Downhill Skater here: Hardcore is alright but LokTon or Gangster grip tape is the move for DH (lokton is my fav). SUPER SHARP. Ideally you get a really sharp knife and dont score it, cut through the bottom with the knife facing up at an angle. We like our rails sharp af. Accompanied with a torque block and a footstop, maybe a few machine screws coming through the bottom, ultimate grip set up.

In the 80s we didn't have a skate shop in my town but we had a Scow's radio shack. They sold grip tape like this. I did an acid drop off a 10 foot block wall. I landed with just my toes on board. It flipped up and took the skin off both my shins from my ankles to my knees.
@johnpopp214611 ай бұрын
We had this 25 grit per inch grip tape back in the 70s. The biggest issue was with your front foot after pushing, rotating your front foot would eat up the one sole. I would go to a big box store and load two right shoes into the box. Mismatched Chucks became my fashion contribution in high school.

My prediction: I agree with Gabe. Way less damage. The stronger grip will reduce the sliding action across the grip tape, which is what eats away at your shoes. The shoes inability to overcome the grip results in less wear on the shoe.

Can confirm the grip thumb is fatal from this. I used Vicious 30grit on a downhill deck i owned. Regular grip is ~100-180 grit and gets more grippy the lower grit count goes down. The 30 grit literally made my thumb bleed actual drops just from a quick sesh. I want people to understand this grip is literally sharp rocks, almost like glass shards. They cut into shoe rubber on shoe soles and that creates a really locked in kinda grip because it has to un-stab the rubber to lose traction

Yeah, with downhill grip, it's specially for foot placement. Your feet aren't really supposed to move much from the sweet spots where you manipulate the board to turn. Often downhill racing set-ups incorporate wedges (at the tail) and toe stops (nose) as well for additional stability. Why not just use bindings? 1. Well, you're not crashing on snow. 2. Downhill tuck and foot placement isn't the same as snowboard racing.
