consistently. This is over 4 different rifles I have owned. The average was closer to 2-2.5MOA. (35Whelan,22-250,243win, 3006 calibers/cartridges). I had desperately worked endlessly to find a load that shoots 1 MOA or better on all of them (I reload for many calibers and shoot ELR, so I am familiar to what it takes to produce quality ammunition). But No dice. I was very disappointed to say the least! I have spent far to much money and time to continue to try to get them to shoot at MOA. This saddens me because I like the design (with the exception of the for-end hanger). At 2MOA or better, these rifles will sufficiently serve adequately as a hunting firearm in nearly all situations. With that said, I have also owned just as many browning 1885, and B-78's, and "ALL" of them shot significantly under MOA with nearly everything I fed them. The Brownings are so easy to load for! The fore-end on the browning is by far the better design with the long length & support of the hanger. It lends itself to allow the Browning's to properly free float their rifles fore stock. Again, I really like the lines and style of the Ruger, but cannot justify owning a single shot rifle that isn't capable of MOA performance. I have heard many claims over the years that guys have vey accurate Ruger number 1's, but every single time I have watched them shoot them at the range, they do no better than 1.5+MOA. Would I buy a number 1 if it shot MOA or better? You bet! But I have to see one do it first. Good video, and nice looking rifle there sir!
@TomRiverSimpleLiving4 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your comment on this. I was a little hesitant to buy this rifle just because I wasn't quite sure how it would shoot after reading a lot about them over the years. And truthfully I was expecting it to shoot somewhere around 1.5 MOA with a good load, which I would have been happy with for hunting. But it turned out to be an absolute tack driver with 130gr Accubonds. The only other bullets I've tried were 130 gr Speer Hot Cores and 140gr Accubonds and neither shot anywhere near as good as the 130gr Accubond, but neither one of them shot bad either. Maybe I just got lucky on this one? I would really love to try a few more No1's out just to see but they are expensive rifles to get just for experimenting with so that's probably not going to happen. And that's why I really do appreciate your comment here. After working with 4 of them you definitely have got more experience on these than I do and I appreciate you sharing that experience. And I really would have expected that 22-250 and .243 to be shooters. I have a friend that has one in .243 and his will shoot 1.5 MOA groups but it will do it with absolutely any load he puts in it. It never shoots a group better or worse than that. I guess each of these No1's are unique?

Good video, but stuff happens, and that is why I want a repeater. I don't see the down side.
@TomRiverSimpleLiving3 жыл бұрын
I can't say there really is a down side to a repeater when it's all said and done, but I can say hunting with a single shot just feels different. I'm sure that's all in my head but that feeling surprised me. Actually hunting with that No1 felt like the purest form of rifle hunting. Not necessarily the purest form of hunting but the purest form of hunting with a rifle. And if my budget allowed I would be trying a lot of different No1's just to see if they all felt that way or if it's just this one? And replacing the receiver with more barrel while still have a shorter over all length is a nice bonus.

Was this a gun you were torn about buying from Jan 2020 video?
@TomRiverSimpleLiving3 жыл бұрын
No, if you saw my review of the Featherweight Super Grade in 7x57 the one I was torn about was very similar. Mine was part of a limited run. They made 500 of the Super Grade Featherweights and then they made some regular production featherweights in 7x57 with regular featherweight stocks. Apparently they had a couple of stocks left over from the run of super grades and they used those with the ebony forend and they cut and finished the rest of the stock like a standard featherweight. The one I saw had one of those left over stocks. It was serial #XXXXX503. So I know they made 3 of those. I don't know how many more they made but it couldn't have been many. So I know there are at least 3 of these and that might be all there are? And I doubt I will ever see another one but I will keep looking. That one went for a lot more than I was willing to pay.

What’s a fair price on one of these this day an time I’m looking at one at a pawnshop just curious
@TomRiverSimpleLiving3 жыл бұрын
I honestly can't say what a fair price is right now because the prices have gone through the roof over the past year? I gave a little over $600 for this one several years ago but I haven't seen anything even close to that lately. It's definitely a sellers market right now and a couple of weeks ago I thought about selling almost every firearm I own just because of what they're bringing right now. I'm just to afraid the prices aren't ever going to come back down especially with inflation set to kick in? So I have no idea. I don't even know for myself if I should wait for prices to come down before buying anything else or if I had better be buying what I want now before prices go up even more? Sorry I wasn't much help there, but I don't think anyone really knows what a good price for anything is right now?
@russellkeeling97123 жыл бұрын
They do not come cheap now. If you find one in good shape in a pawn shop in a good caliber it will probably be at least 7 or 8 hundred dollars. I bought a brand new Lipseys Ruger #1 in .35 Whelen for 1200 dollars. With a good Leupold 2.5 to 8 power scope it is now an 1800 dollar rifle. It is probably the most I will ever pay for a firearm but it was a dream for a long time.

I would bet you can reach the maximum out of that .270 with a 26 inch barrel.
@TomRiverSimpleLiving3 жыл бұрын
I can but the load that it just loves is below the max. Over 3100 fps was no problem but the sweet spot for this one is 3060fps so that's what I'm shooting but it sure does shoot that load well. And one thing I got to thinking about with this rifle is it's rare to find a rifle that shoots the max load great and I usually end up just under the max. But with the longer barrel I have a little more top end to work with so when I back off the max I'm still getting pretty velocity plus it's driving tacks. That was just something I had never really thought much about until I setup this rifle. Plus I haven't really tried any of the really slow burning powders out there now like RL26. I bet those would do really really well in this one?

nice looking rifles but there are better single shot choices out there. THe H&R Ultra will shoot better and cost somewhere around less than 1/5th the cost. The T/C Encore or G2 Contender rifles have superior barrels, superior triggers, and are a lot cheaper. there is just no question the #1 is over-rated...very few of them shoot anything like you would expect out of such a simple, strong action and high grade - without some custom work.
