Thanks for this video. There is no repair manuals in auto stores for Scions. And there is very few Scion repair videos. So I appreciate your clarity and very helpful information. I'm now needing to do oil changes myself since the car is losing oil through the tailpipe. Every two weeks I need to add a quart of oil in the car. This neglect is not my doing. I was gifted this car which had 205k miles on it (my two other cars in the shops with major repairs). The orginal owner was a teenagee girl. Long story short, I'm on borrowed time with this car since there is transmission issues too (did a trans service and the fluid was BLACK!). I did a tune up on the car after I received it since there were no service records. Never have I ever seen such neglect to a car. And I don't believe the valve cover gasket was ever changed. It was extremely brittle, and most of the bolts snapped off, and the breather hose cracked beyond repair. So had to hunt for parts at the pick a part yard. As for doing the oil change myself, I've discovered from the last oil change that was done at an oil shop, they drained the oil, but didn't put it back in. The engine was smoking. Two different shops did that to both our vechiles. This pandemic has made auto repair shops very useless.
@ExtremeDailyDrivers2 жыл бұрын
Definitely sounds like your engine has experience very high heat due to a lack of oil. The good news is that these engine are a dime a dozen and you could probably get a good used one for around $500. It would be a pretty straight forward install, even for someone who has never done it before. While you are at it, swap in a new trans too, since yours is showing signs of damage. Good luck. They are great cars and are worth saving. Thanks for watching.
@KC-xp9of2 жыл бұрын
@@ExtremeDailyDrivers thanks for the advice. And here in CA, there is no way to find a $500 engine since they work in other Toyota vehicles. It's so interchangeable that it makes it expensive. I have a 99 Honda, which a mechanic did a sloppy job putting the engine in and couldn't do the timing right. So the end result was the rocker arm to the 3rd cylinder broke. So had to buy a used engine from Japan for $660. So for the Scion, I was told to replace the engine would cost over 3k. Same for the trans.
@ExtremeDailyDrivers2 жыл бұрын
@@KC-xp9of The engines are on eBay for $1100 shipped to your door. I bought a manual trans for my xB from eBay for $700 years ago. Do not listen to what anyone is telling you. Do the research. Don't listen to people trying to sell you something. Here in FL, these cars are everywhere and I could easily get a motor and trans from a junkyard for under $1000. Like you, I have had bad experiences with mechanics. That's when I decided to take matters into my own hands. If I can do it, you can do it.

Sometimes I forget cars normally take a gallon or less of oil. My last oil change was on my dad’s 7.3 diesel. 4 gallons lol. And yes, oil change videos and such are great. Most of the time, people watch channels that only do the craziest builds and forget that to get to that point, they started with these basics. Without these vids, anything else car related seems impossible to achieve.

Thank you for this comment! We all have to start somewhere! I can remember years ago on one of my first oil changes I used a Fram oil filter and when I removed the filter the gasket stuck to the engine. Ah the good ol’ storage unit car videos! 🤣 Pre-filling the oil filter comes down to personal preference only, especially on tiny filters like ours. It’d be a different story on big diesel filters though. I love changing the oil when it’s hot. However, get you a big pair of channel locks from HF because sometimes those other tools don’t work. Also, sometimes there’s not enough room for the screwdriver trick.
