I was serving with the British Army in Northern Ireland in early 1974, at the height of the war/ 'troubles' . I was a combat signaller, and we heard a huge bang so I radioed it in to 'intel'. A couple of days later, a message came 'from above' that many, many, had reported this huge 'boom' right across Northern Ireland . It transpired that 'Concorde', which was still doing test trials, and had gone supersonic over Northern Ireland.

Supersonic flight is just over a year older than me. I grew up in the unofficial test path heading west 170 miles from Malmstrom AFB, Billings Montana, before there were any laws against rattling civilians' windows (or teeth). They'd take off and in less than 15 minutes we'd hear a crushing boom and by the time we looked up they'd already turned around and set to run over us again. Pretty cool if you don't mind scared dogs, runny eggs, sour milk and stampeding bison.

Poor guy messing with his camera, probably thinking that he’d hear it approach! 🤣 My 80 year old Dad still likes to tell anyone who’ll listen that he probably saved my hearing when I was a couple of years old. They were having a kind of mini (very unofficial) air show at an RAF base in the 60’s. My Mum tapped Dad on the shoulder while he was talking to someone and said “That plane’s not making any noise - is it ok?” Dad had barely enough time to leap towards my pushchair and clap his hands over my ears before the old English Electric Lightening made a bang and all the windows in the nearby hangers fell out. Apparently I jumped up and down in my pushchair shouting “Again”. I’d love to have the chance to hear it again.
@nicktecky55 Жыл бұрын
56 Squadron flying English Electric Lightnings were the display team back in the day. I saw them at the Biggin Hill BoB display when the solo dropped into the dip at the west end of the runway, having crossed the town at zero feet and accelerated to Mach1 while coming down the runway, you could see the compression wave clearly. When he got to the east end of the runway, the pilot stood it on its tail and went vertical until it disappeared on a perfectly clear day. We were still trying to find it when the rest of the team flew down the runway at zero feet from the opposite direction. That was LOUD, what an opener!

I saw something like this when I was in the Navy. Our ship was in an area where flight ops were in effect so we all went topside to see the jets. One was going to fly across our bow at an angle and I was watching it's approach when I thought "Why is this plane so silent, where is the engine noise?" Everyone else had their hands over their ears when it dawned on me why. Yeah, I was that naive.

Else I love raw outdoor nature and mountains and vast landscapes that make humility pour out of every sweat gland of my body and sometimes with adrenaline rush that tech cannot beat (like that comes with a wild bull elephant trumpeting just 6 metres behind me chasing me to squash me).😂😂😂

I'm lucky enough to hear the sonic booms quite frequently as I live on the Space Coast of E. Cent. FL. I'm about 20 miles south of Kennedy Space Center/Cape Canaveral. When the Shuttle program was in motion I'd hear the "Twin Sonic Booms" when they landed at KSC. Those shook the whole house and you hear the windows rattle. Same thing now when SpaceX and ULA launch their rockets, if they land at the space center you can hear them. Many times they land out at sea on a Drone ship and no sonic booms to hear. Amazing how they pinpoint those landings to their target. I never get tired of the launches and landings.

The Sonic Boom is far louder than you hear in the video. During the 1950's and 60's, the Air Force had several air bases in "Northern Michigan". They used to run training exercises over Lake Michigan, Huron and Superior. They flew hot (ballistic) all the time and you could the boom far off in the distance. The bases are closed and they don't go ballistic over civilians anymore. However, I lived in Dayton, OH, during the attacks on the Twin Trade Towers and other attacks during 911. About 3 days later, I was home working, when I heard what sounded like a vey loud explosion. I and other people ran out of their homes to try and learn what happened. Actually President Bush was flying over Dayton, on his way back to WDC, from Colorado, where he had been. The USAF has a base north of Dayton, Wright-Patterson AFB. The Air Force had scrambled fighters to escort Air Force One and those fighters had gone ballistic immediately; ergo the loud boom! So the sonic boom is very loud indeed, if you have not heard it before!

Sound is nothing compared to the speed of light. Light is litteraly teleporting. We may be able tontransport little atoms etc at that speed, but traveling will be another challenge
