Fun fact although I can't verify it's authenticity:. When they first implemented the ACLS it was extremely accurate. So accurate that it landed the aircraft in almost the same location everytime it landed. While this was great for getting aircraft back on the boat, it had the unintended consequence of having the tail hook strike the same spot on the flight deck causing unreasonable wear and tear on the exact same spot. To keep the flight deck from getting a hole in it from all the landings they programmed a small margin of error into the ACLS. This allowed it to catch the wire from within the landing area, but not the same spot everytime. I was an avionics technician on F-18s and some of the older guys in the squadron told me that story.

It's probably not true tbh although its an interesting story. From an engineering perspective it's cheaper and safer to just reinforce that space that is honestly less than half a square foot than to purposely program a margin of error that could cause all kinds of problems in atypical, or unpredictable situations. Keep in mind that this system did have limitations in overtly windy conditions. Programming that margin of error would have just made it less effective in those conditions and lowered the ceiling for when it could have been used.

In case you are watching this video in 2023 and can't get the A/P CPLR light to come on alongside the ACL READY light, and thus can't engage ACLS: you HAVE to engage DLC! ACLS will only work with DLC enabled!

@@gabrielBrun-ef2bz You have to bind a key to DLC toggle / Countermeasure Dispense. Once you have deployed flaps, that key will activate DLC, which should allow ACLS to function correctly.

Very nice! Side note, the reason you had a bad time on the localizer was because you were homing it, not tracking. Cross check with your HSI on to confirm you inbound course, then fly that heading and compensate for any crosswind. Also, Anti-Skid Spoiler BK should be turned off for CV operation. Fantastic job though explaining the procedure and sequence! Cheers!

Hello there, for me, the horizontal needle is very low and when I activate the Nose/wheel steering button, the plane goes down to meet the horizonal needle and crash into the sea.. I found on the EagleDinamics forum that there is a bug since may/20, is that true? they still not fixed? thanks!

I get lined up like this approx 5 miles out cmd control light comes on and the ap doesnt take over and i ditch into the sea :-/ Any ideas?

Isn't it also a thing that if you call the carrier on ATC and select Inbound, they'll turn on the landing lights for you? Pretty sure thats why I always get a NG from the LSO.

Hornet only has ATC Auto Throttle Control. Word has it that a full auto system may be given to it t some point.

Okay so asking for a "friend", could you use ACLS under case 1 conditions... For um, idle curiosity of course. Who would ever want to NOT do it manually am I right?

Actually, I have this same question. I am getting better at landing on case 1 conditions, but it would be fun / useful to be able to auto pilot onto the carrier “that” mission you did great, but you are failing on the landing front! :)

The system in mid 1960's started with an analog SPN-10, Then moved to digital in 1970's SPN-42 with a computer that had 32k of memory. Then in mid 1980's SPN-46 till present. SPN-46 has gone through many upgrades.

Also, keep in mind, this is the same kind of precision datalink control logic that can enable the F-14 to remotely flown for ground-controlled interception and even bombing via datalink. The F-106 Delta Dart had similar capabilities as well.

Hello, I need help. I followed your instructions TO THE LETTER, I was on speed/AOA, I was centered, everything was perfect. I landed on the carrier, I got the 3 wire, but the plane didn't stop. I made sure the hook was down, I rewatched the video several times to see if I missed something, but I did everything right. Please help!

When i try to do it the acls won't engage when i press the button. The acls ready light lights up but it doesn't engage when i press the button.. The rest of the landing gose fine except for the fact i have to do the touch down manually. Can someone give me some help please?
