Extreme Truck Driving In London, The Most Hostile Place To Drive A HGV In The UK

London is an extreme city to drive in any vehicle, never mind a 44-ton artic truck. in this example we do battle with busy central London traffic, avoiding busses and taxies whilst being cut up by cyclists and motorbikes with some road closures thrown into the mix, all whilst monitoring 6 mirrors, blind spots and the added pressure of meeting delivery times whilst sat in stationary traffic. But that's just getting to the delivery site, then you have the most ridiculous site entrances to negotiate, zombie pedestrians and lengthy unloading times regardless of whether your running to time or not. Then you have to do it all again on the return journey out of the city.
It might sound like I'm moaning but I actually quite enjoy the challenge with the hustle and bustle of driving in London, this video is just to make others aware of the challenges we face bringing goods into the city so shop shelves are full, building sites have their materials and essential services continue to function.

Don’t you just love it when people with no idea about driving artics , suddenly become experts in the art of giving instructions on how to reverse one into a tight entrance, don’t know how you kept your cool!! Keep calm and carry on!! Ace video again Kev, just watched for the 2nd time, keep up the good work and stay safe!

I must begin by offering my sheer admiration of how to undertook that day's work. I only drive a 3.5t van myself and sometimes I think that feel huge around London. I was amazed how you got around those congested lanes especially with cyclist just appearing from nowhere. This video should be used as a training tool to try and make car drivers and cyclist appreciate the room lorries need! But then you arrived at the delivery point. I guess the assistants weren't much help judging by the comments. I particularly liked the point where he demanded you 'straighten up'! Great effort driver - You guys deserve so much respect for what you do. Big thumbs up and keep up the fantastic work!

I did 30 yrs with a bus licence, took my class 2, class 1 and spent a year on class 2. I am now on class 1 and I have absolutely no idea whatsoever how it is even possible but I can spin a n artic with a long, ( 14.6 metre) trailer around in one go where it would have taken a 79 point turn in an 18t - I am sure it's physics but I am more convinced it's just witchcraft HAHA

Did this site 2 months ago in my 26tonner and that was when the main gate was still at the sharp left on the pedestrian crossing, you then took the next left another 90 degree down between parked cars on a 1 way street with bollards on the junction corners and high curbs heading back towards the flyover/roundabout, where they wanted it backed in, but hadn’t thought to stop anyone parking on the right hand side so you could get the swing! Also these idiot banks men/traffic marshals didn’t even put out the pedestrian barriers. FORS sites are getting worse and worse in that shit hole. @Miller the Viking trucking conquest this is exactly I am going to do my friend. As a new driver in Bradford I think I am going to struggle in terms of finding work. I am trying to find part time work on the side. I dont want to do full time driving to be honest. Even if I have to do few unpaid shift with someone I will do it to be a bot more confident. But as I said reversing seems absolute a nightmare. The sheer size of the truck bloddy scares me. Tight fucking turns. Early or late steering could fuck the whole manoeuvre. But what can we do. One has to start from somewhere. This is exactly how I felt when I started class 2 about 18 months ago. But when I started class 2 luckily I found part time work doing distant driving long runs with one or two.drops so my motorway knowledge has improved and I am not scared of them anymore. This is why I.went for my class 1. Passed second time. First time I fucked up reversing big time. I literally failed on the front cones where the reversing starts. Put fucking more money towards it and passed second time although 2 shunts taken.

Really enjoyed that. I'm an ex continental for 6/7 years. There are a few types of drivers, I was sent on a double man trip to Milan, in a sprinter van with a parcel delivery guy, when i first started. I left Bristol and drove to Riems, he woke me at Lyon. I drove to the bottom of Blanc and said he'd enjoy this bit of the drive. He stopped the other side of the tunnel in Aosta and I made him get in the back, as looking at him made me want to kill. I did Milan, the drop and drove back and stopped at the French end of Blanc. He stopped in Djon, I was in the back by now myself. I drove to Calais and he stopped at Ashbury. By now I'm livid but to tired to even argue. He asked if he could come again and I had to explain that I'd rather drive in to a wall than hear his voice once more. Silence! Parcels, I'm a 15 a day, I'm bored of getting in and out then and go to sleep. I can't be sacked, I can drive to Milan and back.

As an everyday PSV driver I quickly identified the Golden Rules of any Banksman: 1. Always to be visible to the driver. Irrespective of where the trailer is, "If you can't see my mirror" etc etc. 2. Be close to the back and on the Driver's side every time, unless you have no choice. You are much more visible there. 3. Clear, unmistakable directions about exactly where to direct the vehicle. Big hand signals, I want full arms waving, not wrists - especially after dark! Don't be hesitant, vague or unsure. 4. Tell me to Stop if you are unsure. I don't ever want to hear "WOAH WOAH WOAH!!!!!", that doesn't give me confidence you were planning ahead. 5. If it looks like I'm going over/into/uncomfortably close to a piece of street furniture I'd rather you give me the heads up than risk it on my behalf. I follow these rules every time I back anything up - a few months ago I was told by a career Driver of 40 years that I was the best Banksman he'd had in living memory, and I'll take that, not as an accolade but as confirmation that my technique is satisfactory.

The trick of driving in London is dont let other cars intimate you let them go around drivers will not want to scratch there baby and stay away from battle damage cars as they dont care about there car. And you need eyes all around your car so never block the side windows if your driving a van make sure you can see all around the mirrors and make personal notes in your head what's around you at all times that the trick. Never ever lose control of your head carm and slow breathing helps

London trucking looks to be as rough as trucking into New York City. The massive size of most American haulers is not a positive in tight urban areas I can tell you. haha One thing I love about my country is the wide-open rural highways. It's a luxury I won't lie. The US and Canada are great to truck through. I don't blame you for preferring the city over there. I've seen footage of some of those English and Welsh backroads. It's a wonder standard cars get through!

The job of a banksman is to point out where you need to end up, to tell you if you are going to hit someone/something, and to warn passersby not to stand where they can get squashed. It's an important role in keeping things safe and helping the lorry driver do his job. What that buffoon who came to work dressed as a banksman was doing, was the equivalent of the GPS saying "Right, put your left clacker on. Nice. Do that. Now, go straight left a bit. No, not like that. Left and straight! Speed up, change the radio station. Now brake and turn the A/C off. Aaagh why aren't you where I want you to be?!" You wouldn't expect your satnav to try and tell you HOW to drive, it just provides information to help you get there. A banksman should be just the same.

This right here! All I need from banksmen is to know where they want me and to make a lot of commotion if I'm going to squish something/someone.

Been into London today with an artic. Old Kentish town, was trapped between three sets of traffic lights on a corner i told the guy i couldn't get down. He insisted that I could. Needless to say I got back out with the help of four absolute gentlemen and I managed to park up to ring the garden centre. They came out to me because even they wasn't sure if I could get down to them. I managed. Crushed the side pallet box on the corner of the left turn i couldn't take. All sorts runs through your head at the time but it does happen driving an artic in London. You will hit things from time to time.

I think the guy on the ground did a great job. I love your lights. The problem going from central London to Tilbury is that you are using up all your driving time crawling along at 2mph then you have added bonus of not being allowed to park up in London at Night so it's a no-win, no-win situation but your happy attitude got you through. Sounds like a hit dog. A cup of tea and a dose of Netflix til tomorrow morning.👍

I've said pretty much the same thing about traffic 'planners'. Most of them haven't a clue about real world conditions - I've even offered to take a few out with me so they could see for themselves what it's like but couldn't get any takers . . . ;-)

Jeez Kev, if you could bottle some of that unwavering cheery disposition of yours, you'd be a millionaire! Is there not a switch in the truck to turn off those banksmen, they must think you're driving a moped with a turning circle of 2 feet! Merry Christmas to you and the family (and the rest of the Legends) and may 2020 be kind to you all - open roads, easy drops, quick reloads, unlimited hours on the tacho, no nights out, steep pay rise and lots of family time. Take care guys, stay safe!

Think your a skilled enough driver to ignore these walking talking over paid cockney health & safety traffic cones!! Haha love how not 1 of the 3 banking u in give u clear directions! Typical site in london to be fair. Tell u what we'll make a site in the buisest part of the city and the entrance tight as hell even though we need 44ft trailers in & out & to top it off well dress some turds fully in orange who cant string a sentence together & put them in charge of traffic but cant actually direct traffic.....thats why I hate london!
