No lube would have freed that up maybe if you let it soak for 19 months
@johnmelling995010 сағат бұрын
Never be beaten mate. I never doubted you would get it done. Would it be a good idea to perhaps fill those holes in the beam with a silicone sealant rather than grease? The silicone will plug up the holes from moisture and salt and wont wash away.
@Ezrider3598 сағат бұрын
I had that idea as well but if the silicone cracked and let moisture in wit wouldn't be effective plus I figured grease might be kinda self healing and wouldn't get in the way of future removal was my thinking why I went with grease vrs silicone

Welcome back... always a pleasure to see a new video posted. It's been a while, but let me guess... you've been super busy on the road? Kind of sucks when you're feeling ambitious and want to get a little maintenance accomplished only to have seized nuts/ bolts hinder your progress. I've been there plenty of times myself... cussing and swearing, but we all somehow manage. Ol' Red is still lookin' good and continues to pound the pavement! Take care EZ!!

That does seem like an especially bad design the way the holes in the casting are shaped to actually funnel and hold moisture in there. The grease idea certainly won't hurt. I was going to suggest filling the hole up with silicone but that probably won't last either. I fought the galvanic corrosion monster on my '73 KW everywhere a bolt went through a cross member or bracket so I truly feel your pain. Great stuff though, thanks for sharing.

Great video Ezra, just curious about re using the bearing cone,,my parts guy said i should put a new cone in any time i pull it apart. Just wondering your thoughts on that.
@Ezrider3595 сағат бұрын
i don't have a problem with re using them. if they get out of spec i normally just toss them and do it the old fashion way. its not a crush sleave i don't see a need to replace them every time.

Your skill are called getting the job done and doing what you think will help in the long run, smart mechanics, trying to keep equipment making money then chasing the lack of maintenance breakdowns

Bro that’s probably the physically hardest job I ever did was change a housing on that suspension. I cussed paccar all day long doing it. I cut them off the. Glowed them red over and over a finally beat them thru from the top down. Those little nylon bolt covers did 0 for anti corrosion
@Ezrider3596 сағат бұрын
that's more or less how we did it the first when i broke the u bolts time except with the beam still on the truck cut them off and drove them down with a punch and a sledge while another person was using a impact tightening the nuts to help pull them down. probably 2 hours to drive out one set of u bolts. i don't think they use any anti seize or anything from the factory. im hoping between the grease and antisize mabye there come out better in the future. i threw them nylons in the garbage. i think the biggest problem is they fill up with salt and grim and cant drain out of the bolt holes witch just corrodes them in till the corrosion swells up enough to totally seal them in. pressing them out took everything that 20 ton press had before they would pop.
@JamesPretty6 сағат бұрын
@ disgusting how hard they were to move. I almost quit a few times. I honestly couldn’t swing the hammer any more
@CA-fn1wg9 сағат бұрын
Man you made old red a nice truck and now you showed you tube how much the ag 380 suspension sucks to work on i never liked that set up personally butt i dont own it. Always prefered low air. air liners 8 bag is not the best either. Butt thats the truck tech talking still beats replaceing u bolts on a camelback😅 you also have preset hubs with the spacers between the bearings theres a torque spec for them just have to find it. I still check the free play before i put in the axle shaft seen those spacers get cushed just to warn you. Fyi fliud flim is a undercoating oil been using on my 2002 ranger for a few years keeps rhe rust down preety well and if you need it clea some degreaser and a power washer works well to take it off
@Ezrider3598 сағат бұрын
Pick your poison flex air holds a alignment better than low air leaf for the type of work I do low air leaf tends to crack axle housings at the welded on perches. And they also snap those clips. Flex air tends to stretch/snap u bolts. There is no perfect suspension 8 bag actually seems to do the best for the type of work I do but I don't like how it rides. And when I had airliner suspension on a Freightliner I owned before I started doing u tube I was constantly changing u bolts probably a set a year when they would stretch and the bags would start walking out.
@Ezrider3598 сағат бұрын
I did gloss over the wheel seal yes it has preset hub spacers but I have atleast 4 other videos probably more showing wheel seals and bearings so I didn't show much of the process other than they were done in this one so this video would be a reasonable length. Thanks for watching 👍

i take the bracket off the frame and deal with all the crap hanging, put them on jack stands and a 8lb tire hammer and out they come. they are 750.00, fronts are different than rears. same with the radius rods.

would some sort of heavy duty silicone work to fill in those gaps? would stay better than grease and remain flexible. just a thought, your mileage may vary. that design is more proof that engineers hate mechanics.
@Ezrider35912 сағат бұрын
The thought crossed my mind but if the silicone shrinks or cracks it wouldn't be helping atleast the grease should be somewhat self healing and if it can soak in around the bolt combined with the anti snease may help keep the moisture out

This model of suspension from what I see should have never made it past the drawing board…..usually requires a trip to the red Oval Office for new aluminum pieces….and u bolts lol. You won the fight though!!! Well done!…..such a piss poor design with the aluminum and steel together…too bad a guy couldn’t put a plastic sleeve in there somehow.
@Ezrider3596 сағат бұрын

They are newer bags and don't leak. I'll keep running them quick enough to change out to wait till they do leak and iv gotten some new airbags lately that have blown out literally in weeks so I'll keep running them until they do leak
