Small featurette highlighting the Second Gulf of Sidra Incident, January 1989, when a pair of F-14s squared off against two Libyan MiG-23s.
This was the second time American F-14s had been challenged by Libyan aircraft in the Gulf of Sidra. The first incident happened in 1981, when F-14s shot down two Libyan Su-22s.

Guys, if you really wanna know what F 14 is capable of read and watch what you can from Iran Iraq war 1980-1988. Iran had some 60 operational F 14s and took delivery of the total of 72 one year prior to the war to intercept the intruding MIG 25s coming from Soviet. Iranians scored some 160 kills with their F14 even though they were not allowed to use the AIM 54 Phoenix unless with direct orders from the commander chief of the Airforce. They were so short on those missiles. They downed three MIG 23s with a single shot of Phoenix Jan. 7, 1981. Pilot Zandi has 11 kills with his F14. They did a lot of crazy stuff and it would be interesting for you who just love the TOM CAT, Which dominated the skies and became the Persian CAT. They still give you goose bumps.

I remember getting a F-14 model jet from my uncle A.J. as though you would know him, lol. But anyway, man I fell in love with all aircraft after I assembled that one. I would spend all my paper route money on fighter jets, glue and paint. The golden years from 8 to 15. I wanted to be a fighter pilot at one time; I never did, but I did serve 24 years of my life as a U.S. Marine. 15 years in a combat environment. I was 30 years old the first time I wore my dress blues. Just saying, videos like this hits my transmit button. But shit, I'm proud to be a Marine, pilot or not....OOOH fckin RAH !

Though I like the F-14, to me the F-15 is the true Generation 4 King of Fighters. What I want to see in Trumps second term is the New Enterprise CVN -80 have the latest fighter and I don't mean the F-35. The New Gen 6 fighters are now in R&D. They will have Laser weapons as well as stealth. Maybe this is the Space force the President talked about. If God willing the Republicans take back the House and keep the Senate in November. Then I may see Melania Trump breaking a bottle of Champagne on the New Aircraft Carrier USS ENTERPRISE. I served on the last Enterprise CVN 65 from 1982-85. I would love to see the New Enterprise CVN-80 with New Generation 6 fighters on the flight deck by 2024.

Tom Cruise + F-14 = Top Gun. Is there any way to quantify the cultural impact of this movie? Of course, all the young people it inspired in the western world, but think about the countries Mr. Tomcat was made to keep at bay... Freakin' Tom Cruise has got a big ass swing wing multi-role all weather gotcha from 120 miles away, and he's got a need! A need for speed! God bless your father in law. A entire generation thanks him. And that's just from the movie. That does not take into account the effectiveness it had in executing the missions it was designed for, keeping our country and the rest of the free world safe.

We lost one of those Tomcat's from 1981 in 1994 due to the crash of Kara "Revlon" Hultgreen. Deck strike after going around 4 times. It is lucky the RIO punched out when he did or they both would be dead. The woman should have never been at the stick on one of those birds. There is also a mock up of one of the bird's from 1989 in front of the Regan library. This plane should still be in the air. There were 55 F-14D Super Tomcats but not all 55 made it to the fleet. It was great working with them. USS Constellation CV-64 AB3. Also the F-4 that became the first air to air ace after shooting down those 3 Mig's was Showtime 100 and was itself shot down on the way back to the Connie. They got fished out of the drink but the plane was lost.

Not because of “Top Gun” but because of it just being an awesome aircraft the F-14 is my favourite United States Navy aircraft of all time, and the F-15 is likewise the USAF aircraft, you can keep your “stealth” and 5th generation aircraft, these two are “lean, mean, flying machines” and would have scared the pants of most enemy pilots. It’s such a shame to see those aircraft being shoved over the side from the USS Forrestal, even more a pity that the “accident “ happened in the first place, and it goes without saying the loss of life. RIP, Lest We Forget.

Oriskany CV34, we had a Tomcat crash 1973. Rigged up the net and we had to wait, but not for long. Eerie silence and suddenly BOOM! That jet came in so fast that if you blinked your eyes, you didn't see that jet come in. Pilot was okay but the story went around that he had to toss his under clothes. And all who were on Oriskany had to go out and pick up pieces of that jet. No more flight ops for that day, and the pilot got a quick ride home to America.

@@rogerchapa6461 Well at 68 I don't remember all of it. What I can remember is that jet wasn't a local jet for Oriskany. The year is 1973, my memory is sure of that. And season, Tolken Gulf is warm most of the year. So day/month not sure. Plus it could be what you think, I just know some of it, but there should be pictures some place. Cameras were used for reasons to protect all on Oriskany. Try to find it, Roger if you know how to. After all this time classified information should be out some place in this computer age. I got to go look at those two jets and see if it jogs my memory, if I get a positive thought, you may get my next comment.

Funny thing is, the tomcat ace of aces not american but iranian pilot. The highest-scoring pilot in the history of the F-14 Tomcat is the Iranian ace Jalil Zandi, credited with shooting down 11 Iraqi aircraft during Iran-Iraq War making him the most successful F-14 pilot. The victories include four MiG-23s, two Su-22s, two MiG-21s, and three Mirage F1s. Sadly, He died with his wife Zahra Moheb Shahedin in 2001 in a car accident near Tehran. The real top gun.

I also have a similar item at the top of my bucket list except its just to at least get to ride in any fighter jet as the RIO, jaja. The Tomcat is also my all time favorite fighter jet but unfortunately the only ones that it would be possible to fly in would be the Iranian Tomcats. However there is another option that would be the next best thing. That would be to fly the Tomcat in a simulator. Thanks to modern PC flight simulators like DCS that is now possible. I my self fly the Tomcat on occasion in DCS and it is wonderful thing to experience. I highly recommend checking it out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2LSaHhvpcdsa7s

The last time I looked, it was the F-4 Phantom II that was called "MiG killer", and before that, it was the F-8 Crusader. With two Libyan MiGs under its belt, the F-14 is the least deserving of the American combat aircraft ever called by that moniker. As of yet, no one has come up with the idea of calling the F-15 a "MiG killer", yet the latter`s Gulf War output alone should suffice to justify the epithet.

This video was made on 1989 and does not mention anything about THE REAL F-14 combat history. Iranian Tomcats flew 8 years of 24/7 CAPs during Iran-Iraq war and scored 160-200 kills. Su-22s, Mig-21s, Mig-23s, Mirage 5s, Tu-22s, about 30 Mirage F1s and on top of that the first official kill of Mig-25 (9 total). The all time F-14 ace is RIP BG Jalil Zandi with 11 kills. During operation Desert Storm, USN F-14 pilots had reported that Iraqi pilots consistently avoided engaging F-14s as soon as they detected the famous F-14 radar lock.

I launched many of these in the early 90s. Always will be my favorite. Having 14s on our Carrier made me sleep good when we were able to. The Iranians gave him the ultimate test. Russian & French fighters were no match. Sadly today’s F-18 would be no match for yesterday’s 14. Thank over educated Navy Narcissists for that. Probably the same that thought it intelligent to not upgrade Navy Vessel and Weapons. Right now a naval battle with China could be embarrassingly devastating. Today it’s who has the best missiles. Don’t build the next 2 carriers and build a bag a destroyers and a gut of fast 1000+ mile missiles then we’ll have something. Today the only bird that can beat the the Tomcat with its Phenix is the F-22. The F-18 may have a chance against our unarmed rescue chopper. Ha!! You know us, it’ll take an onslaught by someone else to piss us off and turn us to some Evil SOBs

To be sincere, from the dozen documentaries I watched on MIGs jets, it was reported that there was no jet like it or even close in terms of performances and kill ratios during its hey days, most especially, during the Vietnamese and Korean wars. Remember "MIG ally" ? Even American pilots that fought during the Vietnamese and Korean wars testified to that!

But in the Iran-Iraq war, Iranian Tomcats (despite the embargo and lack of parts and the small reserve of the Phoenix missile) became the real MiG killers. During the 8 years of war, the MiGs couldn't hunt down a single Tomcat.

The Russian heatseeking missile was an almost exact copy of the sidewinder. How can that be? Because one sidewinder stuck to the jet engine of a Mig without exploding. The pilot managed to land and the Soviets reverse engineered the Sidewinder. True story. Also the mig pilots weren't 'the best North Vietnam could put out' they were largely Soviet pilots on secret missions.

Waiting until the last minute to defend themselves? LOL. The RIO was out of control. He was told not to fire until AB give him consent! That “wait a minute” you hear is the RIO’s pilot telling him to slow down and reassess.

Tomcat was never concieved as a MiG killer. MiG 29 was an aircraft that was too small to present a serious threat to the US carrier strike groups. MiG-29 had a relatively short range and wasn't capable of carrying those huge Soviet anti ship missiles. F-14's primary mission was as an interceptor of the Soviet supersonic bomber formations, (mostly Tupolev TU-22s). MiG-31 was a heavy aircraft capable of lugging these anti ship missiles but was never used in that role. US Navy is in a dire need of a true replacement of the venerable F-14 Tomcat. Thankfully F-35Cs have finally started to arrive on our carrier decks. With these superb aircraft US Navy will get an unprecedented platform for gathering and disseminating vital intelligence and situational awareness to the rest of the fleet. From the other 4th gen fighters in the air, like F-18 Hornets and EA-18 Growlers, to other surface combatants in the region. But no matter how capable, stealthy and advanced the F-35C is, it lacks capabilities that were lost when Tomcat was retired. And these capabilities are exactly what the Navy needs today, and even more, tomorrow. And those are long range, high speed and a capability to carry a lot of extremely long range air to air missiles together with the, now in development, hypersonic air to ground/anti ship missiles. USAF has gone much further with their development of the 6th generation NGAD aircraft with a huge budget of almost 2 billion $ sided for NGAD development in 2022 military budget. Navy is way behind but the good news is that some crucial technologies will be shared between the 2 jets. There will be no joint development of the single platform for both services like with the F-35 program, but key technologies like advanced engines, radar, electronic warfare suit, etc, will be shared. This way the Navy can piggyback on USAF progress.

35:24 That "Oh Jesus" was his pilot. They weren't jiving at all. Almost at odds with each other. The pilot wasn't fully committed to engagement being the only next move. It was a clean shoot and no laws were broken but controversial inside the community at the time. Alot of people thought it was a "just because you could doesn't mean you should" situation. He lost objectivity and his ego was helping make the decision. It didn't help that he headed to the DMV to purchased new license plate/vanity plates saying "migkiller".

the irony of this is they used sidewinder missiles to do the job, one of the oldest missiles in the inventory and also (at the time) terribly unreliable due to the pilots having to wait for a growling tone before firing. so whats the Irony? The F-4 and every other fighter at the time could have done this same job with the same missle and yet this goes down in history as a great F-14 victory without it ever getting into a high maneuvering close dog fight or using the phoenix, both of which it was designed to do.

Dick Chenney has a hard on Northorp Grumman.. he wanted to kill it since 1991. In the mid 2000s being the brain of POTUS, he got his wish. The Cat was too expensive to maintain, despite being far better as a fleet defense fighter than the F 18.. also, the new role of the US Navy was to bomb jihadis in caves and inToyota pickups, not to defend the fleet.. I bet Vlad and Xi were toasting the decision, since the US Navy lost her long range bomber and cruise missile defence due to the stroke of a pen. Also, since the Persians had demostrated how good the F 14 was, and now they are enemies of the US, the US Navy has to destroy the F 14s instead of putting them in storage... good.. now the US Navy has no tool to deal with long range cruise missile attacks over the horizont.
