I've got pictures of kids asleep at the kighchair. How often do you pull broccoli out of hair before you figure "this isn't working". It's not about the odd food here and there, it's about ALL FOODS. My so literally only ate 10 food items until he turned seven. I threw out hundreds of dollars of food every month for years....and I'm a bitch "do as I say" kind of mom. This is a medical issue not a willful child issue. My son is the sweetest, most loving, empathetic kid. Friends with everyone, teachers adore him...12 daycare nuns in four years with over 30 years experience each couldn't get him to try a single food they prepared. Same here, and I'm turning 17 this year. Before I was 2, I would eat EVERYTHING. Then I was in hospital with several nasty stomach bugs at once and ever since, I have being a pretty bad fussy eater. My main diet is breads, chicken, potatoes and sugar (which fuels me, basically). And I HATE being the way I am. I hate myself for it because I know I'm pathetic. I would love to eat everything right now, I'd even give up a limb for it, but I just can't. I get extreme anxiety when trying new foods (which is probably because when I was so young, I threw up everything). It's gotten to the point that trying new foods makes me physically sick because of the anxiety it causes me. It's an embarrassment. I can't go out on dates, hang with friends or go to peoples places for dinner. I hate school camps and anywhere that serves lunch for you. It's caused me to become sad and depressed, which sucks donkey balls. And it's worse that no one understands.

My daughter did this at age 3 and I had a WONDERFUL DOCTOR! He was a 62 year old Romanian man, and he said when she gets hungry enough she will eat . She ate only "white foods" like white bread, spaghetti no sauce, macaroni no cheese butter only, ect... I followed my pediatrician's orders, he said she will not let herself starve just make dinner tonight and put the plate in front of her and if she doesn't eat it wrap it up and put it in the fridge and continue to give her that same plate of food for breakfast lunch and dinner, give her water to drink as often as she wants and with meals. after three days if she hasn't eaten anything yet throw out that plate and make the exact same meal and continue to do this and she will eat what you put in front of her. Her survival mode will kick in. I did this starting on a Friday and two days later on Sunday she was Furious and with angry tears streaming down her face she ate EVERYTHING on her PLATE from that point on and I NEVER had this problem AGAIN! It's important to note that her father and I were not together and when she visited him she still ate "white foods" only but that's because he was like the parents in the video and allowed this behavior! And my son who was 5 years old at this time (2 years older than my daughter ) never did this.

@@lzlz21213 PLEASE DON'T. this ISNT picky eating this is a FEAR of food. It's a mental thing not a power struggle or defiance. Your kid WANTS to eat things, trust me, but they're too scared. Starving your child is not the way to go- forcing them to literally consume something they're afraid of lest they die of starvation is abuse. Yes, your child will give in, but they'll never trust you ever. They'll resent you, and you will never have a good relationship. If she eats hamburgers try hamburger helper. I know junky foods isn't great but better to eat things like that and work up her taste buds. I wasn't super spoiled but I wasn't forced to eat my food. I'm an adult picky eater, and I have been all my life (although I eat many more foods now). My parents tried to get me to eat normally. If I wouldn't eat the food they gave me, I wouldn't get to eat. I got so underweight that doctors threatened to put me on a feeding tube in the hospital. I remember being forced to eat things and throwing up at the table. I was so hungry all the time and so weak from hunger that I could barely get out of bed let alone run and play with other kids. If they only would have asked me what foods I wanted to try instead of forcing foods on me, I would have learned like I've been learning since I moved out on my own how to eat more foods and how to eat in a healthy way. I strongly considered suicide when I was 8. Things were that bad. If you have kids with problems like this, ask them what they want to try. Try to introduce a variety of new foods at meals. Try simple raw ingredients first so they can get used to them. Ask them to try things but don't force them to finish them. It'll take up to 20 times trying a new food before they may be sure whether they like it or hate it. Most of all, don't tell them they are ruined or broken for their eating problems like my mother did to me.

As a mom to an extreme picky eater I'm terrified of making my kid that depressed. I hear and read people saying that parents are the issue and they're throwing tantrums and they have us around their little fingers...right. my son's issues with food were almost from birth thanks to a very severe case of silent reflux and allergies. Then he loved his solid food...until he was 11 months old when he got sick, threw up while sleeping on his back and couldn't breath. Now we're slowly getting better but he did have to be hospitalized because of severe weightloss and growth restriction. I truly hope not pressuring him is the way to go and that it will get better. Picky eater is not the correct name for this problem. It is a sensory disorder, which makes children/adults physically ill just by looking, feeling, tasting certain "most" food. Just the thought of having to eat something that s not in my 10 yr old sons small group of items he will eat makes him nervous, panicked, nauseous. So calling these kids brats or spoiled is cruel and unnecessary. My son wants so badly to eat what his family is eating, he just can't and we are working with help from medical professionals to change this pattern. Unless you have sat at a table with your child and watched them go into a panic attack like episode, you have absolutely no right to judge or point fingers at the child or parent. Do you call a depressed person lazy or weak, I should hope not. Get your facts straight before you go off in disrespectful posts you know nothing about. And I hope that as a parent you never have to deal with this. It is heartbreaking.

Wow, such rude comments from people that have never lived with a child that suffers from this. I am a parent of a child that suffers from SED, and have tried every avenue possible to get him help. My other 3 children eat very healthy, and my now 9 year old only eats 7 things in life. It is very stressful, emotional, and exhausting watching your child suffer. Children at school are very cruel when they find out about his anxiety with food. Please do your research before commenting that it is spoiled children, and that they should be beaten. #keeplivinginignorance
@janicedjetvay-bradshaw95488 жыл бұрын
I would cry watching other kids my sons age simply eating an apple. The stress and anxiety this places on the parents is incalculable. The worry, the visits, the stupid or repetitive advice given, because you do tell everyone you meet, hoping they do in fact have a solution, or the name of a great doctor dealing with this etc...

Yes! i agree. that's like serving your child that's allergic to lactos a lactos filled grilled cheese sandwhich and then giving them a banana cream pie with whipped topping and telling them to eat it, or they get spanked. either way they are screwed because they eat it they break out & could even die, or else they could get smacked and hit for not eating!! people are so idiotic i agree! i am so sorry for your child that suffers with it and I hope it gets better

Sorry to say this but that means you failed into teaching your kid all different kind of tastes and textures at the proper age. All kids have a learning appropriate time for foods and that is usually after they complete their teething process. If you don’t take advantage of that , then good luck. It will be hard to change their diet afterwards.
@dawnsmith44738 жыл бұрын
To all those still stating that she is a spoiled child, go do some damn research. I'm almost 30 now and wish I had known about this when I was a child. I still eat in this manner, very tiny amounts and sometimes only once or twice a day. I hate so many different foods that it's actually difficult for me to make a whole "meal", and when I try to eat what doesn't taste good to me it actually makes me physically ill; with nausea and migraines that can last for up to three days. My parents tried everything to get me to eat when I was younger, even sending me to my room without food hoping that I'd be hungry enough to eat later that day or the next morning. It's gotten to the point that I have a horrible immune system, I'm sick all the time and deficient in one thing or another at almost all times. Also, this news story is slightly inaccurate and shows how even a few years ago medical information still wasn't solidified. The tongue is not made up of taste sections like many were taught in school, the whole thing tastes everything. Look it up.
@dawnsmith44738 жыл бұрын
Definitely not spoiled as I was raised in an extremely poor home and have lived on my own since I was 18. You also said the same thing I did, if I had even known this was a problem, and not my parents just thinking I didn't like the taste of things, it would have been over. As they and everyone else just thought I was picky, it was never addressed properly and never fixed.
@dawnsmith44738 жыл бұрын
That comment shows your age. If you don't have children yourself don't say "It's just parenting". You obviously have no idea what that truly entails.

@dawnsmith44738 жыл бұрын
tannenrad Sorry but that's just ridiculous. I have a problem eating food so I should go without it for even longer than I already do? Fasting will not do a damn thing, as I already eat barely a meal a day. I need more food, not less and that logic is probably what's making a lot more people sick instead of helping them get better.

I'm so sick of people judging and condemning actual issues. "Back in the day we didn't have that." You did, it was just taboo because parents would be labeled as bad parents and everyone thought any issue would be fixed simply by slapping their butts. I'm not against spanking or discipline but it doesn't solve everything especially in cases like this. People always judge picky eaters and their parents and it's so outdated and annoying. More and more science is showing that being a picky eater has very little to do with how you're brought up. Picky eaters are not brats. They have actual problems that need to be addressed. Look up things like sensory processing disorder, supertasters, ARFID and selective eating disorder. Stop being so judgemental.

A life of working hard on an empty stomach, constant headaches, excuses as to why I'm not eating, trying to act as if the smell of holiday food didn't repulse me, while others comment "what smell so good" and head straight to the kitchen to investigate. If this is your young child and this therapy works, do it. Embarrassing and teasing dont work. Dang, I never knew there were other people like me! People may hate me for this, I used to have the same phobia, I was so afraid to eat meat, veggies, most grains, most fruits, etc. up until I was like around nine to eleven. The only things I’d like were bread, chips, French fries, and crackers… I’d used to get questioned a lot when I always ate just plain crackers for lunch at school. But when I ate my first chicken nugget from… McDonald’s, my food phobia started to less worsen, I became more open to try more foods, like pizza, burgers, sandwiches, meat (which I am so thankful for), and much more stuff, I’m still very picky on veggies and fruits, but i think I can learn to overcome this, I hope for the very same for this beautiful girl!

My 4 yr old daughter is like this. She was never a big eater, but she stopped eating a variety of food when she turned 2. The only things she eats are 1 brand of milk, chocolate milk, yogurt milk; Honey Stars cereal, plain pancakes and waffles, straight yellow fries, and Skippy creamy peanut butter. We let her help prepare dishes and set the table. She loves playing with her cooking set, knows the names of many fruits and vegs, making Play-doh food, and playing restaurant. She doesn't like vitamins whether it's liquid, gummies, or chewables. Spits them out. We tried giving her chips, juice, even candy! Still nothing. She doesn't like Pediasure as she only likes 1 brand of formula. We also tried skipping meals but she still won't eat. She’s not *AFRAID* of food, she just doesn’t like it.

You call her a picky eater like it's her fault, but if you were covering someone with extreme arachnophobia or fear of heights you wouldn't be putting so much blame on the victim. PHOBIAS ARE NOT THE FAULT OF THE ONE SUFFERING THEM. There's a *reason* their very definition states that the fears are irrational -- it's not something that makes sense, and WE CANNOT CONTROL THEM. You people need to get over yourselves and realize that people with phobias need help overcoming them, NOT blame for having them in the first place.

They don't fear food. They are just use to being catered to and allowed to be picky. I tell my kids eat 3 bites of whatever food. I don't allow pickiness.

My parents taught me not to be picky from day one. My family has a thing where you don't know if you like it unless you try it. We were encouraged from infancy to try everything no matter how strange. I have very few foods I really don't like. I used to hate some foods too and grew to love them as my taste changed. I found out our taste changes every few years. So if their is something you hate now, try it again later. U might just end up liking it. ☺

Same. I make my kids take at least 3 bites. There are very few foods they don't like. I believe that picky eaters are from parents who let them.

It’s not like that though. It’s an irrational fear. There is 0 probability the kid would eat it. She is not a picky eater, she has an eating disorder. It’s the equivalent as eating poison in her brain the only way I can explain it. People rather starve than trying new foods.

I must be in trouble. She eats more items than my 8 year old. I must have one of the most extreme picky eaters in my hands 😜

Perhaps you didn’t eat enough variety while pregnant and breastfeeding. Usually child food preferences are strongly influenced by the mother. After they’re weaned shopping together, cooking together, eating together, mixing foods they don’t like with foods they do like, making mealtimes positive, and sternly encouraging them to try new things, but not forcing them or bribing them (this can create unhealthy eating habits) all are helpful tools. It’s too late to work on the pregnancy and breast feeding part, but it’s never too late to try other methods. And maybe you can share the info with other mothers to be.
