I'm actually in the same situation right now, mo toddler let him out of the cage and I found him hrs later below mi dusty sofa, now both his eyes are shut and he seams in pain very fast breathing.. it's heartbreaking, I was told to use boiled sterilised water, ofc let it cook of and then add bit of salt and clean his eyes, but what concern me is that he doesn't eat or drink, he he's very young less that 4 month.

I just want to thank you for this video! My hammys eyes were terrible! I think he poked it with a toy that he had chewed down! I was so scared and sad for him and didn't know what to do! His eyelid on one side was so swollen and big and there was crusty goo that would seal it shut when he slept! When it started I was just wiping it with a damp cotton ball and it would clean it and open it back up but it continued to swell. Then the other eye started doing the same thing! I searched his symptoms and found your video! I already was following you and knew you would know what to do! I started treating him with the saline water last night and this morning both his eyes were extremely better! They weren't sealed shut when he woke up and the swelling had gone down tremendously! I am so thankful for your help! I would have taken him to a vet if I needed but this has saved me the money and is easy to do! I am going to continue treating his eyes for a week or until I am confident he is healed and change the bedding just to make sure it wasn't caused by that. You are a god send! Thanks again!

just tried this with my hamster! he bit me multiple times but once I got my mom to help, she was able to wipe his eye while I scruffed him. he really hated it, but I’m hoping it’ll help! will definitely go to the vet if needed though. thanks Erin!

He seems to be annoyed, too, as he keeps scrubbing it. His vet will be open only on Monday, so until then, I'll try your solution.

A huge thank you! I was so scared for my hamster Petunia...he was running around his cage manically, climbing on the walls. His eye was glued shut with yellow pus. One treatment with the saline solution and he was able to open his eye and calm down.whew! So grateful to have stumbled upon your vid

and i think it was her new bedding, i went to my local pet store and i usually use white carefresh but they ran out due to everyone overbuying for quarantine and i had to use the gray carefresh. It did seem more dusty than the regular one i use

Thank you for the tip. My new hamster came home 2 weeks ago and his eye started to swell tremendously last 2 days that they went shut. I gave him the warm saline wipe and it opened slightly. I will continue the cleaning and hope his condition will heal.

I went to the vet for my poor little thing. Baytril + antiinflammatories have done nothing, and his eye is so much worse just over 1 week later, I'm absolutely devastated, I'm using this video as a very last resort :( it's not even weeping or crusty, it's just so, so swollen.

When my friend got home from school he went to see his hamster and he saw that hamsters eyes are out of his body i mean they were so bad infected. We went to vet and they said the eyes get bacteria and the eyes are dead! Vet give him 5 types of antibiotic! After 5 days the hamster died! My friend was crushed!

I took my hamster to the vet and he said to put eye drops on the eye. It's thankfully helped and our vet said to not worry about it because my hamster has been quite healthy.

Ok, this comment is for all of you who say "I don't have any money for a vet" or " I cannot go to a vet because its a little far." You don't have a choice. You have to go to the vet if needed! As ErinsHamsters posted " it is illegal to not go the vet if needed" YOU HAVE TO GO TO THE VET!!!!!! I'm not trying to be rude,but you need to go to the vet if needed for the safety of your pet! It's good to point out that runny eyes are also a pneumonia symptom and should be looked after asap, specially if it has dry or wet rheum.

I know this is late but my hamster is 2 years old, and when he was a year of age, he started getting this. He is still alive and the vet told us it is normal?? I’m quite sure it is from dust but I can’t find any dust-free bedding. Carefresh and Crittertrail make it worse, and Kaytee clean and cozy is our bets option but still very dusty. So do you know any less dusty bedding?

I found my hamster one morning with its eyes bulging out and with several lumps on its head, eyes went darker and she couldn't close them. She was fine a couple of days before. Called the vet immediately, however, they couldn't see us until the afternoon and by then she had a stroke. The vet said she must have fallen inside the cage or hurt herself and that's what caused it. I am still unsure if there was something else underlying? I'll probably never find out. Rip Siri :'(

Thinking of moving away the former wood house. 1 of my hamsters eye turned red and i instantly got it to the vet, he told us to wait and after a couple of months it will be healed. The infection spread to its other eye and i later learned that 1 eye was blinded and the 2nd one is also almost fully blinded

I might do that video in the future if I have the chance to but you have to get money prepare for emergency vet trips, not having money is not an option and its actually illegal to not seek a vets help if any animal under your care is sick or injured. Your hamster could fall ill or get injured at any point, any day of the year, at any point in the day or night and you will have to rush it to the vets when that happens. You have no choice but to save money back for vet visits that is a legal part of being a pet owner.

I had a hamster named Oreo and after 3 years he started getting crusty eyes which caused them to close shut, I cleaned them with a wipe so they opened back up (only temporarily then closing) after that he started getting slower and skinnier then his bone felt like it was in the wrong place. Then I knew he was sick and dying so he was suffering. I knew I had to put him down and I cried for awhile. It was really hard because he was my best friend. I still love him and miss him but I know he's in a better place. 🐹 🐹

I bought a hamster with eyes that were glued together (with conjunctivitis), the seller told me to just clean it up with this solution. Later i asked them for how long the hamster had that for, and they said 20 days! How did they not change the treatment if that didn't work for 20 days? I have no money at all for a vet and i'm very worried about my baby. I'm cleaning the eyes every day with a similar solution and applying bacitracin zinc ointiment on the eyelid (he hates me for that) if it doesn't heal in a week, idk what to do. (Btw i'm not talking negatively about the solution she teaches, since i know it's helping out many hamsters out there)
