I had a moment like that when I was 4! I was in kindergarten and I learned how to read the date. When I realized what it meant that it was the year 2001 my brain exploded and I became conscious. I suddenly understood that there was immense time and existence before I even existed.

The biggest reason i LOVE excurb1a is because sometimes i think about things like this and then i say "damn bro im going crazy i need to keep my shit together and focus on how to pay my rent and remember mums birthday and stuff" and then i hear him in a video saying what i was just thinking about, sometimes even word for word and the video has millions of views confirming that there are many people that think about those things, and that kinda just makes me feel good about everything for some reason.

@EyesDontCry
@EyesDontCry Жыл бұрын
@@AntonK-bd1yvwhile this may be true of alot of things, i find a little bit of a sense of wonder and satisfaction knowing you will have atleast a few unique thoughts because we live in a time that has never existed and will cease to exist very soon. Every minute is gone as soon as it happens and there are many more to go, and out of all the minutes that will ever be, we get our own little slice of it as its happening right now. I may have died in 10 years when someone may be reading this comment, or i won't have, or maybe youtube will be gone and this text will be alone with no one else to view it, and maybe no one will see it again as our solar system eventually enters a black hole or our sun explodes obliterating all trace of my existance forever, or maybe someone will see it thousands of years later somehow recovering this exact comment on this exact video, maybe they won't ever know what it says as english is a long since forgotten langauage. These thoughts go on forever, certainly not unique i hope, and yet one day someone thought of a big green man and called him shrek. There's always something new every single day of your life made up of all the same stuff there ever was and ever will be, and I'm happy knowing that all of it that will be mine is only mine and only ever will be mine even when im dead and gone i can say i existed as a totally unique thing, even if an exact copy happens of me in the far infinite future an infinite number of times, they never quite existed in the year 2005 based on this random calender someone thought up a short while ago. These moments truly are mine as i know them, i thought of hulk hogan punching barney the dinosaur and then turing around to beat me up only to give me a hand before shooting off into the sky with a beer in his hand. Maybe you conjured a similar scenario reading that just now, but it didn't have "me" in it, it had you or whoever you thought i looked like that's probably wrong, it probably had a specific beer, unbranded or branded however you thought of it, you probably imagined it happening somewhere, maybe a wrestling ring? Or one of the sets of the barney the dinosaur show? Maybe you don't know who the hell I'm talking about and came up with something totally different. Isn't that kind of cool? Anyway, I've been rambling so I'll just stop. Anyway i didn't stop even though i said i would, isn't that funny, or maybe it isn't funny and you are having no reaction at all, hell maybe you even think this is wierd, or boring and totally pointless, so I'll actually stop this time. Never mind I'm going to keep going until i actually get bored of writing this pure human nonesense, which i think i am now, flippity doo da, call me moses and shoot some fish in a barrel or my name isn't laurence fishburne with an ice bucket on his head and 2 duck legs the size of an actual ducks legs

"activating the neurons of curiosity", now that is a good way to put it, after a good few decades on this planet, with just over a decade forced to learn whatever someone else decides was important these neurons of curiosity have indeed gone dormant, but every time I stumble across something like this, be it an entire video essay or even just a few sentences I overhear in a conversation I get a slight feeling of childlike curiosity, that there is still so much to do and learn and discover, a feeling that I almost forget with the everyday monotonous life and a boring 9 to 5. If only we would instill this sense of curiosity into the next generations instead of beating it out of them so they fit within the standardized tests parameters, I cannot even begin to imagine what humanity could be.

"Why do I have a mind's eye, but not a mind's nose?" I definitely have a mind's nose, ear, skin, tongue, and other sensory organs. When people talk about Beethoven being able to compose his last symphony while having been deaf, it's because he trained his mind's ear to hear those sounds. It's just a matter of training your mind to imitate such things without the sensory input. The smell of a mind's nose is less clear than actual smelling, but that's the same as my mind's eye seeing an apple in less detail than my actual eye.

Everybody has gone through this thought pattern in one way or another at one point. For years it blew me away that nobody was talking about it, but the fact of the matter is that nobody talks about it because they've already made peace with it. In one way or another most people have accepted the fact that there is so much they don't, and will never, understand. People don't like to talk about it because it's a very circular conversation that always comes back to the same conclusion- it's all either for nothing or it's so complex that we'll never understand, and that can be quite depressing.

Fun fact: while metaphysics does literally mean "after/beyond physics", it was only so named after Aristotle's treatise Metaphysics, a title that Aristotle himself never used, but which was applied to it by Medieval scholars because it literally came after Aristotle's Physics in lists of his works. Also, I think you probably know this, but yes, the set of all sets contains itself; it's the set of all non-self-contained sets that fucks everything up.

@arthuruppiano3211

@@HowtheheckarehandleswitNot to split hairs, but the question was whether the set of all sets contains itself, not whether such a set is possible. If the universal set *could* exist, it would, by definition, contain itself; it's the Russell Set that, even if assumed to exist, would by definition both contain itself and not contain itself in the same sense and at the same time. The universal set gives rise to its own paradoxes, of course. One such paradox is that it would have to have a higher cardinality than its own power set, which I think is what you are referring to as Cantor's Paradox. Another problem is that, by allowing for self-contained sets, you open the door to the Russell Set and thus Russell's Paradox.

(determinism, free will, meta physics, qualia etc) So thank you existential crisis turtle this was really inspiring.

Really, really great video. Superb writing. A perfect balance of cynicism and optimism. A sprinkle of self pity so many of us might like to drown in. I suffer from insomnia and a dull demeanor. I have been told I am rather cold and insufferable in my dialog when face to face. I, like much of my fellow meat bags, am Aspergers, how blessed. What I really mean to say, this that you have managed to capture my minds thoughts into an articulate and well presented video. And I want to thank you for it. Honestly, I am very glad to know I am not the only one who delves into the why and how of is. If I had money to spare, this would be the video I would give a superthanks too. You have made me feel ever so slightly less alone.

I suffer from being thought of as a space cadet because this line of thought is going on in the background while I carry out my day, almost every waking moment. I have a pattern I recognize and everything has a place in the universe... is this the microcosm or the macrocosm, are we moving through space or is space moving through us? Aspergers, hooray. I'm the version of it that remains a daydreaming kid trying to tie my shoes while my subconscious insists eventually I'll understand it all. My sympathies.

Ultimately pointless, but strangely uplifting .. the fact that we are able to ponder these things at all.

I had binge watched this video when it first came out, and I barely remembered any of it, but when I saw "pumpkin potion cat snake" i clearly remember that I watched the video. The video didn't make much of an impact the first time I watched it, because I devoured it like content instead of watching for meaning, but on this rewatch it was exactly what I needed to hear today. Even though I was the "same" person when I first watched the video, it hit differently on this rewatch, so is it really the same person watching this video?? There's a couple of your videos I rewatch constantly "Oh Hello You're alive", "Meaning is a j̶u̶m̶p̶e̶r̶ sweater you knit yourself.", "You will never do anything remarkable" to name a few. Each time I watch those videos they hit differently depending on what's going on in my life. Maybe I'm the same person that watches each time, or some of my old brain cells watch mixed in with some of my new brain cells. Either way this time I'll make sure to remember pumpkin potion cat snake.

The funny thing is that every consequence that my channel will have in me and in other people will be always indirectly related to you. I don't know if that causes you anxiety or a warm feeling, but I feel grateful that we could collide in this moment in time to transmite our ideas and thank you for sharing yours. That part at 7:25 about memories of memories hit unexpectedly hard, strangely enough because that specific ferris wheel in the background holds some really special and important memories for me. You see, there's this big street carnival in my home town every year and this ferris wheel, the Bellevue, has been at that carnival for almost as long as I have, since the mid '90ies. Anyway, in my family it is tradition to go to that carnival together each of the 5 or so days it's there every year, everyone even takes time off for it. Some of my fondest memories are of that carnival. In recent years though, the group of people going there with me has gotten smaller and smaller. My grandparents, my uncle, they are gone now, and even I am a different person from back then. I used to love that carnival for all the ice cream I got to eat and all the fun rides I got to go on, but as time inevitably marches on, what I enjoy most is to treasure every bit of the fleeting "now" I still get to spend with my loved ones there. Eventually they will all be gone, most of them probably before me, but their memory, the memories we shared on and around that ferris wheel, will be a part of the pattern that is me until I'm eventually gone, too.

amazing as always, you never surprise me with that. i have way more of a spiritual look on life, but when I open my ears i hear you using metaphysics to come to the same beautiful ultimate conclusion that i come to using my own completely unrelated, les science based thought process. To me it’s about seeing the absurdity and beauty in all of it, and seeing the sort of meta beauty in that as well, something you can articulate like none other. thanks for sharing the amazing art!

The way Excurb1a feeds my obsession over physics and philosophy just enough to make me do research on it while having clinical depression is such an insane yet interesting thing. A fuel for poetry, for philosophy, and DAMNIT a fuel for introverted nerds like me to find a kinship with people who wonder about the what-ifs of the world that deserve answering but will never be answered. Look I know what he did was unforgivable but you need to let people be happy and enjoy something that is giving them joy and that is helping them. Sure people can do bad things but at the end of the day (most) of them try to change and not have their entire public life based on that thing! Do you like knowing that every second a person dies and is born and do you like seeing the animals you eat die and get processed? life is... a thing too short or long to hate and press that hate on other people based on one persons past. He has tried to not have his past pinned as the Exurb1a and now he is still making wonderful videos that have not only helped me but other people through dark spaces. @@Malconeous
