The look on Tom Cruise when Nicole finishes telling him about the fantasy she had with the naval guy is perfect. I wonder how many takes were needed.

Great video, guys. EWS is one of the few Kubrick films I only like instead of love. I hardly rewatch it anymore because the inane conspiracy theories (I don't dare to scroll down to the other comments) have spoiled much of its appeal for me. By the way, Kubrick's daughter Katherina has stated he doesn't have a cameo in the film--the bearded man in the bar just looks a bit like him.

It was reportedly Harvey Keitel who had to do all the takes of walking through the door (although I expect Cruise suffered similarly). Keitel told Kubrick "I'm outta here, you're f***ing crazy" and quit after a crazy number of takes, deeming the treatment disrespectful. Keitel never told the full story in interviews but told Gary Oldman and he related it later.

I wonder if Kubrick changed later in his career, people who worked on his later movies don't really mention that behavior or having to do a massive number of takes for simple things

OTSR time! Have a good one, Shelfers! 👊👊👊 Part 2 of The Wasteland Shelfer (part 1 in The Relic comments): The Lone Shelfer places his viewing device with OTSR playing on the passenger side of his Wasteland Buggy. The device still playing, with Gary and Iain discussing the pain and suffering of Hellraiser Judgment. The Lone Shelfer shifts his buggy into first gear and sets off as more of the desert wastes await. Now, with plenty of fuel, our Lone Shelfer thinks he can finally make it to his first pit stop, where they may have information on the fabled sanctuary he seeks. Rumour has it of a town that provides plenty of fresh drinking water and WIFI, some have even muttered the name "Shelferville". Who could have set up such an oasis in this irradiated world? We must find out, there's only so many RADS our Lone Shelfer can take....

None of what is in this movie seems to happen much in real life. It's as if you paid no attention to the professions of the characters, you think every surgeon or lawyer who works for rich people is some kind of billionaire or millionaire who loves murdering people and killing prostitutes? You think rich people who are committing crimes aren't doing more than hiring escorts to have sex with one another, or having drug fueled sex with escorts, which is all that is shown in the movie?

It is one of the most interesting Kubrick films, especially for all around the production and making of the movie, crazy stuff, and includes a lot of simbolism, even those scenes that look like nonsense or inconsequential, serve to show other aspects of perversion outside the main character guiding the audience, the way Gary and Iain each aproach the film on their own, show how perspective or expectation affect the interpretation and enjoyment, indeed was a mistake the way studio ended selling the movie and the perception the film has even after all this years

Ian is correct. Someone who is ODing on heroin is not going to be responsive. They aren't just taking a nappy poo. She would still be breathing, however it would likely be agonal breathing, very gaspy and groany sounding. Almost asthmatic. Very likely there would be vomit as well. She was waaaaaay too pretty for someone who is ODing on an opioid.

To me the whole sequence where Tom cruise goes to the sex mansion and sees all these masked people having sex is my favorite part. However l did feel disapointed when this cult did not really do anything to him because l felt like l lost some interest after they let him go And yes l know the movie was about jealousy and trust and all that but l really think the cult threat was an important aspect to the movie that just seemed to resolve rather easily at the end. That is why l decided to believe that the cult actually killed the lady and the piano player and left the mask on the pillow as way of saying " we are watching you"

Enjoyable stuff Shelfers! I enjoy this movie about once a year and its become the most mysterious Kubrick movie except maybe for "The Shining" and "2001" for me. The erotic thriller was big all since "basic instinct" I guess. great point! But back then when it came out I had not a lot of interest. I did however buy it pretty early on sale since I planned to try get "all" Kubrick movies. It is possible to "read" the movie on many levels but I really enjoy the esoteric occult reading with secret societies, sachs cult, "kompromat" of powerful politician people including connections to playground diddlery and even human sacrifices. Interesting theories include Kidmans character is already a "sachs kitten" and daughter is getting playground diddled at the end to become another "sachs kitten".

Like "let's explore the swinger-parties" They (Tom & Nicole) were married at the time this was made, and ended after, maybe because Tom's Scientology beliefs, who knows ? Did anyone, notice, that Tom has bigger soles, to his shoes, so that he could match Nicoles, hight? Tom is smaller in height than Nicole Kidman... Great review, as always guys! Thank you !! 👍

Barry Lyndon is my favourite Kubrick movie by a long mile. This is my least favourite by even further. This is a bad movie and a terrible Kubrick movie, for me. There is no way I could sit through this bore ever again, whereas I never tire of Barry Lyndon. The main problem with this one is that the "bizarre" underworld situations Cruise finds himself in are so laughably tame. Real life these days is far more bizarre, demented and twisted. Well, mine is. Which makes this movie just a bit embarrassing. Shrug. It just gave me the impression that whoever wrote this or perhaps Kubrick himself had led a very sheltered life.

You guys would understand this "pantomime" sequence much better after investigating how these networks operate. The young girl gets actually sold to the "party" and the sequence shows that she gets groomed and prepared by her own "uncle". It feels corny, but it´s a fairly dark scene. I advise you to read the book "In quest for Love" by Anneke Lukas.

The scene where the costume store owner makes the big fuss is a put on for the sake of Cruise. He knows what she is doing and was almost certainly participating himseld. If a dad really sumbled on that it would be a physical altercation and not melodramatic yelling about no decency. After Cruise visits the party his eyes are open and the underbelly of the world embraces him. Its an analogy for him being a part of it now and open to the these things he was too prudish to recognize before.

The guy on the left gets this movie. The other - does not. The scene in the costume shop is essential because IT is the one scene that's screaming to us what this movie is really about. It's about these elite communities that involve sex trafficking. The "love story" between Tom and Nicole is the true sub plot. Kubrick was trying to tell us in this movie what is really happening in the world. Hence why it's called Eyes Wide Shut. People dismiss the real story because they only see it as "conspiracy theories". In the final scene, Tom and Nicole sacrifice their daughter. That's why they need to go home and fuck, because they need a new child to replace the one they just gave away. Phenomenal film that a lot of people misunderstand

Eyes Wide Shut is an absolute masterpiece. The novella it's based on in English means dream story so that makes me wonder when watching the film just have much is real and how much is a dream? How much is taking place only in Bill's mind. I think that's up to each person to interpret. Kubrick is my all time favorite director and I think all 12,I don't count Fear And Desire as he disowned it,are masterpieces and should be watched by anyone who claims to love cinema.
