Growing up in New Zealand I remember seeing a DeHavilland Vampire in the sky above Epsom in Auckland in the mid 60's as a kid, and I remember seeing a McDonnell Douglas Skyhawk taking off from Ohakea in the mid 90's. Apart from that sightings of military jets in the Shaky Isles were few and far between! Thanks for posting.

Im in Auckland. I remember back in 2003 2004. Papakura suburb. Nearest airfield is Ardmore. I was outside and noticed a jet aircraft flying sideways and only noticed the underside of it greyish silver color. . Not sure what model. F-16 or F-14 Tomcat? lol. Whatever it was it never came too close to general population area as where I was living was borderline to rural land. I never forget that sight and it's manoeuvrability. Awesome 😳

Does not matter when you have a Fuel Tanker flying with you. And they would throttle back and probably fly sub sonic so the Tanker can keep up. Cheers

This brings up any interesting question - what is the speed at which F16’s get their best fuel economy? I am betting that it is below the sound barrier, but I look forward to being proved wrong on that. Also curious how many miles they get to the gallon. (Or is it gallons to the mile?)
@BatMan-xr8gg4 жыл бұрын
@@artistjoh Your comment made me think, so I did some research and found nothing about their fuel economy. Probably a secret. Cheers

@TopAirspace3 жыл бұрын
They would have cruised at around Mach 0.85 / Mach 0.90 at around 32,000ft or there abouts for maximum fuel efficiency, Infighting refueling would have been performed at likely around 22,000ft in denser air so the aircraft could maintain a slower speed with less AOA. Both F-16's had clean wings and just one centreline fuel tank. It is quite surprising actually that they didn't each have the two additional long range ferry tanks that the F-16's carry. It certainly would have meant less in-flight refuelling. And for the record the F-16 isn't capable of Supercruising, which means to fly Supersonic it requires the Afterburner. Therefore it can't fly Supersonic for extended periods of time because of how rapidly the Afterburner depletes fuel. All long range F-16 flights are Sub-sonic.

Matthew Joyce short memory? My memory doesn’t stretch back that far. Any how the only feasible threat to NZ might be Russia or China. Do you think they would be deterred by 4 or 5 F-16s? @@TheForge10 How does pointing out the fact that there's more to an airforce than just fighter jets, imply that I'm a 'leftie'? And no, having a 37 year career in the aviation industry, I can assure you that I'd be more than happy if the 'fighter' component returned to the airforce, despite your presumption to the contrary. Even though there is no fighter wing component to the airforce, there are still many roles that are being performed, transport/freight and maritime patrol and surveillance being a large contingent. Perhaps you haven't realised either, that a number of the aircraft deployed by the airforce are still capable of entering into war theatres, with onboard weapons systems allowing engagement with enemy forces. You need to focus on the BIGGER picture perhaps, instead of your current narrow view of what enables an airforce to function effectively in various situations.
