One of the most frightening experiences of my life, was when my back was turned, on the ramp of Travis AFB, and a lone F-100 close by, kicked in the afterburner. I was 10, now 73, and the memory of it won't let go. I had no choice but let the F-100, be my favorite aircraft of all time.

I heard carrier crews weren't told about the AB when they were first put aboard ship. Many of them thought there was a mishap the first time they heard one.

This F-100 has an F-102 afterburner nozzle on it. The original F-100 nozzles would get stuck closed and the afterburner wouldn't iight. When the F-102's were taken out of service the afterburner nozzles were removed and transferred to the F-100. The F-102 nozzles were a newer, more reliable design.

What a beautiful example. I remember them dotting the flightline at MacDill AFB when I was a kid. My dad would take me to work with him on Saturdays and I could look out from the walkway of the hanger down on all the action. My sub really was workin' when the pilot kicked in the afterburner. I miss that so much. We had a house in Tampa right off one of MacDill's approaches. All kinds of traffic would fly by or over, but it was the F-4's, F-102's, F-106's, F-100's, and other go-getters that had my attention. Especially when a flight would practice combat returns. Thanks for another great vid! Hope to catch you at Oshkosh!

The F-100 flew the most sorties of any US aircraft deployed to Southeast Asia. It few troops in contact missions from Da Nang to Khe Sanh and the Ia Drang valley. One even shot down a MiG-17. Bravo to D. Cutisall & his team for keeping that legacy alive and flying with this warbird!

So glad that there's a video capturing the sound of the afterburner kicking on. 2:56 for the sound. The videos on my phone didn't do it justice! It sounds unreal in person. Such a cool jet.

BOOM! Wake up everybody! My dad (now 85 years old) was in French Morocco in the late 50's with the 45th Fighter Day Squadron at Sidi Slimane Air Base. He said he would always love the F 100. He was an engine mechanic assistant/armorer.

To me, it's more majestic to see them taxi with the canopy open. I can't figure out why though. Nostalgia, connection to the outside world? Or maybe it's just cool to see a pilot go by like he's driving down PCH

This is a little bit hard to believe that this is true! I would have never imagined seeing a Hun like this in the modern day? I expected only grainy old films and bland, half hearted documentaries. It's quite unpopular to bring up, but I can't see why if there are several flyable Huns, F-4Ds, MiG-21s, that there can't be one Thud restored? The money is out there. Are all the main spars cut? Anyways, not to detract from this immaculate F-100F, and a great, noisy BANG! flight demo! Thank You!

Are those compressor stalls with a boom?
@dennythomas8887 Жыл бұрын
That bang sound is the afterburner lighting off.
@172ndairwing4 Жыл бұрын
No. The Super Sabre’s J57 engine used a “hard” afterburner. So when it came on fuel is dumped right into the exhaust, causing the “boom” you hear in the video . Modern fighter jets use a graduated afterburner system that sprays fuel in a slower process. No loud bang for the crowd, but it’s more efficient.

@johngrossenbacher6597 Жыл бұрын
It's cranked.
@172ndairwing4 Жыл бұрын
@@johngrossenbacher6597 Yes, by design. The first F-100 refueling probes were straight. But that put the probe below the cockpit canopy, so the pilot couldn’t see where the probe was when trying to refuel. By cranking it upward the probe is visible to the pilot , making the aerial refueling process easier and safer for all parties.
