What one can do as a preventative measure: take off the EGR-cooler, EGR-valve and intakemanifold. Clean it all out with ovencleaner until it's like new. Now that the intakemanifold is off, change the thermostat, easy to acces with the intakemanifold off, and, when you have 130 k miles or 200.000 km's on the ODO, also change the waterpump, with original Toyota/Aisin OEM parts. If done so, the chance you'll get problems with overheating or headgasket problems are much less. And change motoroil and filter regulary, with 0w 20 oil!

How do you open up temperature sensor? You say to do that but you don't show that step in video

I'd clean the EGR system. These things are notorious for clogging up, and it could save you a head gasket down the road. And I would definitely go all in on the cooler and the solenoid. Replacing the pcv valve while your there is a good idea since your opening it up anyway. It's a bit of a pain in the ass job but there is a couple really good videos on KZbin about it. That and changing my oil more frequently is the only thing that got my engine to stop sounding like that.

please help. prius 2012. random sporadic irreproducible engine overheating. typically, just a short flash of red T warning, accompanied with a splash of coolant out of the overflow tank. splash may be so big that coolant ends up on pass side doors. changed pump, thermostat, temperature sensor. appeared at the time to solve problem, then problem comes again. it was always sporadic. all this happened with NO check engine light and code. some ppl blame on clogged egr valve. took apart the intake manifold, yes, there was some dirt, but not terrible. finally, i got an innova 3130lat and autel mk808bt pro and checked the codes. now i have codes. one of them is P261C "pump B" thing. set autel to watch the temperature and the pump revolutions. short test drive. T reached 100 degC and the pump never moved. target speed was always 0 rpm. I am aware about rotor jammed, and no, my rotor was new when i installed it 4 months ago. the problem seems that the computer does not care that temperature is 100 and does not set target speed.................. what do i need: a new ecu? or reset -- reprogram the computer?

I have same issues with my Prius. I have a 2011. Changed out engine, water pump, sensor and thermostat. I have issue when I drive high speeds 70-80 mph up hill. Reservoir hot but not boiling like before. Temp red light would turn on or flash and then when I slow down it will eventually turn off. My mechanic replaced literally everything minus the radiator and the inverter coolant pump. Can anyone please help???? No codes or no check engine lights just the red light engine temperature turns on when driving high speeds up hill for long periods of time. Is the issue temp sensor on EGR pipes? My mechanic has replaced with all OEM parts. Any advice?

I have the same issue. that’s why I’m here

It is probably an EGR issue. Especially if you're at a higher mileage. This is one of the theorized reasons for head gasket failures. A large majority of the head gaskets on 3rd gen Priuses fail between the first and second cyclinder, which is also where in the intake manifold it will become clogged with Gunk the most. I would recommend cleaning your intake manifold and throttle body, as well as your EGR pipe, valve and the cooler. I recommend pressurized air for the cooler with some throttle body cleaner. It's basically a really long skinny radiator with tiny little fins that gets clogged up. But you also want to check that valve and the pipe that goes into the intake. You'll probably find oil in your manifold. This is also related to the clogging of the EGR. There's a few gaskets you need, and you might as well change the air filter while you're at it. There's also a couple of really really annoying bolts.

Check your EGR valve, pipe, EGR cooler, spark plugs and fuel injectors. The intake manifold has little ports that also get clogged by carbon build up.
