Hi Tim. Great videos. I have learned a lot from watching the difference techniques that you use. Here's a tip for you that I stumbled on by accident. In the video you copy waypoints to make them appear in the route. You could just click on the Waypoints Catalog folder.

@@EZMotoTim My setup is not identical to yours, but this should hopefully work for you. Your "Waypoints 3" list contains your route, but no waypoints to add to the route. Instead of clicking on Waypoint 3, select "Sample Routes". This should show you everything listed below. From Sample Routes select and open "Amarillo to Flagstaff" and then click the "+" symbol to add a waypoint. You should now see all the waypoints without having to duplicate waypoints. And if you rename a waypoint, it automatically changes in all routes where it is used. Hope this helps

Tim, your videos are incredibly helpful. A question for you. I think in this video or other one, you mentioned adding shaping points to a route after a turn to force the GPS to follow the drawn route. Does this defeat the purpose a bit? I thought that the once a custom route is created the GPS must follow the route as created (drawn)? Does Garmin's algorithm take over regardless?
@EZMotoTim

Yes. Remember, there are 2 separate compute engines - one on your computer in BaseCamp™ and one in your GPS. They may not calculate the route identically. The compute engines are dumb. They rely on us and shaping points to make them smarter.

A quick question but first thank you for your careful videos. Now my question, what happens on the road if you decide not to go through a waypoint? Does Garmin forces you to go through it?
@EZMotoTim
@EZMotoTim Жыл бұрын
My experience with 2 Garmin GPSs is they will prompt you to make a U-Turn once or twice, but one automatically continue once you are sufficiently past the waypoint. Also, you have the option to edit the route and skip the last via point. The Harley GPS forces you to skip the next waypoint if you miss it. This "feature" drives me crazy and is not safe as it requires three "clicks" to complete. The Garmin is much more intelligent. Thanks for watching.

Just watched your basecamp series and found it very helpful, in fact possibly the best and easiest guide to follow, i have a question for you, once you transfer your route over to your device be it internal memory or sd card have you found a way to organise your routes into an order ie alphabetical or new to old in my case i have a lgv700 and i cannot seem to work out how to put my favourite route at the top of my list. Cheers for the guide

I organize my rides by naming them D01-xxx, D02-xxx, D03-xxx, etc. I remove them from my GPS when I'm done with them. With just a few routes on the GPS, scrolling to find a particular route isn't an issue. Thanks for watching.

Hi Tim. Thanks for this video tutorial! Question: When splitting the route into segments, is there a particular reason you started from the end of the route and worked back to the beginning? My instinct is to start from the beginning and work forward. Any pros and cons over one way or the other?

At 3:00 you click and drag the route to "Someones House", but when you release the mouse button, the route leading to someones house changes from HWY 29 to Bermingham Ave. How do you drag the route to another road without changing the entire route? I struggle with this issue when I plan a route from point A to B and then grab and drag the route to other backroads I wish to travel on and in doing so I inadvertently change sections of the route that can be multiple turns before my current position. Note- I notice when I Grab the road it has the pencil symbol with a line from a bold black dot to another bold black dot. Are those black dots some kind of waypoint? Can I add a black dots to shorten the amount of road effected by me grabbing the route and sliding it to another road? (shortening the line) I hope my questions make sense. I have been watching your videos on Garmin base camp over and over for about a year and still have major issues using Basecamp.

I see what you describe when dragging to "Someone's House." If the route changes, as it dies in this example, continue to Alt-drag the route in as many places as you need to in order to put the route on the roads you want to go on. Thanks for watching.

BaseCamp gives us the option to put a lot of valuable information associated to a Way Point. Is there a way to see that information once we upload the route to my Garmin ZUMO XT?
@ChefGuruJeff

Great info. But what happens if you go off route during ride? Is this exportable to a Google Map. Seems very over engineered and not user friendly. But worth giving it a try. Thanks.
@EZMotoTim
@EZMotoTim Жыл бұрын
What happens when you go off-route depends on the GPS you are using. My Zumo automatically gives me instructions to get back on the route. I also have the option to edit the route and skip the next shaping/waypoint. You can export to a KML file and import to Google My Maps, but I don't recommend it. Use Google My Maps OR use BaseCamp and a GPS. You won't appreciate the "over-engineered" features until you are comfortable with it and have used it for awhile. Thanks for watching.

Hi Tim. I watched all your videos on Basecamp and read the manual from Garmin and did not find an answer to my Question. I'm planning to ride the route 66 next year and I bought the Drew Knowles book, " Route 66 adventure handbook". Drew puts GPS coordinates in the book and I did not find how to create waypoints with GPS coordinates. Can you help? Thanks

@@EZMotoTim Open your map. Then click on “FIND” it is located at the top in the tool bar. Then in the window that opens at the very bottom, click on “LOCATE COORDINATES…”. Then, in the window that opens, you put the coordinates from the book and make a waypoint in the circle that appears on the map. That's all.

Tim what if I just want to add a waypoint along the route just so if I have to detour or it recalculates it will guide me to that way point instead of the final destination. Can I change a point to a waypoint so it’s still on the road Great vids
@EZMotoTim
@EZMotoTim 3 жыл бұрын
If I understand your question correctly, you want a waypoint available so if you need to detour to it, the GPS will take you there instead of to the original destination. In BaseCamp, create the waypoint, but do not add the waypoint to your route. Export your route as you normally would. Separately export just the waypoint to your GPS. Import the waypoint to your Favorites. If you need to take the detour, then call up the waypoint and set it as your new destination.
@EZMotoTim
@EZMotoTim 3 жыл бұрын
There is no conditional (IF this happens THEN go here ELSE go to original destination) routing feature in the GPS. If you put a waypoint on a route, the GPS will guide you to it. See my first reply for a method of handling changes to your destination. Create a few routes and ride them. In time you'll see how it all works. Thanks for watching.
