Our first session with DM Scotty's EZD6 system. Trying out a dungeon crawl to see if we can do it as much in-character as possible. You can find EZD6 at www.drivethrurpg.com/en/produ...

Not having access to the map meant your players couldn't 4D role play as they are reliant on the GM to describe the layout behind each door. Why not just give them the map and have the players describe what was behind the door? In game, the map could have been a relic, and you could have maintained some control over the dungeon content by having 'Orc tribe territory' or 'beware the bones' and other such directions scrawled in blood on the parchment. The map doesn't even have to be 100% correct, as long as the players feel they can populate the rooms. 2:44 Crispy said "wish I could have just given you guys the map", er yeah. As far as I can see the player led story prompts,( ie the 4D RPG bit)were limited to: Redhanded gave the quest - a Barron's son is missing (but this might have been from the session 0); 1:35 Kreech investigating the necklace - which went nowhere;1:44 Kreech asking about who made the bird door - which went nowhere (the question, not the door); 1:50 Kreech asking about the architecture - which went nowhere. As far as saying 'Dungeon Crawls are boring' that's kinda on you. Runehammer has an entire Channel on advice to spice up dudgeon crawls, and the Veins of the Earth is one of the most imaginative supplements out there. Go checkem'out. Another problem with the 4D is because you are 'making it up as you go along' I never believed the players were in any danger. For example, despite hordes of enemies no one ever seemed to be out classed or have more than moderate pressure in a fight. THIS is why people like the crunch of D&D ( I can't believe I'm defending D&D), at least you have tactical play and repercussions. Nor does such a slack rein allow for the more strategic play of 5 Torches Deep. At one point they seem to be able to magic TWO 50' ropes from thin air! I don't know EZD6, maybe this is fine. If rolling 1s is a rule meant to result in added danger then why wasn't this happening? This is the equivalent of mini-maxing your character but THROUGHOUT the game rather than just at character creation. Isn't half the fun torturing your PC so they crawl through the dudgeon on bloody stumps rather than strolling around picking up treasure? Overall the Role Playing and GMing were good (as usual), but it came across as a murder-hobo-door-kicking pastiche of a D&D game than anything 4D. Have you guys considered Broken Compass as a system? It's a fast paced, easy rule-set, with plenty of room for player led input.

I agree that it didn't work. Your criticisms strike me as accurate. The failure is on me. Oh well, it was an experiment after all and I hope to learn from it. Thanks for watching the game and taking time to share your thoughts.

Yeah. We did agree to more of a 3D during our session zero. So I personally kept to how Crispy described the areas and only co-created some rocks. I think Crispy would have been better off with a flowchart diagram instead of a map (I suggested as a solution from my gleanings as a GM from Castles & Crusades game) I think we needed perhaps about 10 more minutes to get into our skins as well. Good feedback.
