WHO WE ARE
In 2015 we quit our lives in the city to buy bare land in the country and build a timber frame home from scratch with our bare hands, debt-free, with no prior experience. It’s been a wild ride of ups, downs, highs, lows, rain and rainbows, but we haven’t lost sight of our goals and have gotten further in three years than we thought we’d get in ten. Join us as we build our house, develop our rural property, practice traditional skills such as gardening and food preservation and go to even greater heights (literally) of exploring the world through aviation as a new private pilot!

But all in all I think it makes you have a stronger relationship with one another, because we all have our own strengths and weaknesses. Great video, and it's always great to see a new one pop up.

When steam cleaning - never, never use a power washer in areas where there are a lot of wires. I'm aware of a diesel that burnt up after having the wire area power washed, because the pressure of the stream literally cut through the wire insulation.

A friend of mine was running a FBO at a small airport and a pilot came in to his office wanting help to find a replace mag coil for his airplane. My friend took one look at the old coil and sent the pilot to the International Harvester dealer and got the exact coil intended for a IH truck, it was the same coil as the plane at a third of the price.

As someone who is some what mechanically minded, I have to say you are doing a good job. There were certainly moments when i was wondering why you were doing it the hard way, but you got it done and that is the important part. I think a lot of mechanical adept individuals grew up taking things apart and learning how they work. Due to this fact we have more "working" time under our belts around the in and out of things and start to notice similarities across devices. this will come in time, and once you notice those interconnecting designs it becomes easier and more noticeable. Your working on it and that is great. Like you said, start small and grow from there.

You're so right about learning to take care of your equipment. At Christmas my car broke down and I had no clue and no money. So I googled and found what it was likely to be. Then I found how to fix it on KZbin and I did it and it works. I've decided to learn how to sevice it next rather than pay the mechanic. Feeling kinda proud.

Suggestion: Greasy equipment cleaning addon... Simple Green Degreaser is a very good biodegradable degreaser. Spray Simple Green on equipment before pressure washing it. Very dirty or greasy areas use at full strength and let soak overnight before pressure washing. Also, read Simple Green instructions first, but I believe that you'll have to use cold water to pressure wash with Simple Green. Great video, preparation is a must for good results.

Every one should try and keep their equipment in good working order and clean.I always try.I had bought a weedeater a few years ago,the whole bottom shaft tore up,I was able to find a web site that sold replacement parts for it,and now it works better then when I bought it.I was able to fix some equipment that I might have other wise had to buy again,so yeah Im proud of myself, and you all ,what you did that's awesome. One thing I have noticed in the video, you all have a lot of mullein growing on your property.

Putting sawdust on top of your beds might be ok, but digging it in could bind up your nitrogen. Leaf twig and branch tree trimmer chips as deep bedding would be better. Your master gardener course probably noted this. Best of luck on your garden. Wish I could come play.

The Case backhoe was a great choice to begin with, as you noted and the reasons you gave. As well as a plumber, I'm a union plumber or was till the union objected to my objection to being stolen from- but it gave me a bit of a "buy American" attitude; then one day I got to use a Kubota 40 hp tractor and box blade- the whole tractor is hydraulically driven- the wheels, the blade the rear accessories drive- I hated saying it, but this was the easiest thing I ever saw (as a tractor) to operate! Another operator managed to whack a fitting on one of the bucket lift cylinders; we called Kubota (in Dallas there are 3 within easy driving distance), they had the parts, and the manual we needed for the machine. Unless they have changed for the stupid side since I retired, I found it one of the easier pieces to work on. But then again, as a motor obsessed teen, I had a couple of Hondas; the translated Japanese produced manuals were hilarious, but often not very helpful! I heard you have misgivings about Craig's List, but it might be the place to go look for an enclosure for your backhoe - I know Case made one, and also AC- we had one of those in the '80s-'90s!. Also, the next time you gin up the saw mill, think about a machinery shed- it will save you a ton of work and grief in the winter/rainy weather!

That slope behind the house and garden... all your stuff is at the bottom of a sort of amphitheater, on the flat bit. That means that all the water that rains on the hill, is funneled towards you, and while flowing, it washes down the little soil that clings to the slope. I see you got tons of rocks... Would it be an idea to arrange lines of loose rocks on the contours of the hill, so that water slows down and not eroding the hill?

Steam cleaning is one of those jobs - when you start you don't want to quit, you start looking for more things to clean. You say you do not have mechanical skills, you are learning the same way any apprentice does, fault trace, find the problem, fix it, you'll surprise yourself what you'll pick up.

I completely agree with you, i am a self learning DIY'er, and i can't believe how far I have come. Looking back now, it is the same advice you are saying, just start small, and try it. I am now changing my lawnmower blades myself, doing basic electrical outlets, painting, i even now have done some basic plumbing (faucets) etc. Video's like yours are very inspiring and give me the positive attitude to give it a try. At worst i can always call in a professional. Don't get me wrong, i do know my limits, but from a few years ago never picking up a drill, to now trying to do everything myself is very satisfying. Every time i think, oh man that seems difficult, i look up some video's, do some research and usually i give a go. Nothing more satisfying than taking on a task, learning from it, and getting it done yourself.

great job Jesse!! Your epilogue was spot on. We live in a "disposable" society that either just goes out and buys a new one, or at best hires someone to fix it. Life's "tuition" is rarely paid at a university but at the school of hard knocks. I'm 68 now, and still remember the first time I changed the oil on my straight six 63 dodge 330 (dart). Did everything right, then tightened the oil filter with the wrench... after all that's how I got it off. So after cleaning up the oil all over the student parking lot, begging a ride to buy a new filter, I now remember vividly to hand tighten the filter. Good job dude!!

Sawdust is great, but remember to do something to replenish the nitrogen that will leach out as the sawdust decomposes. I grew up on a dairy, and we used sawdust and cow manure in our garden. We could grow almost anything in our soil after 4 or 5 years. Asparagus, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Beans, Peas, Corn, Squash, Cucumbers, Radishes, Carrots, Peppers, Onions, and Turnips. In addition, we grew raspberries, blueberries, tomatoes, and grapes, as well as having various fruit trees. There is much to living that lifestyle, but don't be fooled; it is hard work. It is not always as cool as it sounds.
