Funny story: we took my wife's Corolla to the same mechanic that worked on my lude in the 90's. He looks at me for a minute then says: ".....89 Prelude?" I say yes lol. He then asks how my dad is and that he remembers cars not names lol.
@mariosintegra6 жыл бұрын
the battery light coming on when revving means the alternator is going out, NOT the battery..its a trick warning like a trick question... the clutch master cylinder rod needs to be adjusted (its a threaded rod) to the oem specs that can be found in most honda manuals to get the correct free play up top and correct engagement and disengagement points...i believe you should have around 1 inch of free play on the pedal before you actually feel clutch pressure. both are easy fixes...nice lude by the way!
@Ramcharger4 жыл бұрын
On my old 89 Prelude, it ate alternators like crazy. What was happening, is the heat from the exhaust manifold was frying them. My Dad and I created a DIY heat shield for the alternator which helped a lot.

I have a 1989 Honda Prelude S carbureted, 288,000 miles. Found the main relay (fuel pump cut off) was loose and a little cruddy. It was shorting out the ignition module often. Sanded and fitted the main relay tightly back in. New fuel filters, wires tight etc. Running like a charm. I was not the mechanic just the researcher learning from the Honda-tech board. Do you notice the coolant needs to be burped? seemed to disappear. ( no leaks) then opened the overflow and the radiator cap - burp, topoff the coolant another burp. drive 40 miles repeat the coolant burp until the coolant stays full and put.

One of the nicest cars I've ever owned. Extremely reliable too, even though mine was quite old. To my eyes, the 3rd gen Prelude was the best-looking car on the road, in its day. Unfortunately, the paper-thin body steel rusted out while the engine still had a couple of hundred miles left on it. That's the price of living in a salty, coastal environment.

my first real car was an '88 2.0Si 5spd that I later swapped the 4-wheel steering onto from a wrecked donor. We didn't have a lot of information back then so I was kind of experimenting with things as I could afford - ended up with a Chikara 4-2-1 header, Catco high-flow cat, custom crush bent 2.5" exhaust, ebay adjustable cam gears (+4 intake / -4 exhaust to try to reduce default negative overlap as much as possible), B18A intake cam (slightly more aggressive and advanced timing than any b20a5/b21a1 factory intake cam), hand-polished intake manifold, bored 60mm throttlebody, custom in-bumper cold air intake, filled all motor mounts with 80A urethane, B-series 12lb flywheel with stage 1 racing clutch, custom steel strut tower bars, urethane sway bar bushings, stainless steel braided brake lines. I had a stock ITR LSD to get installed but never got around to it, also had an Integra ECU to chip and meant to street tune but also never had time. Got a spare bottom end to build a B20A/VTEC motor but also never got to it. Miss that car but I'm just over 6'4" and had to gangsta-lean way too much. Still was a blast though.

Just straight up the B21A, is known as an oil burner, as I found out, Honda used a coating called FRM on the inside of the cylinders. They used that to reduce heat as the cylinders were close together. Turns out that FRM was so hard it wore the rings down, hence the oil burning. I bought a prelude w/a 21A that the motor was done as one of the cylinders was really scored. I planned to get a machine shop to bore it out, but 6 shops in Toronto refused as they said the FRM would damage their lathes. I ended up putting a B20 in it, and all was good. Best of luck with you Lude man, I love the 3rd Gen Prude.
@ExtremeDailyDrivers2 жыл бұрын
All true. Good machine shops can bore them. Mine was. Does it burn oil? Yep. No getting around that, but honestly almost every Honda engine from the 90s will burn some oil. Make sure to check out my newer Prelude videos to see how far the car has come!
@kduquett2 жыл бұрын
Looking forward to it because the machine shops that wouldn't take a run at the B21A. Still happy with the B20 though got no complaints. I'll check out your other vids for sure. My Prelude drives like and handles like an Audi. I guess our machine shops in Toronto suck cause they wouldn't bore that B21 out. However the B20 was a tight fit but it got bolted in fine. Excellent classic car.

Beautiful Car!!! Preludes are my fav! IM trying to find a 3rd and 4th gen Preludes to restore. I hadnt seen anyone address this in the comments so the Exhaust issue... The reason why open headers and straight pipes kill HP is because you loose the scavenging effect of the exhaust, you also have pressure waves bouncing back choking the motor...."no backpressure" isnt really a thing. It's the scavenging and backwards pressure waves (which have the same effect, but not exactly the same thing).

why did you get rid of the air conditioner?

It's custom, but you can make your own out of a piece of aluminum or you can check out ebay. I think any block off plate for a B-series will work.

Extreme Daily Drivers what I can remove safely from the engine bay to clean it up. And where do I get the Jones to block it all off. Love the videos. Just got a 89 Prelude for my daughter. And we are working on it together.
@ExtremeDailyDrivers6 жыл бұрын
Congrats on the new purchase!! You can remove the vacuum box, FIV, EGR and all the stupid little coolant lines. It makes a big difference and makes the car easier to work on. Good luck!

It's so weird. When I first went to back it out of the garage, I couldn't get it in gear. I was totally baffled. Now I'm used to it, but it's still strange. It made me think I installed the clutch incorrectly.

Where do u buy your parts
@ExtremeDailyDrivers6 жыл бұрын
Hey Noah, I do a lot of shopping on RockAuto.com. I’ll find the part there and then cross reference it through a Google search. Lots of times I can find it on Amazon or EBay for less or with free shipping. I hope that helps.

Extreme Daily Drivers thx so much I’m building a 89 lude si 5 speed that I need parts for, I’d love to see a video on how to delete power steering and ac and heat and all the engine bay stuff etc
@ExtremeDailyDrivers6 жыл бұрын
All you have to do is start removing all of the parts associated with PS, CC, AC and so on. There is nothing to it. You'll cut out a ton of weight and make the car much simpler to work on.

You need some back pressure to allow for scavenging to actually suck exhaust gases out. Without that, you get far worse performance.
