When they developed the ACLS system for the Navy, it was so accurate that, during carrier trials, the system could make the jet hit the same spot on the flight deck every single time causing slight warpage of the flight deck. They had to introduce an error signal into the system to vary where the plane touched down. Yep...not bad for '70's tech.

90s tech. ACLS was not available in the A model. Still very impressive though, considering other computers of the time were slower than sin and had storage capacities of a modern low tier smartphone.

Now all we need is the updated carrier with realistic comms and deck workers (at LEAST yellow shirts...but hopefully it’s possible to get all the crews from the refueling purple shirts to the ordinance specialists that arm the aircraft). Paranoid about not putting in the correct course for the runway. The briefings only supposedly list the BR course...but even they are wrong in the tutorials by about 8 degrees.

Though functional, the f14’s acls system is still highly inaccurate & unreliable, that’s my conclusion after 6 times of trying, presumably in reality, the f14’s acls system didn’t saw too much utility because of it’s immaturity, could say the true acls system is not available until f18c was put in services

What I don't get is stuff like this has been around since the 1970s yet pilots even today are trained no to trust it at all. Weird considering how hard engineers work to make it safe.
@KomradeDoge
@KomradeDoge 3 жыл бұрын
Oh pilots are absolutely trained to trust thier gear and thier ground crew. Its still sketchy just because things like this are not commonly done so thier much more out of date with thier training. A Navy pilot typically lands on the carrier once or twice a day. They do NOT typically land at night, and especially not under emergency conditions.

Hello, I know this is an old video so I’m not expecting a response, but I couldn’t find an answer anywhere online. Anytime I use the ACLS I bolter. I’ve tried probably 10-15 times, the setup is the same as yours and I get the plane to automatically fly down to the deck, but it’s a bolter every time. Is this a known issue? Is there something I’m missing? I’d appreciate any help anyone might have thanks!

Thanks for the vid...have yet to try this in the tomcat at least... One thing I will def add as a tip for others: When intercepting the tacan final course radial, it's best to do so at a 45 degree angle rather than the pretty much 90 degree angle used in this video. That way it's a much smoother evolution of intercepting and turning into the selected course. Having said that, I'm sure Cap knew this...Pretty tough doing this landing and talking at the same time lol.

@@crash8926 Whether it's realistic or not depends on what era your mission takes place in. Tomcat pilots were cleared to use Nightvision in '95, meaning they could have had it for just over 10 years, and well into the war in Iraq for CAS Ops
