I’ve used Adam Scott’s gripping technique for a while. It’s interesting that I believe that you’re the first person/instructor to give as detailed explanation of his grip for ordinary golfers. I have yet to hear if anyone has ever asked him how he came about to using this technique and why he adopted it.

I recently picked up golf. I modified my grip to be this one because my wrist was hurting, and I thought about how people use pistols. The idea behind pistol shooting is to hold it in that fold to create a full straight line through the site. Similar I wanted to create a full straight line through the club making it an extension of my arm rather than a weird obtuse angle coming off of my wrist. I've noticed less grip slip after a shot, preventing rotation and more power to my shots. I like applying body mechanics to golf that I've learned from other things like shooting for the way I hold, and skateboarding to help me understand swing mechanics more. Golf is a lot of fun. I'm trying to learn how to create the shot shapes now and improve my driving skills.

I did not get a chance to go to the range, but played a round today and hit 10/13 fairways (2 missed by driving through the fairway) and 4/5 par 3 greens. If you know my game, this is unheard of! Unfortunately, i tried in the fairway and didnt have as much success, but that is probably due to other reasons.

I always had trouble slicing because of my grip. Just could never get it right. I was at the range a month ago hitting balls everywhere but where I wanted to them to. I remembered seeing this video, used this method and the very next shot went dead straight. And it has consistently worked since. It takes the thought out the grip and it's just automatic. Seriously, try it.

The position left thumb is so important. I had a “fake strong grip” with thumb more on top and palm more on top so it appeared to be a strong grip. This caused club to open and resulted in embarrassing extreme blocks. Did not hit one block since I’ve made sure the left thumb is on the right side of grip. Great video keep up good work!

Different explanations help different people. The premise of the grip position is all relatively the same though. I actually think this one is more practical in terms of explaining than the "line up parallel to the inside of your fingers but don't grip with your palm" style. This one at least sounds like it's more designed by practical feel and natural wrist angles for people who are all different. :)

well, yes. a player should always hold the club with their left hand; and, look at the ball, as they step up to the ball. it sets the head and the hands in position; and, pressure on the ground with the right foot sets the hip back and gets the hip turning. it may, also, help to position the left hand in a high position, as you place your right hand on the grip. this enables the right elbow to position itself below the left elbow, at address. and, crucially, the left hand should be in a high enough position to make the necessary downwards rotation of the hand, in the waggle, that hogan advises in five lessons. he, also, tells us that the backswing is just simply an extension of the waggle. so, it therefore follows that the takeaway has an added dimension to it. the area around the extensor digiti minimi tendon, in the left hand, makes the downwards rotation of the hand; and, this creates the arc of the club. the club is then returned to the ball by pressing in with the wrist joint. the heel pad of the hand etc. resists against the wrist joint and the two react against one another. in the waggle, the digiti minimi and flexor retinaculum work as antagonistic opposites. that may sound like unnecessary terminology; but, it is important to remember that the digiti minimi and the flexor retinaculum are connected. when the heel pad and the wrist joint react against one another, as the club is returned to the ball, in the waggle, it adds an extra dimension: both the digiti minimi and the flexor retinaculum become fully activated. in the takeaway the area around the extensor digiti minimi presses forwards, creating the arc; and, the wrist joint supplements this by pushing back. the area around the digiti minimi is fully extended when the club is max left, towards the top of the backswing. the wrist joint completes the backswing by pushing back. and, of course, there is no danger of the heel pad pressing too far forwards in the takeaway. when the flexor retinaculum is fully activated the area around the extensor digiti minimi can't press too far forwards in the takeaway. the biggest problem is that it is quite difficult for a lot of golfers to position their hands in a high enough position to create downwards rotation with the left hand in, waggle. but, there is a simple little trick that a player can keep up their sleeve to enable the hands to be set in a high enough position. just simply use the weight of the club to press the handle against the heel pad of the left hand.

OK... a question. I am 72, recently retired, taking up golf again having not played in 10+ years, not that I ever played well. Videoing my swing I see that I get an adequate trailing hip turn in backswing. Going forward my hip turn stops at address position as club contacts ball, then starts turning again after ball leaves club face. While practice swinging I get a full smooth hip rotation through entire sequence. I even have belt buckle at 45 degrees to target at contact, if there was a ball there, but when actually hitting a ball, the belt buckle is straight at the ball and stopped. What can I do?
