Imagine it's 1952, you are doing a ground support mission in the unbeatable P-51 , pushing those Nth Koreans back towards China, when all of a sudden you are jumped by an enthusiastic Russian veteran in a brand new Mig 15! Will you survive the encounter? Also.. I once had flying lessons with a bloke who was shot down in an Australian Meteor over Korea.. I believe it was a two seater on a recon mission. he was the observer as I recall. I lost 500 ft in my first turn in that 150 aerobat. Teacher was not impressed!

How about the Gulf of Sidra 2 ways… 1) F-4s instead of F-14s. 2) Mig 25s instead of Mig 23s. 3rd idea… Mirage v Drakken 4th idea… (if they have the planes) English Electric Lightning v F-106

Great Alternative history video GS! As an ex-Navy guy who was THERE in the Gulf of Sidra on the USS Forrestal, (the carriers on station in those waters that day were Forrestal and the USS Nimitz), I would have enjoyed seeing something like this go down. As it was the F-4's from the Forrestal overflew low over Tripoli, basically harassing the Libyans, and they (the Libyans) scrambled the 2 SU-22'S. As soon as our F-4's saw the hostiles launch and come up to meet them, they flew back over water toward task-force airspace and broke off, so that the F-14's from the Nimitz could engage and, well the rest was history. I was in a VAQ-Squadron (VAQ-130) that flew the EA-6B Prowler Electronic Warfare aircraft and they were overflying the whole thing with the Hi-Cap fighters high overhead. We were treated to multiple views of this engagement afterwards from cameras on the boat, as well as one of the aircraft in the engagement (I think as I remember one of the F-14's) gun camera. It was a really good day that day. Although the *Real* General Quarters we were at was pretty unnerving, it ended up being uneventful at the level of the boats. The only actual real General Quarters I was ever in on my years on multiple Carriers, and the closest I ever got to actual real action during my time in the Navy. Good Video - Thanks for this GS!!

I really love when you re-create historical missions, and I'm happy you put a twist on this one. Would love more of the same with other proven missions... the outcome doesnt need to be the same, if anything it would show the chaos of combat decisions, and how different outcomes could have changed the geopolitics so much.

GS! Well done! In 1986 I was on the USS Coral Sea flying the F/A-18 Hornet. From January to April 1986, we were flying freedom of navigation ops, defying Omar Qaddafi’s “line of death” across the Gulf of Sidra. In the course of those five months, the USS Coral Sea conducted over 130 actual intercepts of Libyan Mig fighters to include the Mig- 23, Mirage F-1, and even some Mig-25s. I personally had four actual intercepts of mostly Mig-23s. The Migs would fly out, we would intercept them outside of 200 miles from the ship, join on their wing, take photos of their weapons load out , they would turn around and go home. Sometimes we’d actually wave adios to each other as we departed! The CAG later said we couldn’t do that any more…We were getting too friendly. Years later in 1989 when I read about the USS America’s F-14 Gulf of Sidra incident, I was absolutely incredulous. On the Coral Sea in 1986, even after five months and over 130 intercepts of Libyan fighters not once were we ever given a reason to shoot anybody down. Personally, I had never heard of any ROE based on bogey jinking. On the Coral Sea, AB decided if we could shoot or not. But he never had to make that decision because the Libyans always turned back before they got inside 200 nm. I’m still shaking my head at what happened with those Gypsies. I wonder if they all got awarded Silver Stars?
@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder Жыл бұрын
this is actually a super interesting read. I think that whole incident could probably have been avoided if there was cooler heads involved. I had no idea that many intercepts had occurred without incident, that fact alone really changes the way one looks at this incident. Thank you very much for sharing that really opened my eyes.

Nice! Have you tried recreating the fictional Red Dawn Colonel Tanner engagement? 1 V 5, his F-15 against 5 enemy MiGs. He never says what type so I would imagine they were whatever were the soviet front line fighters of the early 80's. And you would have to load the AIM-7's and AIM-9's that were available in the early 80's. Just a thought for a fun little mission.

Today in Airplane Geographic we can aprecciate rare footage of an enderaged species called F-14, this species is a type of bird is very agressive, likes to sweep its wings to scare predators, normally they live in community´s and have a queen (carrier) to defend. Today we saw one of this potent birds attempting to defend or just a random encounter with another agressive species that has similar characteristics. The MIG-23, this one also can sweep its wing in a defense measurement, today 4 of this decided to attack a lonely F-14 on the middle of the Mediterranian. The F-14 with its superior combat experience and better evolution came on top. Very interesting species.

Imagine being a Navy crewman on board a cruiser, or destroyer, watching Tomcats get launched off the deck, coming back to make the most nerve wracking landing possible day in and day out... with all of the attention spent on how cool the planes are, and how awesome it must have been to pilot one back in the day, you almost forget sometimes that there are people back on those ships putting their lives in the hands of capable and competent pilots every day. Imagine going out there with the weight of that on the back of your mind. You launch off the deck leaving all of your friends behind taking for granted that it's just another sortie, and you'll come back in just a little while. Thousands of soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines from lowly privates to top brass... from people that handle food to munitions... You are their shield. You are their sword.

When you fired the aim 54 with the acm switch on you mentioned locking the second mig. So I understand that they're active off the rail but I guess they have an idea which mig to try to go after or am I mistaken
@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder Жыл бұрын
no ur correct they come off the rail and the radar in the missile is already guiding at the correct mig, assuming it doesn't lose track, it will hit that specific mig. If it loses track it might look for another one and hit an alternate target which is why one should never shoot a fox3 into a furball because it might lose its target and lock onto a friendly instead.

Whilst I could keep track of migs 1 & 2 I have no idea how you kept tabs on 3 & 4, especially that last missile from dash 4. Love these vids and the new camera angles really help to show off the amazing heatblur model. Thanks Quick question though. Did they carry Phoenix at that point? I thought the F14s were sporting 2-2-0 although I can imagine that would be almost impossible to complete without a wingman.
