Something that very rarely gets talked about is that the F-14 was designed from the start as a strike fighter. It was just never equipped in that way when she went to the fleet. But, later in her life, the LANTIRN pod made the F-14 the Navy’s primary precision strike aircraft. It was even better in that role than the USAF’s F-15E Strike Eagle.
@EnterpriseXI Жыл бұрын
Can you explain why the F-14 was a better strike aircraft then the F-15E?

The F-14 could carry more ordnance and hit a target with more precision because the display they were able to use had a much higher resolution than both the Hornet and Eagle. Bomb equipped Tomcats were called the Bombcat. Luckily I got to see these planes and many others that no longer serve back in the 90's. When deployed on USS Carl Vinson CVN-70, the fleet still had F-14 Tomcat, A-6 Intruder, EA-6B Prowler, S-3 Viking, C-2 Greyhound and the F-18 Hornet. All those planes have been replaced. Aside from the E-2 Hawkeye and HH-60 Seahawk, the fleet is mostly F-18 Super Hornets with some F-35 Lightning II and CV-22 tilt rotor has replaced the C-2 IIRC. Did the USN ever make a proper replacement for the S-3 Viking? I think there was some talk of reactivating some of those airframes but I'm not sure if anything came from that. As for the F-14 being retired, it just came down to money. It was an expensive bird to maintain. Many manhours of maintenance for each flight hour IIRC.

As it turns out, F-14’s biggest enemy is itself. One fifth of the entire fleet was lost due to mechanical difficulties, mostly result of the variable geometry wing.
@smittywjmj Жыл бұрын
Don't forget about the engine troubles. TF30s were only meant to be temporary and recoup some of the development costs of the TFX F-111B program, but then the F100 program intended to replace the TF30s also got too expensive for the Navy and they pulled out of that. The F101DFE installations (the most powerful engines ever installed on a Tomcat) had spectacular performance but some issues with mounting and definitely too high of a cost for the Navy to upgrade the fleet. When F110s were eventually fitted to the Tomcat in the late '80s they could only afford a few dozen upgrades, and while these engines were easier to maintain and less prone to compressor stalls, they had a nasty habit of overrevving and exploding on the deck due to quality control issues. Every design and budget decision is always a compromise, but the Tomcat was constantly fighting against itself and the unwillingness/inability (depending who you ask) of big Navy to foot the bill to properly update the Tomcat in any significant number.
@sledgehammerk35 Жыл бұрын
That’s a myth. The Tomcast podcast debunked it several years ago… their was almost never a problem with the variable sweep wings. Mtc issues were a result of old airframes and a lack of funds allocated to the Tomcat program.

You'r comparing a very old twin engine heavy fighter w/ old analogue technology to the new single seat light fighter w/ new advance digital technology which have self maintenance feature on it. What i'm saying is, the variable geometry pivot of F14 was damage free and not a "nightmare" to maintain. F14's issue with maintenance & accident wasn't because of its VG's. This's common mistakes that media think f14's VG = super advance = broke easily & difficult to maintain, which's not true, especially for Grumman's product. I don't know how 'bout tornado or soviet jet; but VG definitely not a problem for f14.

Should have done the "super-tomcat"! Why? Because the Hornet (well: Super Hornet now) maybe less maintenance intensive, but it also gives up a lot of performance for that! The sweep-wings may require maintenance, but if you are in the air fighting? You would want them (Especially if you are a carrier-airwing fighting against land based aircraft, where quality/every available edge you can bring is a need as your carriers can't carry thousands of fighters)...hell, give the super-tomcat thrust-vectoring and you have a fighter without equal (and it can probably do ground attack well, too!) that can fly rings around the F18 (and maybe even the F22 - because that thing also does not have sweep-wings!)

Can you make the video regarding the F-15 Eagle after this? I was quite fascinated for the content of this channel alongside The Operations Room 😁😅

Nice video. Yu didn't mention the Achille Lauro hijacking. F-14s intercepted an Egypt Air 737 carrying two hijackers who murdered Leon Klinghoffer, a wheelchair bound American, and, working with an E-2 Hawkeye, forced them to land in Italy, where they were arrested. This daring law enforcement operation brought great credit to the Navy. Iranian F-14s are credited with downing at least one MiG-25 Foxbat.

The hard points under the nacelles were for fuel tanks only. The wing gloves had 4 hard points, not 2.
@smittywjmj Жыл бұрын
Wing gloves only have two hardpoints. Stations 1A and 8A are fitted to the 1/8 multipurpose pylons, and not to the wing glove itself.

Also if we're being picky, the AMRAAM was never carried and all Tomcat variants carried a2g munitions eventually :P
@smittywjmj Жыл бұрын
@@TLTeo AMRAAMs were carried in testing, unfortunately by the time they entered service the Tomcat budget had all but dried up so they were never operational on the F-14.

The Phoenis-Missile (especially if it were modernized!) alone would IMHO make it worth it to make new Tomcats (basically upgrade the design to modern standards - especially so that the new parts would NOT work for Iran, if they got their hands on them!)...it's after all the only aircraft to operate that missile and with the full AA-Combat-Loadout it would still be a very dangerous aircraft to enemies, especially if they build wanna-be-stealth-aircraft (like the Russians with their SU-57 and the Chinese with their Chengdu J-20 - both of which aren't all that stealthy! They've both been spotted easily by modern radar, their crossection is larger than that of on F-22 or F-35, so the Phoenix would work on them!). The Super-Tomcat wouldn't even have to go into knife-fighting range, so it wouldn't matter that this isn't a stealth aircraft (not to mention that stealth coatings are vulnerable to RAIN...seriously, you have super advanced aircraft custing hundreds of millions of dollars and you can't use them because it rains? Damned, go home!)...hell, add some wire mesh in front of their air-intakes and you can operate them from dirt-strips (because that's one of the vulnerabilities for western aircraft: They need clean airbases because their engines aren't protected from gobbling up dirt and stuff! Hell, they like "eating" seagulls etc.)

The person that killed the F-14 was Dick Cheney yes that guy when he was at the time Secretary of State and got the plane eventually killed off. Still they had to replace the plane with something just as reliable and the Navy went with an upgraded Super Hornet. The F-14 was a good interceptor. Had a radar that had a very long range. It was the ONLY plane that could carry the long range air to air Phoenix missile.

Imagine being an Iraqi pilot and having to choose three very bad options. Engage with F14s in the southeast, engage with F15s in the southwest, or run away... If you run, they will both hunt you down... And if you engage... we all know how that turns out.
