Yes, sir it is! Nobody ever talks about the top thumb either, to many high handicappers leave the top thumb pointed down the shaft, instead of rolling it over more on top of your right-hand pointer finger (for a right-hand golfer). It kills some power IMO.

Howdy Alex, I am a 20+ handicapper, shoot left and sliced the ball most times. Watched a you tube video, which I now forget which one, but the grip explained on that video stopped my slice right away. In that lesson, they said that when you set your club ready, look down and you should be able to see two knuckles on the upper hand. I tried it and wow, worked every time. I believe with that top hand position, you lower hand grip will fall in place as you describe... Great videos, keepem' coming.

You must have read my mind! I was thinking about this issue on the course last week. Now I have a definitive answer! Thank you Alex. These are really appreciated!

I thought I had a neutral grip but I just realized that I was destroying it by forcing my right pinky (I'm right-handed) between the first two fingers of my left hand. This then moved my right hand into a much stronger position under the club and causing lots of nasty hooks and blocked shots. Now I make sure my right hand stays square, which means my right pinky must ride on top of the first finger of my left hand. It's amazing what a difference such a small change can make but the club does feel more secure and easier to control and I'm not having to fight it to keep it square, or struggle to keep my right arm from taking over the downswing.
@jamesrobbins2611 ай бұрын
You just confirmed what I was trying to do today. I usually have a strong grip, especially with my driver and I decided today to leave the left hand strong but just rotate my right hand slightly more to the right like you showed with the line on the thumb. And surprisingly I hit more controlled shots in the direction I wanted to. Thanks for discussing the right hand grip because very few instructors do.
@TeddyCavachon Жыл бұрын
Good “back to basics” tip. The reason that grip orientation is ideal relates to the range of rotation of the ulna and radius bones in the forearms. The best symmetrical action in the backswing and downswing occurs when both forearms start near the middle of the range of rotation as illustrated here because the strength of the wrists control when their range of extension will max out and force the elbow of the same arm to fold, which guides the club head path.

This saved me. I am a pretty avg golfer, try to break 89. But all of a sudden developed this awful pushy slice. Started shooting in the 100s and couldn't figure it out. Almost sold everything and called it quits. I found this video randomly when looking for some advice on a lesson i got about my grip. This instantly got me back and even shot my personal best of 85. Thank you.

Good tip Alex !! Recently found that swinging with the "feeling" that your lead hand is just "along for the ride" and having the trail hand more present helps prevents slices, or could even create hooks. (Kind of like a hockey slapshot) Gained 15-20 yards just using more of my trail hand pushing rather than having the lead hand pull the club. (If that makes sense) 🙌🏼
@ricker9632 жыл бұрын

I discovered exactly the same thing! The feeling I have is that the right hand catches up with the left and then passes it. It's not a flip (I think/hope). I am not scooping the ball high into the air.. At some stage in the downswing the left wrist has to bend back so that there is a fulcrum effect that swivels the grip. What I mean is that before impact the bottom of the grip points to the right and the top (above the hands) to the left, but after the swivel happens the bottom has turned towards the target and the top is pointing right. In addition, I have to keep the lead arm super soft (but still straight) to prevent it from dominating the action.
@KDR_Golf2 жыл бұрын
@Stefan Coetzee at some point, you have to "flip" or "turnover" the clubhead to complete the follow through. Or the golf swing will look and feel really awkward and you won't "complete" the swing and rather end it at hip height instead. You're right ✅️

I tinkered around with my grip forever. I have found that you need to also address wrist position here at the top of the backswing to get the full picture. I play with a natural bowing vs cupped wrists at the top. If you bow your wrists at the top that cancel out the weak grip. I have found more power from bowed wrists weaker/neutral grip combo than anything else. Just throwing it out there for someone else to to give it a shot.

Glad you covered this as I've adjusted my grip slightly to draw or create a fade. I'm a lefty playing right handed. Early season I was hooking my Driver badly with a weak grip, so I was really messed up as my swing path was very inside out and hands are active. I changed to neutral grip and got my backswing more feeling straight back and by Fall was hitting the Driver straight and sometimes with slight draw. Question: I get my Driver going straight, but then when I use 3 wood I get nasty hook. Is that because 3 wood is shorter club? Help on why that happens would be great.

Though obvious, it occurred to me that the relationship between club length & stance width are key. I may be using too wide a stance as clubs may be too small for me. Before I go for a fitting, what is the optimal stance width. Don’t tell me it’s individual, though it may be. I must be a stance width that optimizes balance, power and control. Thanks, John

I read "ben hogan's five lessons". In it he says that in setup, your trail hands palm should face directly to the target. This was honestly really uncomfortable and caused me to drastically slice the ball.. i tweaked the angle of my hand till i found a position that worked for me. Coincidentally, the ideal position was exactly where this video says it is. Number one biggest cure to my slice. This needs to be talked about more
@jareroken9127 Жыл бұрын
I've also read 5 lessons, Hogan gripped it pretty weak based on the pictures. It makes sense that he wanted to eliminate a hook from his game and make it nearly impossible but I think for most golfers I know that left thumb facing almost straight down the grip would be a killer.

What I’ve done is figured out what position do my hands naturally want to be in when the clubhead strikes the ball, and then just grip it that way with a squared up clubface at setup so that the clubhead comes through exactly that way too on the downswing. Everyone is going to be a little different just based on their body and natural swing mechanics. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Just do what works and what is comfortable. What is good for one person might not be good for another.

why is it that your arms increase separation in the takeaway. then reduce separation towards the top of your backswing; and, continue to reduce separation in the start of your downswing. might be worth doing a video on that.

Alex! I’ve messaged you many times with results from your tips and you’re amazing. First part of this last year I had some of my most consistent low rounds and all of a sudden I couldn’t hit anything straight. Another channel had similar advice to this video and another regarding placement of the ball. My game had gotten so unpredictable that I lost all confidence and we know how that goes. What I have noticed for me is 90% of the time, it’s something as “small” as my grip! I am a 10 handicap with multiple sub 80 rounds but multiple above 90 as well. Frustrating! After some grip tweaking, I noticed my “terrible” swings still kept me in bounds even if I missed the good part of the face…..and now winter is coming. Smh Keep doing what you do! I would love to spend a week over there having you look over my game. I swear I’d go to a 5 in no time!

I see a lot of kids on the range with their right hand in an ultra-strong position (sometimes with their thumb pushing the club). It feels good to them. And they get bad advice from their buddies. They want to hit 300-yard drives. So they wail on the ball with that grip. They don't want to hear about it either. So they are doomed to hit bad shots for years and years.
