I guess I have air in the system somehow. I drove the car for several hours at a time (just got it a week ago, 2008 Prius) but never with heat on. I actually had A/C running most of the time. I think when I set my temperature yesterday it might have been set higher than outside, so I guess water got directed to the heater core. After 5 minutes I got a check engine light (P1150) and shortly after the red triangle & temp warning. I noticed the coolant reservoir being full prior to that but didn't think anything bad about it because it stayed at 190F and didn't throw any failure codes. Is it likely that my issue is somewhere between engine and radiator on the heater core cycle? Maybe the core or pump itself? I just hope it's not the head gasket...

2008 Prius hybrid has multiple water pumps. I learned first hand after dealership botched the replacement of the synergy drive system’s water pump, that it is very important to properly bleed the cooling and heating systems. Computer monitoring systems more sensitive than older cars. If you have intermittent Triangle, Check engine, and thermostat indicators check the reservoir. If it is empty with no leakage, odds are you have air trapped in the system.
@Lukie2131 Жыл бұрын
That's odd because my reservoir is empty I started hearing the gurgling sound on the passenger side around or glove box and I just Don't know what to do! The car wasn't overheating it's a 2006 Toyota Prius. The guy I bought it from told me the dealer put in a new water pump not that long ago. I'm starting to get frustrated. How do I bleed the system?
@scpanther85 Жыл бұрын
There is a whole lot more to this story concerning the dealer service department but long story short. The Prius apparently has a traditional water pump on the engine and multiple pumps for the synergy drive inverter. I basically had an air lock in the inverter coolant system that would intermittently trip the warning (triangle) light and the coolant caution indicator on the touch screen (especially when going up an incline). I attempted to fill the reservoir but it kept disappearing with no leakage. I ended up taking it to another mechanic (Toyota specialist)to run diagnostics since I knew next to nothing about hybrids. He was able to see the work done on the car by the dealer and checked out the cooling system and determined they did not do a proper bleed of the system. He filled and properly bled the radiator, performed diagnostics and reset all lights.😢 Since then I found this video. Maybe this link will help. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3e3m2d9qtJ5mMksi=oqFShbvZOd4k0zjQ

Hello, my Prius V 2013 with 190,000 miles having the same issue. Overheat light comes on and goes off intermittently, after changing the Thermostat . I am pretty sure sir is not in the system because I got radiator coolant got flushed at the dealer, after replacing the thermostat. Could it be bad coolant temperature sensor ? ( I read a comment from very experienced technician that coolant temp sensor can misread the temperature and send wrong signal to the system ,after undergoing overheat problem ). I really appreciate your reply. Also ,will it be very expensive repair if I ignore this overheat sign and keep driving. It's coming only after 20 minutes of highway driving. I subscribed

It's quite peculiar that it sounds like you righteously solved the air in coolant circuit with too much pressure problem there causing the overflow tank to not suck back in. And yet alls you solved is finding the very slow RPM pump and replaced it with a faster spinning RPM one. I saw your other Auxiliary Pump test video with the slow spinning RPM but did you ever even solve the coolant tank high pressure and not sucking back in issue. Explanation is in a black hole can someone get it out.

Take all the suspect(related) parts and test them independently. If they don't do what they're supposed to... it's likely that you found it. Due diligence, some won't operate at all outside their "home", some will lie if they aren't, so, make it seem as though it actually is in it's "home"

I think I'm having a similar problem. The sound my car would make after turning it off, I think is when it puts water into that storage tank, it doesn't sound normal anymore almost like it is struggling. Well, when I am on the freeway at 65mph or so, I get a red triangle "problem detected" and after it does it a few times I get the same thing and the icon on the screen indicating overheating somewhere. I wasn't sure if this was the engine or for the battery pack but it was charging the battery and discharging. Driving on the streets the car works fine, or at least it doesn't report an issue. What would be your guess?

Bad water pump would usually have a temperature icon warning because engine is overheated. @@DanielHernandez-gu7yo The drawback of Prius Gen II is that you cannot use OBDII to read the fault or error code. good video. But WHY, WHY, WHY?! would you replace parts that aren't bad??? A new radiator? coolant control valve? etc, etc. Thats an expensive and time consuming way to fix the problem
@EyeOnAiman5 жыл бұрын
Not sure how to answer the question, but perhaps I can try answering the questions with questions and answers. Why should we replace the brake pads before they the metal rubbing? So that we don't have to replace the rotor. Why do we replace the tires before they became legally bald? To prevent flat tires & possibly avoid accidents & injuries. The new radiator was free. The old one can be used as a back up in the case the aftermarket failed. The control valve? The car is 375,000 miles, eventually that pump will also gives in, why not do it at the same time as the other pumps?
@JM-nh8yp5 жыл бұрын
@@EyeOnAimanI understand the brake pad and tire analogies.. I hope that you realize that these are normal wear items from FRICTION, which is totally different. Of course you need to replace the normal maintenance items on a vehicle. That's in the owners manual. But the radiator and coolant components are totally different. I have no problem with the fact that those were replaced. Its your decision. But if I took my car to a mechanic and they just started replacing parts for no reason, I would be upset. Its not the professional way to do automotive work. In some cases, it does happen though.
@MrBobbyw1214 жыл бұрын
Yeah it sucks but sometimes a DIY mechanic has very limited testing equipment so they must "TRY" to make an educated decision and throw the most likely part at it. While an actual mechanic can take a part off and bench test it.. it all comes down to availability, price, And ability to check items.. but you already know this; you are just playing CAPT hindsight.

A couple of things The prius is tricky even with use a Vacuum filler due to the fact that unique 3 position coolent valve position will isolate parts of the system from your bleed efforts depending upon what position its in ,,allways make sure the coolent recovery reserivor is kept full to the proper level otherwise the car everytime it cools will draw all the coolent out of the reserivor and then draw "air" into back into the system when it cools. this air will then get trapped in the system with no where to go Go through the system and check that all the hoses are connected to there "proper ports" I have on occasion had people put them back reversed on the coolent control valve. its hard to do but check , The Coolent control valve has been an issue historicly as it can stick in the wrong position an internaly leaking control valve will also cause Havic with by forcing coolent into its electrical connector and shorting its signals out as well as ruining the wiring harness and eventualy and ECU if it manages to force coolent back internaly allong the wiring harness into the ecu connector. pull the wiring connector on the Coolent control valve and check make sure its not doing this. Some info on these issues as well as a bleed procedure. automotivetechinfo.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Mastering-the-Toyota-Gen-2-Prius-Engine-Cooling-System.pdf
