I am sorry but I forgot which video it was you discussed Joining Tracks and you mentioned the Erase separate tracks Yes or No panel. I too saw that the separate tracks were not erased. I realized that is because I working directly from the memory on my Device. When I moved the files to Basecamp's file area on my hard drive and worked (JOINED) them there, they erased the single tracks just fine.

Tim, thank you so much for clarifying so many of the mysteries of BaseCamp with this video. This is the first of your videos that I've seen. I've wrestled with BaseCamp a few times in the past, but felt that it was much too un-user-friendly to waste so much time on trying to figure it out on my own. Even trying to read Garmin's attempt at documenting their program made it even more frustrating. I very much appreciate your taking the time to explain the proper use of shaping points. Garmin's own BaseCamp manual only mentions shaping points once and it falls abysmally short of explaining what they are and how to use them. In your video, after you tweaked a route the way you wanted it (Alt + click and move), you mentioned adding more shaping points. I watched you do it, but at first didn't realize that you moved your mouse ever so slightly to make the "rubber band" visible, which is necessary for creating additional shaping points. On my first attempt, I did as you said, but not as you did. I held down the Alt key, then clicked my mouse and nothing happened. No shaping point was created. Then I went back and watched your nearly imperceptible movement of the mouse to accomplish that task. You may want to embellish that fact in another of your training videos for clarity. Something else very frustrating about Garmin's software is that it renames streets with its own naming scheme. A street with a second name of Crossing is known as Xing to Garmin. It's as if they intentionally make their products almost impossible to use until you learn their specific nuances. In this short (for BaseCamp) video of yours, you've filled in many missing gaps in my understanding of how to use this previously frustrating tool and I successfully created my first route for my GPS unit that will go the way I want it to without it having a mind of its own! It was especially helpful to learn how to get rid of those doggonned Interstate U-turns! Thank you very much!

Great video. I fumble my way through basecamp once yearly for an annual trip. Your video will make this process quicker. The way points or shaping points on the wrong side of the road (or in my case usually in a paddock next to the road) is a trap for the inexperienced. Your explanation of how to centre and check each of the points will make life way easier for me. I'm not sure if you have covered the thrill of trying to share routes with friends for use on their garmin units that have different map versions or routing preferences set differently. That's another trap for newbies. Thanks again.

I'm really grateful that you did those videos. They have been a tremendous help, even though I have used Basecamp for years, I never had the patience to really deeply immerse myself in it. Also I used it on my Apple computer and it seems to me Garmin did the Apple version with the left hand just to be able to say they have an Apple version out there. Well, it sucks so much compared to the pc version. So much so that I bought a pc for this purpose allone. Also because I don't want to bring the pricey Mac book pro on long motorcycle journeys. Tim, I found this video, goes along with my prior question.....too bad that shaping points still have to be added to a route to force designed routing. It would have been amazing that a created route would "stick" as drawn. I have practiced locally and my DriveSmart 76 seems to "stick" without adding the additional shaping points.
@EZMotoTim

Yep. Remember, there are 2 separate compute engines - one on your computer in BaseCamp™ and one in your GPS. They may not calculate the route identically. The compute engines are dumb. They rely on us and shaping points to make them smarter.

I think the difficulty stems from the fact that the developers chose to change what the left mouse button does for each icon function instead of keeping the left mouse button for dragging the map or route. Once you internalize switching among the icons BaseCamp becomes easier and you can discover its strengths. Thanks for watching.

Thank you for your videos. I have created routes using the insert route button and have found that sometimes the inserted waypoints are just a bit off from the road that I have chosen. As a final stage I zoom in really close on each waypoint to make sure that it is on exactly the intended road or intersection, and not inadvertently placed on in unintended sideroad or up a dead end. This is not a huge deal when I'm riding by myself, but I don't like that to happen when I'm leading a group, say, from Coeur d'Alene, ID to Yaak, MT. The pressure is definitely on then! Much better to take extra time when building the route on my PC!

About exporting the .gpx file to the bike - I finished your basecamp videos and didn't see anywhere a mention of how to "import" the .gpx file on the gps itself. One of my sources of confusion as I try to understand how this works is what do I have to do once I have finished the 'send to device' FROM basecamp and then I turn on the Garmin gps. How to import? And what? Route? Track? Log? Thanks.
@EZMotoTim
@EZMotoTim 2 жыл бұрын
You can export routes, tracks and waypoints. What you export is up to you. When you start up your GPS it should tell you it found new data and ask if you want to import it. You can manually import the data as well. The exact steps depend on the model of GPS, so read the manual. Once a route is on the GPS you can call it up and use it. (Again, the exact steps vary by model.) Thanks for watching.

Hi Tim, Can you help me with a screen scrolling question? When I first start creating a route I can scroll around the screen easily with the arrow keys on the keyboard. I can also zoom in and out with the plus and minus keys. However, once I click off the map to another command, etc, those functions are gone. Now I have to scroll and zoom using the compass wheel on the map which involves many single individual clicks and is much slower. Is there a way to return to the first method of scrolling and zooming? Thanks! Mike

Great video’s but BaseCamp is still a challenge ! Trying to build a simple test route using a start and end waypoint. I then try to modify the generated route by dragging the route in a westerly fashion to a specific road vs the easterly direction BC wants to go in. It calculates my intended modification, but then wants to return to its original route by doing an “out and back “ . How do I get it to reroute using this new direction ? I have also found that modifying routes leaves unintended out and backs and circular patterns ( which sometimes you can’t even see unless the zoom is really high) which turn into caos when trying to ride the rout on the bike. Thanks for your reply. I would buy your new book as well I
@EZMotoTim
@EZMotoTim 3 жыл бұрын
You may have more than one thing going on here, but let's fix the more important item and see where that leads. I suspect the loops are caused by points not being on the road or on the wrong side of a divided highway You _must_ check the location of each point in your route. Do this for every route without fail. Open the route details box. In the lower left, be sure "Center map" is checked. Click on each point in the list. BaseCamp will zoom in on the point automatically. Use the Move Point tool to put points where they belong. Remember to go back to the Hand icon (or press the H key) when you are finished aligning the points.

Hey Tim, just tried the same Test Route and made only 1 modification to the BC generated route. Clicked on a westerly direction to a specific road. BC made the modification but again sent me back to the course BC generated. I opened the route detail box as you suggested ( Center map ✅) and with a highly focused view confirmed that the point was indeed on the road. I use Mac version of BC, do you think that would make any difference ? Incidentally, The Mac version does not have a + key in the route detail box to insert new waypoints to a route. @@randyshoop3214 I don't have a Mac, so I can't answer for sure, but it seems unlikely such a basic feature isn't included. There is most likely a setting that is forcing the change. This software is fatally flawed. I have worked on learning it for over a YEAR. Every time I spend an hour creating a route, I get almost to the end and Basecamp "adds something" to my route that I can't remove. Countless times I have deleted and started over. Often it has me exiting and taking a five mile detour when there isn't even a waypoint telling it to do so. There are entire off ramps that it knows nothing about, and I have to refer back and forth to google maps to locate the offramp and then try to find it on basecamp. After going through all that minutia to have to destroy the whole thing and start over is more than discouraging. I've just about decided to put one waypoint in my GPS and let my unit pick the route, taking me God knows where. I've watched the videos, and his basecamp has different buttons than mine, although I have the latest version. If I had to describe Basecamp with one word it would be "unknowable."

I used to think that as well, but now it comes naturally to me and I've discovered the power and usefulness of the program. On this summer's travels I was able to create routes when we didn't have internet access. Thanks for watching.

@@EZMotoTim I appreciate your knowledge on the Basecamp program but I would think you might agree that Mapsource is so much easier. All of the routes I create are motorcycle street rides so perhaps that’s why I have a bias. The one issue I have with Mapsource is that it sometimes crashes when creating routes in some of the Mid Atlantic area states. MD, KY are two. Garmin stopped supporting Mapsource but it works perfect for my needs. Just the simple dedicated + and - in the toolbar for zooming makes things so much easier!

@@jniemec All the routes I create are for motorcycle street rides as well. I never got into Mapsource, so I don't have a comparison. Zooming is on the mouse wheel in BaseCamp. I'm not here to convert anyone, just make it easier for those who want to use it. Stick with what works for you.
