My elderly father had this surgery done when a nevus on the back of his eye that they were keeping track of eventually turned cancerous. He had the surgery done to put in the radiation plaque and then removed it about a week later. That was 2 years ago and the cancer spot has shrunk and continues to shrink. A PET scan showed no metastasis elsewhere although a test that was done showed it was the type of cancer that had a chance of metastasizing. The Doctors and staff at Retina Specialists in Tampa Florida are fantastic and really care for their patients. Thank you Dr. Ivan Suñer and Dr. Marc Peden.

How is his vision after the surgery? Hope he's OK.

@@rosemarypark6093 Sorry for the late reply. But there was a slight worsening of the blurry vision he already had for a couple of months after the surgery. They told him that it could be expected before surgery. But it seemed to have gotten better shortly after. He already had shadows in his vision before the surgery because it was the same eye he had to have injections and laser treatments in because of swelling in his retina previously. They call it a “stroke” in the retina although it’s wasn’t really a stroke. Pardon me but I forget the exact term for it. Dad is 91 now and has had no further problems with the eye and no signs of cancer anywhere and it has been near,y 3 years since the surgery. Without this newer cancer treatment, in the past the only option was losing the eye.

I know this can be very scary! But I will tell you. I got this diagnosis 34 years ago. Found a great retina vitreous surgeon. He trained under and even greater specialist out of LSU. Together (and over a year and a half) they were able to band my sclera to preserve my retina, then they removed the melanoma. At the time I was told I was lucky because it was a very aggressive form. As this was a very new surgery, they predicted I'd be able to have my eye for 10 years. But I still have my eye, have fairly good vision with glasses. Just missing far right peripheral vision. No chemo. No radiation. Take it one day at a time. Be persistent to find a doctor that listens to you and is well versed on what is available (the 1rst one I spoke to said "No problem at all, we'll just enucliate you!" Umm, no thank you. I kept looking and have been blessed with vision all these years...AND my life with no mets. Best of luck!

Can we keep the eye after removal

Now I understand that eye removal is a useful treatment for eye cancer but the sheer thought of having your eyeball removed due makes my skin crawl it makes me uncomfortable. I get this phobia from my mum, whenever we have fish mezze while holidaying in Kefalonia (pre-pandemic) the fish eyes would freak her out.
