All I want is a 1975-77 voiced master volume JMP reissue and they seem to just absolutely refuse to ever do it. Also, not releasing a “modified” studio vintage and classic as the attainable alternatives to these $4,000 ones was a massive mistake.
@K707OR3012 күн бұрын
Perfectly said as per usual. Not sure what Marshall was thinking particularly with this price tag. The obvious move for them is to create a modern successor to their nearly 20-year-old flagship JVM410 that is at a price point to compete with other high gain options. But here we are. I love Marshall as much as the next guitarist of a certain age but this was a total win for the likes of Orange, EVH, Friedman; etc.

My story is simple. Bought my 50 watt 800 in 87 for 450.00. still have it and it still crushes. Put a yellow OD on front with an EMG 60/81 combo in my 84 Explorer. Off to the races. I have used it for 100s of gigs. Never let me down. Always delivered brutal tone.

Right on. Same story here except I caved to the rack gods in '88 and traded my 2205 for a Kitty Hawk preamp and Mosvalve power amp. (Damn you Reb Beach) Have regretted selling that amp ever since! I'd probably still buy a used one and do a couple of Headfirst mods myself to it than pay $3500 for this one.

Presenting this “as an amp reviewer and not as a die hard JCM800 fan”: So much respect for that. I want to hear demos of amps that just show what they sound like, not demos of people just playing clichéd stuff that their favourite band did with one. When the new Mesa Boogie reissue came out and everyone was losing their minds because demos were not all just playing Metallica riffs, I was cheering those reviewers on for that. 👏🏻

Thank you Henning for the funny review of this classic rock amp. Back in the 80's i did those frequency shift and tight mod for my friends on afternoon after homework. Done within less than two hours of disassembly, cutting, soldering, reasseblement and test. Did This for a beer and a pizza and the joy of being helpful.. My total cost: "90 Pfennige" as we had said. So to mod an original (old) JCM800 was a manageable task for an average guy, i was back than.. Personally i always preferred less noisy amps like my Laney Ironheart IRT (adjustable Output power, adjustable tightness, every EQ pot has shift function and built in Reverb..) The better bank for my buck, but no Marshall...

It's also a bit fun to watch Henning just get into the sound and jam for a bit in the high output section. When he stops talking and just plays you know he's getting into it. OK now the downside - none of the links seem to go to this yet. Bummer. It's probably only just been announced though so...

Right now on Andertons the standard JCM 800 reissue is £1457. The new modified JCM 800 is £2699. The mods just make it sound like an overdrive is in front of it. That’s a £1242 uplift on the price to make it sound like a £100 overdrive is on. Ouch. That’s £414 per switch. … I want whatever they are smoking over there at Marshall.

The Modified 1959 sounds even better in my opinion, but the JCM also is great. Some years ago I complained, that Marshall did not offer modded Marshalls by themselves and left the field to competitors and now they really did the job! So great and also long overdue. My only disappointment as a visual designer is the lousy post-modded look, but I think, this is intentional, to make these amps look like custom modded ones. Nevertheless for me the additional switches also could have been made more elegant. Sounds, as far as I have heard them up to now, excellent and this is, what counts, Unfortunately not so cheap, but ok, a professionally made JCM or 1959 mod also is not cheap and a cheap one often does not sound good. In combination with the new MIAB Pedals (these really are comparably cheap for their great sounds!) the best releases from Marshall since years, if not decades. This is, what I had expected from Marshall all over the years, but never got. Up to now. Marshall really is back more than ever and obviously better than before, in my opinion. Now I only wait for a Modified JMP-1 preamp with some more modern, hotter DSL/JVM sounds too... ...and I also hope, that Gibson never buys Marshall... ;-)

Good review...shame world wide prices are so bad, it's just the amp head, not a great price for the package ...sadly for rich pro's & studios, i would'nt risk damaging any gear with tubes etc ,at that price i would have to look elsewhere, besides i play bass & Marshall gave up on bass amps & cabs many years ago...shame, some were good, many years ago

I don't know man. Seems to me that Marshall is living off of reissues since a long time now. The last "new" design they did was the JVM series and its like almost 20 year old now. I get the iconic status, and I acknowledge JCM 800 is the sound of rock but come on give us a 3 channel clean + classic 800 + modern high-gain, add a noisegate, external bias, more output options... that kind of stuff that other brands have been doing for quite some time. Also, 100watts in 2025 seems overkill unless you are an actual member of the 80's Rock Pantheon or something. A 50watt version or at least some built in power reduction (like the DSL has) would be appreciated. I get this amp target a very specific audience but Marshall seem to have stagnated.
@strumminronin12 күн бұрын
If they do a "studio" 25 watts version of it, and those came with 2x 1x12 cabs as a "living room stack", I could be tempted at 1399.00 British Sterling Pounds delivered. And may be £1499.00 with red, or purple tolex. Otherwise, nahhhh. Marshall need to put up a SERIOUS fight as kit amps are just as nice or nicer at that price bracket. And at that 3k mark, I would have thought the market was few and far between.
@PureRedRage11 күн бұрын
Long rant….(that EVERYONE is thinking) It took Marshall WAAAAY too long to make this and now they are left in the dust. I’d grab a Friedman JOSE or hell, just get a JCM800 or Marshall whatever and get it modded for cheaper. I don’t think Marshall has thought about metal players like they should have. The JVM was ok but it wasn’t what it could have been and there are tons of killer amps out there that are more interesting sounding. Friedman, Monomyth, Headfirst, Gower, etc…. All of these would blow this thing out of the water unless you want an 80’s sound and maybe a clean-ish tone. I just think this amp is 20-30 years late. Once the 5150 and Dual Rec came out they changed things and Marshall had a niche with older players but I can’t see anyone in their 20’s buying one of these over one of the amps I just mentioned. I’m sure studios will grab them to have as an option but that’s basically saying it’s basically like buying some compressor and that it’s just a piece of studio gear. Do better Marshall. (I just saw at NAMM that HIWATT has Mike Fortin work on one of their amps and that’s much more exciting than what Marshall has done)

I own a nice 2008 Heritage H-157 and its probably one of the best guitars I have ever player. That being said, trashing on Gibson's instruments at that degree, partially because of their tactics (?) as a business and partially because they don't want to sponsor you (?) as a business it's not cool, in my opinion. Gibson can now be some sort of corporate monster but their guitars are still being made by hard working nice people and if you try some of the 2022, 2023, 2024 models you'd be shocked on the quality. This defamation needs to be somewhat renormalized to the business practices which for some people it's ok.
@CemSaydam12 күн бұрын
Man, a general critic to you. You need to explore the extreme settings more. The story you told us about the recording with a jcm800 years ago is clear indication that you had assumptions about how to set a piece of gear and those assumptions limit you. You could have easily explored the effect of gain knob since you were in a studio and found out that that jcm800 sounds better and better as you turn up the gain, but you didn't. That's the limit I'm talking about. To be honest, the limit is still with you. Now you need to explore the extreme settings of the tonestack. A marshall ,however it sounds bright already, likes the treble and the middle knob cranked. And maybe it's a personal preference but a marshall also likes to be miced from a distance with audible room sound. Please knock down your walls.

I have a bad feeling that the big amp companies are falling into the same trap the movie industry has in that it's going to be all about sequels from now on? I mean yeah it makes sense to capitalize on the demand for classic amps instead of letting that money go somewhere else, I just hope they don't ONLY do this. Also.... $3500?? Yeah that's the price point for boutique amp makers, but it seems a bit too expensive coming from the big guys? I would think the main advantage of being one of the big guys is taking advantage of manufacturing scale to bring the prices down (especially for such a simple amp design). As a potential customer, what would sway me to get this over a boutique offering from Friedman or Bogner for the same design?

That JCM song is better than like 99% of the crap on the radio now. If you can even call it radio anymore. 😂

The mere mention of a JCM amp that doesn't start with 8 will trigger trauma and PTSD on the Marshall forum . Shows us on the dolly where the bad JCM 900 and 2000 hurt you .

Why does it sound like a vacuum cleaner when cranked? I have a stock JCM 800 and with a Boss SD-1 mine sounded way more brutal and rounded than this one with OD2 setting...

You could buy a stock 800 and have it modded to your liking and have a lot of money left in your pocket
