F-14 was tested extensively at 9G and it was considered "within limit load:".

Can you imagine if it had the F401 engines from the beginning?
@pogo11402 жыл бұрын
Or at least the F-100 engine that was slated for the F-15 and F-16. Remember that the F-16's GE engine was also used in the F-14A+/B/D, so it was not a physical limitation, just a Pratt and Whitney limitation

@@pogo1140 I know but it took until 1988 for them to use the F110 when they could have had F401in the late 70’s

@@pogo1140 The F-15 and F-16 were suffering the same problem as the F-14 in the 70s with those P&W engines compressor stall issues. The F-401 P&W engine was being developed specifically for the F-14 since it needed 28000 lbs thrust class engines and since F-15 and F-16 were lighter, they had the F-100 engines giving them 1:1 thrust to weight, which were 22,000 lbsf thrust class engines so not much of an improvement over the TF-030 engines, which were 20,000 lbsf thrust class engines. The F-401 gave the F-14B a 1:1 thrust to weight, but it was cancelled due to funding and engine R&D still not being finished until 1986 when the F-110 GE engines were introduced in the F-14B with 28,000 lbsf of thrust.

One of the great tragedies of US military aviation, along with the F-20 tigershark.

Notice that back during the early deployment the F-14 did carry external fuel tanks?
@ironroad182 жыл бұрын
No, the external tanks did not show up until the late 70s early 80s.

Most of this footage is from the early-mid 1970's. Back when the squadrons painted all of their jets in high-vis markings
