A big difference between American and European salons is the way hair is washed. The shampoo basin stuck to the wall seems so uncomfortable for both stylists and clients. In Europe, the shampoo basin is away from the wall and the stylist stands behind it in a position that makes it easier to wash every part of the head. Stylists needn't contort their bodies, which must be less uncomfortable at the end of the day. They must have backaches. As a client, I'm trying to imagine someone half standing over me. Maybe not I have a choice...
@orls9068

Exactly!! And for some reason I keep thinking you'll be sniffing the stylists B.O. after a while, like WTH? I'd be very uncomfortable for someone to wash my hair like that! All the salons in wherever I went in my country - the person washing your hair is BEHIND you.

It's so weird to have started with the later seasons where Tabatha's attitude and expressions are much colder and almost aggressive, and then see these early episodes where she's smiling and you can feel her passion. Clearly in the later seasons it was a tactic to amp up the drama of the show, just like they did with Gordon Ramsey on his shows.

I’ve noticed the same level of low expectation here is at my work. And it sounds ridiculous that you have to tell adult employers to do there job but if the boss isn’t setting a standard and boundaries there are people who take advantage of it. That’s what happens at my work and sad thing is those that do the work professionally everyday, turn up on time everyday have strong passion for their job end up burnt out! And those that do what ever the hell they like get away with it year after year and after a while those good staff end up dropping their work standards because they are sick of wasting their time or leave. It’s true as a boss you need a strong work ethic and role model the expectations everyday!

Is it the case that hairdressers in the US don't get much training? It seems like they are having to figure things out for themselves which they should have been taught. Maybe it is the same everywhere and training is just insufficient. You either get taken on by a great salon which completes your education or you're left floundering? If so, that would explain all the disappointing trips to salons we have had over the years. These days all I'd let a new to me stylist do is trim and blow dry.

Do all salons work like that over there where each stylist charges different prices? I’ve never seen that before. If they set their own it would seem they normally here would just be renting the space and each working under their own ABN (Australian Business Number) and name meaning working for themselves, but these people are called employees and all have the same boss. We do have chair rental here but it isn’t exactly common and usually set aside a bit from the rest, done 7 til they can get their own salon, and they have their own business name. Often it’s more like a room at the back where they do waxing for instance and their name on the sign outside.
@Estonian4life
@Estonian4life Жыл бұрын
As I understood the employees have ranks based on experience and education like stylist, colorist, assistant, hairdresser, barber, master stylist etc. and based on that they have their prices. When you make an appointment at a salon you explain what you want to get done and you are presented with options like who is more available and what their prices are.
@kimcornelissen1529
@kimcornelissen1529 Жыл бұрын
In europe the prices can vary on the experience of the stylist which the client is made aware of upfront. Some have fixed prices for all stylists in the salon and in other salons Hair stylist rent a chair charge what they want and have to pay the owner a fee out of the money they make, they bring in their own clients and sometimes take what is called salon clients.
@Boobalopbop
@Boobalopbop Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. In NYC, I believe most salons rent out booths, and the stylist has their own clients and their own prices. Perhaps they share the wash girls, and receptionist. They’re not all like that, though. Growing up, in Brooklyn going to small salons, they have the price list posted, and you can go to your choice of stylist or go to whoever is available.

These stylist fall short in skills and training and owner hasn't even got basic people skills. I was a receptionist and assistant in a salon when I was still at school, about 15yo. And it came naturally to me. My niece (17) works as a shampoo girl on weekends and we watch these old shows regularly and she cannot believe these people's attutudes and how they are still employed. Its simple - as a receptionist or manager, be the type of person you would like to encounter when visiting a salon. Thats the start. Then come the stylist skills.

Are you from the US? I’m really interested to know, watching these shows, is are there actual qualifications that people need to have to be a stylist there. Watching as a non hairdresser, it seems like the basic skills, which I take for granted because every stylist in the UK has them, like layering properly, cross checking, foiling etc are just not there. I’m astonished when Tabatha has to tell a stylist that the hair is not even, I’ve never had a cut where the hairdresser hasn’t spent time checking. When they put the foils in, instead of doing them so quickly I’m boggled by the ability, they look like I would if I tried to do them

Tammy knows all the problems in the salon. Yet does nothing about them at all. She expects the hairdressers to run her business for her, cause she knows nothing about the business. It's not rocket science to appoint someone who is professional and skilled to manage it for her. A good owner should be able to get out of it her amount of debt, by making changes in herl attitude andbusiness practices. Although I have no idea why, someone would want to run a business that they know nothing about. She looks like a bit of a Karen now though..🤭

The color area makes me cringe. As a retired hairstylist I would not use any of those colors.

These season one episodes are a bit rough. A bit slow-paced and too much time with them cutting hair. Glad the show improved!

I wish that when Tabatha shows how to do a hair cut, she would explain what she’s doing and why so the hairdressers know what to do in the future and why they do it.
